Il fallut à ces passionnés, souvent étrangers au monde cheminot, acquérir tout ce que le monde moderne s'empressait d'oublier et le transmettre aux plus jeunes : les méthodes d'entretien et de réparation d'une technologie centenaire, la recherche de fournisseurs de plus en plus rares, les savoir-faire propres à la chauffe et à la conduite des locomotives à vapeur... Mais il ne suffisait pas de manier la clé à molette ou la pelle de chauffe, car pour vaincre le scepticisme des pouvoirs publics il fallut constituer des dossiers, rédiger des procédures, dresser des bilans et lancer des démarches commerciales, c'est à dire prouver que l'enthousiasme et la rigueur ne sont pas incompatibles... Grâce à la compréhension de quelques officiels et à l'acharnement de nombreux bénévoles, une vingtaine de locomotives à vapeur peuvent être considérées comme actives sur le réseau français et son voisin suisse en ce début du XXIe siècle, dont une douzaine simultanément en état de marche. Les 140 C et 141 R, actrices de la fin de la vapeur en service régulier, ont été les premières à reprendre le rail, suivies par des 141 C, 141 TB et TD. L'étape suivante fut celle du retour des locomotives de vitesse, machines de légende mais d'une conduite et d'un entretien délicats. Ce furent d'abord les "Pacific", 231 G en 1986 et 231 K en 1991, puis les "Mountain", 241 A en 1997 et 241 P en 2006. Cet album, illustré par les meilleurs photographes ferroviaires contemporains, montre donc en action toutes les locomotives à vapeur d'origine SNCF qui ont circulé sur le réseau national ou à l'étranger durant la période 2000-2011, celles qui reprendront bientôt les rails, ainsi que les rares incursions de machines étrangères en France. Une évocation en hommage à toutes celles et tous ceux qui oeuvrent inlassablement pour perpétuer le grand spectacle de la vapeur !
