Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtuoso guitarist Fernando Sor (1778-1839) was also one of the instrument's preeminent composers. In addition he composed many works for other instruments in the forms of symphonies, ballet music, string quartets, and sacred vocal music among others. Although these works were often more popular at the time of their creation it is only his guitar works that are performed or recorded with any regularity today. Sor's life and career can essentially be divided into five periods associated with his residences in Spain (1778-1813), Paris (1813-1815), London (1815-1823), Russia (through Paris, Berlin, and Warsaw, (1823-1826/7), and back to Paris (1826/7-1839) where he died. The present set of pieces originally written for piano solo dates almost entirely from his time in London. The musical forms taken are those of popular dances of the day. Included here are two sets of waltzes, three sets of quadrilles, and a lone mazurka published in Paris in 1835. In addition Sor's solo piano works included minuets, an arrangement of his Funeral March for Tsar Alexander (originally for military band), and arrangements of the overture, a largo, and a minuet from his own opera Telemaco. Only the works from Telemaco are known to have survived with the exception of one minuet that is a version of the final minuet in his Op.3 for guitar. They are not included here.

Book excerpt: LES REFLETS DE L'OBSCURITÉ is an original collection of four pieces for solo guitar, ranging from intermediate to advanced skill and of a total duration of approximately fifteen minutes. Secrets d'une ombre, Ecume orange, Parfums d'éclipse and Sables stellaires tell the story of a journey in a suspended and colorful universe, projecting the listener into a soundscape of many horizons. The combination of traditional music writing and an impressionistic language allows the musician expressive freedom, while guiding them in the interpretation of their playing. This collection was performed and recorded by Johan Smith, winner of the renowned GFA guitar contest (37th Guitar Foundation of America, Rose Augustine Grand Prize 2019).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In compiling this landmark sourcebook, Finnish guitarists Hannu Annala and Heiki Matlik consulted more than 70 music texts as well as dozens of composer resumes acquired from the musical information centers of several countries. During the writing process, which lasted for more than three years, they received additional information from many modern composers, including Leo Brouwer and Reginald Smith Brindle among others. In addition, several internationally renowned performing guitarists provided valuable information; these include Magnus Andersson (Sweden), Remi Boucher (Canada), Margarita Escarpa (Spain), Aleksander Frauchi (Russia) and David Tanenbaum (USA) among others. The authors' aim was to write a well-structured book with separate chapters for each instrument, such as the Renaissance and Baroque guitar, the Renaissance and Baroque lute, the vihuela, etc. This unique structure enables the reader to easily discover which composers wrote for a certain instrument during any given period. In addition to the composers one would expect to find in such a comprehensive listing, the book documents several historical and modern composers for whom little previous information has been available. the book's list of more than 400 guitar and lute concertos dating from the Baroque era to the present day is a totally unprecedented.Short introductions regarding guitar and lute-like instruments as well as their basic histories are provided at the beginning of the book. the authors hope that the Handbook of Guitar and Lute Composers will serve as a practical guide for both amateurs and professionals, encouraging further study of the history of these instruments and expanding the repertoire heard on today's concert stage.
