Dans l'optique de trouver une alternative à l'assainissement autonome (assainissement non collectif), des technologies biologiques rustiques par cultures fixées sur supports fins, destinées aux petites et moyennes collectivités ont été expérimentées. Le premier volet du travail expérimental à consister à évaluer les performances comparées du sable et des fibres de coco en traitement d'eaux résiduaires urbaines après un processus anaérobie par lagunage. Dans une deuxième étape, ont été évaluées les performances épuratoires de filtres plantés de Andropogon gayanus Kunth et Chrysopogon nigritana (Benth) Veldkamp deux poaceae des zones tropicales. Les abattements moyens d'élimination de la pollution biodégradable sont respectivement de 99% et 98% à la sortie du filtre à sable et de celui de substrat de coco. Cependant, il y a une DCO ajoutée due à l'extraction de composés phénoliques du substrat de coco qui occulte les performances réelles de ce support de culture. Toutefois, en l'absence d'une bonne nitrification au sein du massif de substrat de coco, contrairement au sable, nous avons relevé une élimination de l'azote sous forme d'ammonium avec un rendement de 75%. Par ailleurs, ce matériau végétal par sa structure très poreuse a montré une plus grande capacité à éliminer les sels minéraux comparativement au sable. Quant aux filtres plantés de Andropogon gayanus et Chrysopogon nigritana, si les deux pilotes ont assuré des abattements de plus de 97% de la DBO5, le premier a assuré un prélèvement plus important des nutriments (N et P).

Book excerpt: La présente étude consiste à analyser et à évaluer les performances du Jatropha Curcas L., à épurer les eaux usées domestiques en fonction des charges polluantes. Le pilote expérimental est constitué de 4 séries de bacs disposées en cascade. Chaque tète de série est munie d'un bac d'alimentation pouvant alimenter le système avec une capacité de 200 L/jour. Ces bacs renferment deux types d'effluents: une eau usée moyennement chargée et une autre faiblement chargée. Pour chaque type, il existe une série de bacs plantés (9 plants/bacs) et non plantés pris comme témoins, contenant 20 L d'eau par bac et remplis sur une épaisseur de 17 cm de quartz ayant une granulométrie comprise entre 10 à 25 mm et une porosité de 0,77 %. Les plantes de pourghère utilisées ont des feuilles qui ont atteint un stade de développement mature. Ces plantes croissent et se développent normalement dans ce substrat qu'est le quartz. Tous les débits d'alimentation sont fixés à 0,01 l/s ce qui correspond à un fonctionnement du système pendant 24 heures. Ce qui permet de traiter un volume de 177 L/Jour/bac. Le temps de séjours théorique est évalué à 34 mn.

Les enjeux aujourd'hui sont de mieux maitriser les performances de ces systèmes et d'optimiser le traitement de l'azote et du phosphore. Les travaux présentés ici portent sur un procédé appelé AZOE® dont les deux principales modifications par rapport au système de base sont l'immersion partielle des filtres plantés de roseaux et l'ajout d'un lit bactérien en tête de filière. Les objectifs de ces travaux sont d'approfondir la compréhension des mécanismes de traitement de l'azote sur cette filière, en particulier le lien entre carbone et azote, ainsi que de tester de possibles optimisations. Une attention particulière a été porté aux le développement de méthodologie analytique adaptée aux particularités de ces systèmes. Les résultats obtenus ont permis de mettre en évidence que dans ces procédés, la charge carbonée est dégradée jusqu'à 50% sur le lit bactérien, tandis que la nitrification peut atteindre 25% dans certains cas. Le premier étage de filtre planté contribue à la nitrification à hauteur de 75% et à la dénitrification à hauteur de 60%. L'ensemble des travaux ont permis de confirmer que le manque de carbone organique sur le second étage était le principal facteur limitant de la dénitrification et de mieux quantifier l'évolution du ratio carbone : azote tout au long de la filière de traitement. Un des apports de cette thèse a consisté à adapter et/ou développer des approches analytiques spécifiques pour améliorer la compréhension des procédés. Tout d'abord une approche isotopique a été développée en complément d'un traçage hydraulique pour appréhender la dynamique du comportement de l'azote au cours d'une période d'alimentation du système. Un traçage à l'ammonium marqué a permis de mettre en évidence la réactivité de l'azote avec les médias filtrant et de suivre dans le temps le déplacement et les transformations d'une bâchée. Les pilotes expérimentaux ont été équipés d'une installation spécifique permettant le prélèvement de matériaux filtrants sur lesquels les activités enzymatiques de nitrification et de dénitrification de chaque étage ont été mesurés avec une précision d'environ 5 cm au sein des horizons des milieux poreux. Dans une dernière phase destinée à optimiser ces systèmes au regard des limites identifiées, deux stratégies d'apport de carbone organique ont été évaluées pour lever les carences en carbone limitant la dénitrification sur le second étage. La dérivation d'une proportion d'effluent brut vers le second étage a été testée à l'échelle pilote, couplée à la mesure des potentiels microbiens de nitrification et de dénitrification permettant une cartographie fine des horizons impliquées dans le traitement de l'azote en comparaison d'un fonctionnement sans dérivation. Enfin, des essais de laboratoire ont porté sur le choix et l'étude de 7 matériaux biosourcés comme apport de carbone.
