Cette thèse a comme objectif de faire avancer les connaissances sur les leviers et les freins du recours à cette pratique qui a fait ses preuves pour stimuler la capacité d’innovation des organisations. Globalement, cette thèse analyse les conditions qui expliquent le recours à la coopération en matière d’innovation et l’intensité de cette pratique chez les PME manufacturières. Ainsi, elle souligne les éléments sur lesquels les gestionnaires, les intervenants et les décideurs politiques, concernés par le développement et la promotion de l’innovation dans les entreprises, auraient intérêt à agir pour la favoriser.Plus précisément, une revue systématique de la littérature a tout d’abord permis de mieux définir le concept et d’identifier les déterminants de la coopération en matière d’innovation testés dans la littérature dans le cadre d’analyses quantitatives menées auprès de PME manufacturières. Elle cristallise les connaissances acquises en identifiant, en synthétisant et en discutant 53 déterminants et leurs 220 indicateurs uniques issus d'un corpus littéraire vaste et hétérogène. Elle introduit un cadre conceptuel rassemblant différentes perspectives pour aborder ce concept en présentant une vision globale et intégrée du sujet. Ce dernier regroupe les déterminants colligés en six grandes catégories qui sont, du général au particulier, relatives aux caractéristiques : environnementales, industrielles, organisationnelles, individuelles, du partenariat et du projet. Cette revue systématique identifie également les lacunes actuelles dans la littérature. Les perspectives de recherche fournies établissent une base, pour les recherches futures sur le sujet, en organisant et en s'appuyant sur la littérature qui a été publiée jusqu'à présent.Suite à ces constats, pour le volet empirique, une collecte de données par sondage par Internet et téléphonique auprès de dirigeants de PME manufacturières (n = 273) a permis de colliger des données pour affiner la compréhension du phénomène à l’étude. La région de Chaudière-Appalaches a été sélectionnée, car la combinaison de son entrepreneuriat exceptionnel, sa forte concentration d’entreprises manufacturières et son taux élevé d’innovation en font un endroit très attractif pour étudier ce phénomène.Des analyses statistiques ont été menées afin de dégager un portrait régional des pratiques de coopération en matière d’innovation des PME manufacturières. Des régressions ont permis d’identifier les leviers et les freins qui ont une incidence sur la propension des PME manufacturières à coopérer en innovation. Elles ont été comparées à l’intensité de coopération en matière d’innovation avec les partenaires du marché (clients, concurrents, consultants et fournisseurs) et les partenaires de recherche (laboratoires, établissements d’enseignement postsecondaire, centres de transfert de technologie et universités). Il s’agit d’un apport dans cette littérature dominée par les analyses binaires. L’impact des principaux freins et leviers a été hiérarchisé. Les analyses empiriques suggèrent que la coopération en matière d’innovation est favorisée par plusieurs déterminants clés. Cependant, elles soulignent qu’il existe des différences importantes entre les déterminants de la propension et de l’intensité de coopération en matière d’innovation.Les analyses quali-quantitatives comparées ont permis d’identifier qu’aucune condition n’est nécessaire et suffisante pour qu’une firme coopère en innovation. Diverses configurations de conditions sont toutefois propices à ce qu’elles y aient recours. Quelques leviers clés ont une incidence importante sur le recours à cette pratique, notamment une plus grande taille (nombre d’employés) et d’employés de R et D. Néanmoins, le réseautage du dirigeant fait également partie des configurations dégagées.Les avenues de recherche énoncées ouvrent la voie à de plus amples avancées sur le concept.

It has to do with defining the purpose of an organization, understanding the market in which it operates and the capabilities the firm possesses, and putting together a winning plan. There are many influential frameworks to help managers undertake a systematic reflection on this issue. The most dominant approaches are Michael Porter’s "Competitive Strategy" and the "Resource-Based View of the Firm," popularized by Gary Hamel and C.K. Prahalad. Arnoldo Hax argues there are fundamental drawbacks in the underlying hypotheses of these approaches in that they define strategy as a way to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. This line of thinking could be extremely dangerous because it puts the competitor at the center and therefore anchors you in the past, establishes success as a way of beating your competitors, and this obsession often leads toward imitation and congruency. The result is commoditization - which is the worst outcome that could possibly happen to a business. The Delta Model is an extremely innovative view of strategy. It abandons all of these assumptions and instead puts the customer at the center. By doing that it allows us to be truly creative, separating ourselves from the herd in pursuit of a unique and differentiated customer value proposition. Many years of intense research at MIT, supported by an extensive consulting practice, have resulted in development of powerful new concepts and practical tools to guide organizational leaders into a completely different way of looking at strategy, including a new way of doing customer segmentation and examining the competencies of the firm, with an emphasis on using the extended enterprise as a primary way of serving the customer.
