Book excerpt: Purpose of the present investigation was to assess the feasibility of simulating and studying coherent structures in turbulent shear layers, making use of Large Eddy Simulations (LES). The current investigation has been performed across a rather wide range of simulated flows and LES implementations, starting from an established and validated structured LES code based on finite differences and cartesian grids ending to an unstructured LES code under development. The use of the unstructured approach was considered necessary whenever complex geometries have to be analyzed, which cannot be handled by the structured code, regardless its advanced features (like multi-domain approach). The unstructured LES code was developed in the frame of current GRANT, and it has undergone validation. The structured LES code, which had already validated over a wide range of flow configurations, was used to analyze the wake behind an obstacle, attempt which was not made before. Extensive studies were needed in the attempt to validate to code for this case. Given the wide scope of present report and the mass of data available from different LES codes, flows and structures, the work has been spit between two work groups, the one devoted to the structured LES and the one devoted to the unstructured LES. In this flame it was found more practical to sub-divide the full report in three volumes: Volume I-- Investigation of Coherent Structures in an Attached Shear Layer; Volume II --Wake around square Cylinder; Volume III -- Unstructured LES.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the present investigation is to assess the feasibility of simulating and studying coherent structures in turbulent shear layers, making use of Large Eddy Simulations (LES). Volumes I and II were devoted to the investigation of coherent structures in LES solutions obtained using a structured-grid finite-difference code, first in an attached turbulent flow, and then in the wake behind a square cylinder. The structured grid code used in Parts I & II, despite its multi-domain capability, is limited in the domain geometries it can handle. The third part of the work was therefore devoted to the development of an unstructured grid LES code able to compute turbulent flows over arbitrary two-dimensional geometries. A combined finite-element/Fourier spectral space discretization scheme was selected, as it combines optimally the geometrical flexibility provided by the finite element scheme and the computational efficiency resulting from the decomposition in Fourier modes in the outof-plane direction. Indeed, thanks to this decomposition, and a suitable treatment of the nonlinear convective terms, the 3D flow problem is transformed into a series of 2D problems in Fourier space, completely decoupled within each time step. In addition, the decoupling allows for an easy parallelization by partitioning the work in Fourier space rather than physical space. Also, the stabilized finite element technique selected for the in-plane discretization provides an accuracy superior to its finite volume counterpart on the same unstructured grid and for the same discretization stencil.

Book excerpt: This program combines both experimental flow visualization studies with analytical investigations of a series of phenomenological and theoretical models based upon three-dimensional, vortical flow structures developing and interacting in proximity to a solid surface. The experimental program considered a range of sub-problems including the effect of surface modifications on low-speed streak formation and drag, and the effect of vortex loop inter-action with a solid boundary. To augment visual studies, a computerized interface with the video system has been developed which allows quantitative data to be obtained from flow visualization pictures. The specific thrust of the theoretical studies has been focussed on three areas: (1) how two and three-dimensional vortex structures interact with wall boundary layers; (2) the development of a new type of prediction method for two-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer flows; and (3) improvement in numerical techniques for solving parabolic, boundary-layer equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expert review of recent progress in the study of turbulent flows with a focus on recently identified organized structures. This book reviews the recent progress in the study of the turbulent flows that sculpt the Earth’s surface, focusing in particular on the organized structures that have been identified in recent years within turbulent flows. These coherent flow structures can include eddies or vortices at the scale of individual grains, through structures that scale with the flow depth in rivers or estuaries, to the large-scale structure of flows at the morphological or landform scale. These flow structures are of wide interest to the scientific community because they play an important role in fluid dynamics and influence the transport, erosion and deposition of sediment and pollutants in a wide variety of fluid flow environments. Scientific knowledge of these structures has improved greatly over the past 20 years as computational fluid dynamics has come to play an increasing important part in building our understanding of coherent flow structures across a broad range of scales. Chapters comprise a series of major, invited papers and a selection of the most novel, innovative papers presented at the second Coherent Flow Structures Conference held August 3-5, 2011 at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia. Chapters focus on six major themes: Dynamics of coherent flow structures (CFS) in geophysical flows Interaction of turbulent flows, vegetation and ecological habitats Coherent structure of atmospheric flows Numerical modeling of coherent flow structures Turbulence in open channel flows Coherent flow structures, sediment transport and morphological feedbacks.

Using simultaneous flow visualization and hot-wire anemometry, all motions have been detected and simultaneously quantified. Two coherent motions, one in the outer region and one in the wall region are important in the Reynolds number range R0 less than 4000. The important outer region eddy is a vortex ring like microscale eddy. (Author).

Book excerpt: In this study, a high-resolution and high-accuracy 2D pseudo-spectral numerical model (Diamessis et al. 2005) [23] is applied to investigate the boundary layer flows under a surface solitary wave. The numerical results are compared with the analytical solution derived by Liu & Orfilla (2004)[24], and the experimental data obtained from a series of U-tube experiments provided by Sumer et al. (2010)[21]. Define the Reynolds number as Re = aU0m /[nu], where U0m is the maximum free-stream velocity, 2a the corresponding fluid particle displacement, and [nu] the fluid viscosity, Sumer et al. (2010)[21] tested the boundary layer flow under the soliton-like pressure gradient for Re ranging from 2.8 x 104 to 2.0 x 106 . They reported that as the Reynolds number increases, the boundary flow experiences from laminar regime to the transitional flow regime where a regular array of 2D vortex tubes was generated in the boundary layer; and then to the turbulent flow regime where the 3D turbulent spots appear. In this study, we design three cases following the Sumer et al. (2010)'s[21] experimental setup in the transitional flow regime (Re ranging from 2.0 x 105 to 6.0 x 105) to examine the characteriscs and the evolution of the vortex coherent structures in the wave boundary layer. An universal graph of the evolution of the normalized bed shear stress without generalization of the vortex tubes within different Reynolds number is shown as a preliminary discuss of the near-bed flow behaviour. The vortex coherent structures are then triggered by inserting numerical noises, we conclude that during the deceleration stage, flow reversal occurs near the boundary layer, the Kevin-Helmholz (K-H) instability is found to be the main mechanism responsible for the generation of the 2D vortex tubes. The evolution of the shear layer instability is examined and discussed. The evolution of the shear layer instability is also provided in this study by examing the development of the vortex structures and the spatio-temporal description of the bottom shear stress. The changes of the vorticity field are quantified by vortex tube characteristics, such as the magnitude, size and trajectory. To investigate the effect of tsunami-typed surface wave on the coherent structure in boundary layer, a further study applying the non-symmetric surface solitary wave is also provided.

Book excerpt: This is an interim annual report for an ongoing research program studying coherent structure in turbulent boundary layers. The design and development of a water channel facility for use in flow visualization studies of coherent turbulent boundary structure is described. The particularly unique aspects of this facility include the incorporation of (1) a moving reference (viewing) platform for study of relative motion effects and (2) a closed circuit television monitoring and recording system. Preliminary flow visualization results are presented for both a fixed and moving reference frame, and a tentative vortex-loop model of coherent turbulent boundary layer structure is proposed. Computer simulations of a transverse structure in a turbulent boundary layer are presented showing a remarkable similarity with experimental flow visualization results. Research directions for the following year are outlined. (Author).
