Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: With cooperation of Aline Robert, Janine Rogalski, Maha Abboud-Blanchard, Claire Cazes, Monique Chappet-Pariès, Aurélie Chesnais, Christophe Hache, Julie Horoks, Eric Roditi & Nathalie Sayac. This book presents unique insights into a significant area of French research relating the learning and teaching of mathematics in school classrooms and their development. Having previously had only glimpses of this work, I have found the book fascinating in its breadth of theory, its links between epistemological, didactic and cognitive perspectives and its comprehensive treatment of student learning of mathematics, classroom activity, the work of teachers and prospective teacher development. Taking theoretical perspectives as their starting points, the authors of this volume present a rich array of theoretically embedded studies of mathematics teaching and learning in school classrooms. Throughout this book the reader is made aware of many unanswered questions and challenged to consider associated theoretical and methodological issues. For English-speaking communities who have lacked opportunity to access the French literature the book opens up a wealth of new ways of thinking about and addressing unresolved issues in mathematics learning, teaching and teacher education. I recommend it wholeheartedly! (Extract from Barbara Jaworski’s preface.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of papers in this anthology represents what may be a broad exploration of the role of philosophical inquiry in the classroom and in mathematics teacher education, a topos characterized by multiple, intersecting themes, all of which converge on a central question: what is the role of mathematics in the construction of the realities we live by, and could that role be different if we became aware of its invisible power? In the age of the Anthropocene - an era in which technological intervention plays an ever more central role in the way we build, develop and attempt to maintain our increasingly fragile and risk-prone human and natural world, what are the implications of the hegemonic epistemic status of mathematics in those processes? Does mathematics define the conditions of possibility of all knowledge, whether expressed in a theory or silently invested in a practice? Does or can mathematics and its presumed value-neutrality serve to limit, constrain, suppress, and even preclude other, perhaps more valuable forms of knowledge? Alternatively, can philosophical dialogue about mathematics serve to clarify, unmask, reframe and recreate our understanding of mathematics and its symbolic power in the human and material world, and act as an emancipatory form of knowledge in culture and society? What would such dialogues look like in the mathematics classroom? The papers in this volume address these questions in various contexts and registers, and provide prospective and in-service teachers with compelling and suggestive ways of responding to them. A must-read for math educators everywhere. Nadia Stoyanova Kennedy, Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, City University of New York, USA. Eva Marsal, Professor of Philosophy, University of Education, Karlsruhe, Germany & University of Warsaw, Poland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of scholarly studies in the history of mathematics education, very abbreviated versions of which were presented at the ICMI Congress in 2021. The book discusses issues in education in Brazil and Belgium, in Poland and Spain, in Russia and the United States. Probably the main factor that unifies the chapters of the book is their attention to key moments in the formation of the field of mathematics education. Topics discussed in the book include the formation and development of mathematics education for women; the role of the research mathematician in the formation of standards for writing textbooks; the formation of curricula and the most active figures in this formation during the New Math period; the formation of certain distinctive features of curricula in Poland; the formation of the views of David Eugene Smith and the influence of European mathematics education on him; the formation of the American mathematics community; and the creation of such forms of student assessment as entrance exams to higher educational institutions. The book is of interest not only to historians of mathematics education, but also to wide segments of specialists in other areas of mathematics education.

Book excerpt: This open access book’s theme is Teaching mathematics as to be meaningful – foregrounding children’s play and perspectives. It discusses the relation between teachers, children and mathematical content within the context of play with a particular focus on the framing of these relations within this context, which is an important theme in the debate on whether teaching should be integrated with or separated from children’s play. The work further addresses meaningfulness in the learning process, particularly from the child’s perspective. Globally, most guidelines and curricula for early childhood education mention play as one of the key features for young children’s learning. Still, there are quite different views on the definitions of play and in what ways play should become part of children’s learning. The chapters of the book mirror the research topics presented at the fifth POEM conference in May 2022 divided into four sub-themes: Play and learning, Children’s perspectives on mathematics, Teachers’ competencies and Theorizing aspects of early mathematics education.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together recent research and commentary in secondary school mathematics from a breadth of contemporary Canadian and International researchers and educators. It is both representative of mathematics education generally, as well as unique to the particular geography and culture of Canada. The chapters address topics of broad applicability such as technology in learning mathematics, recent interest in social justice contexts in the learning of mathematics, as well as Indigenous education. The voices of classroom practitioners, the group ultimately responsible for implementing this new vision of mathematics teaching and learning, are not forgotten. Each section includes a chapter written by a classroom teacher, making this volume unique in its approach. We have much to learn from one another, and this volume takes the stance that the development of a united vision, supported by both research and professional dialog, provides the first step.
