Ils décortiquent les facteurs qui ont permis à Bush de s'imposer après les attentats et abordent le débat entre les partisans d'un exécutif fort et ceux d'une démocratie moins impériale et moins impérialiste.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Together, Paris-based artists Léonore Bonaccini and Xavier Fourt make up the artist duo Bureau d'Etudes. For the past several years, this French group has been producing cartographies of contemporary political, social and economic systems which allow people to empower and reposition themselves. Revealing what normally remains invisible, often in the shape of large-sized banners, and contextualizing apparently separate elements within another framework, these visualizations of people's interests and relations re-symbolize and actualize an order concealed and unknown.
Book Synopsis Divided Loyalties in a Doomed Empire by : Daniel Royot
Download or read book Divided Loyalties in a Doomed Empire written by Daniel Royot and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genealogy of the French-speaking members of the Lewis and Clark expedition can often be traced back to the times where the fleur-de-lys was flying over New France. The terra incognita was explored to gratify Louis XIV's lust for the brown gold of the fur trade. By the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition, the French were well integrated into the North American population. These men were instrumental in the success of the Corps of Discovery. Observers from the Montreal North West Company spied on the expedition for fear of American encroachments. New Spain sent in vain a French adventurer to capture Meriwether Lewis. The legend of the West has both French and American heroes in common among the coureurs de bois (white Indians) and mountain men.

Book Synopsis Ethics and Sport in Europe by : Dominique Bodin
Download or read book Ethics and Sport in Europe written by Dominique Bodin and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defending ethics in sport is vital in order to combat the problems of corruption, violence, drugs, extremism and other forms of discrimination it is currently facing. Sport reflects nothing more and nothing less than the societies in which it takes place. However, if sport is to continue to bring benefits for individuals and societies, it cannot afford to neglect its ethical values or ignore these scourges. The major role of the Council of Europe and the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) in addressing the new challenges to sports ethics was confirmed by the 11th Council of Europe Conference of Ministers responsible for Sport, held in Athens on 11 and 12 December 2008. A political impetus was given on 16 June 2010 by the Committee of Ministers, with the adoption of an updated version of the Code of Sports Ethics (Recommendation CM/Rec(2010)9), emphasising the requisite co-ordination between governments and sports organisations. The EPAS prepared the ministerial conference and stepped up its work in an international conference organised with the University of Rennes, which was attended by political leaders, athletes, researchers and officials from the voluntary sector. The key experiences described in the conference and the thoughts that it prompted are described in this publication. All the writers share the concern that the end result should be practical action - particularly in terms of the setting of standards - that falls within the remit of the EPAS and promotes the Council of Europe's core values.

Book Synopsis Philosophy in a Time of Terror by : Giovanna Borradori
Download or read book Philosophy in a Time of Terror written by Giovanna Borradori and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for Philosophy in a Time of Terror was born hours after the attacks on 9/11 and was realized just weeks later when Giovanna Borradori sat down with Jürgen Habermas and Jacques Derrida in New York City, in separate interviews, to evaluate the significance of the most destructive terrorist act ever perpetrated. This book marks an unprecedented encounter between two of the most influential thinkers of our age as here, for the first time, Habermas and Derrida overcome their mutual antagonism and agree to appear side by side. As the two philosophers disassemble and reassemble what we think we know about terrorism, they break from the familiar social and political rhetoric increasingly polarized between good and evil. In this process, we watch two of the greatest intellects of the century at work.
Book Synopsis The Contradictions of American Capital Punishment by : Franklin E. Zimring
Download or read book The Contradictions of American Capital Punishment written by Franklin E. Zimring and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-18 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the United States continue to employ the death penalty when fifty other developed democracies have abolished it? Why does capital punishment become more problematic each year? How can the death penalty conflict be resolved? In The Contradictions of American Capital Punishment, Frank Zimring reveals that the seemingly insoluble turmoil surrounding the death penalty reflects a deep and long-standing division in American values, a division that he predicts will soon bring about the end of capital punishment in our country. On the one hand, execution would seem to violate our nation's highest legal principles of fairness and due process. It sets us increasingly apart from our allies and indeed is regarded by European nations as a barbaric and particularly egregious form of American exceptionalism. On the other hand, the death penalty represents a deeply held American belief in violent social justice that sees the hangman as an agent of local control and safeguard of community values. Zimring uncovers the most troubling symptom of this attraction to vigilante justice in the lynch mob. He shows that the great majority of executions in recent decades have occurred in precisely those Southern states where lynchings were most common a hundred years ago. It is this legacy, Zimring suggests, that constitutes both the distinctive appeal of the death penalty in the United States and one of the most compelling reasons for abolishing it. Impeccably researched and engagingly written, Contradictions in American Capital Punishment casts a clear new light on America's long and troubled embrace of the death penalty.
