Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just crawling out from under the Victorian blanket, Europe was devastated by a gruesome war that consumed the flower of its youth. Tamagne dissects the strands of euphoria, rebellion, exploration, nostalgia and yearning, and the bonds forged at school and on the battlefront, in a scholarly treatise charting the early days of the homosexual and lesbian scene. The period between the two world wars was crucial in the history of homosexuality in Europe. It was then that homosexuality first came out into the light of day. Berlin became the capital of the new culture, and the center of a political movement seeking rights and protections for what we now call gays and lesbians. In England, the confruntation was brisk to undermine the structures and strictures of Victorianism; whereas in France (which was more tolerant, over all), homosexuality remained more subtle and nonmilitant. Tamagne's 2-volume work outlines the long and arduous journey from the shadows toward acceptability as the homosexual and lesbian community sets out to find a new legitimacy at various levels of society. She weaves together cultural references from literature, songs and theater, news stories and private correspondence, police reports and government documents to give a rounded picture of the evolving scene.

Book Synopsis A Survey of Sex and Celibacy in Religion by : T. Clifton Longworth
Download or read book A Survey of Sex and Celibacy in Religion written by T. Clifton Longworth and published by Book Tree. This book was released on 2003-04 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why was sex so important in early religions? Why have there been so many sexual scandals with priests? How and why did the practice of celibacy begin? Is being celibate psychologically helpful to monks, nuns, and others who must practice it? This book examines the role of sex in religion from the earliest known time of pre-Christian cults up into the modern day. It is the only book we know of that approaches the problem of sex and celibacy in religion in such a complete and thorough way. It describes an age-old struggle being waged by religious representatives between their own natural state of human sexuality and its complete suppression in the name of God.

Book Synopsis Sex and Race, Volume 2 by : J. A. Rogers
Download or read book Sex and Race, Volume 2 written by J. A. Rogers and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Sex and Race series, first published in the 1940s, historian Joel Augustus Rogers questioned the concept of race, the origins of racial differentiation, and the root of the "color problem." Rogers surmised that a large percentage of ethnic differences are the result of sociological factors and in these volumes he gathered what he called "the bran of history"—the uncollected, unexamined history of black people—in the hope that these neglected parts of history would become part of the mainstream body of Western history. Drawing on a vast amount of research, Rogers was attempting to point out the absurdity of racial divisions. Indeed his belief in one race—humanity—precluded the idea of several different ethnic races. The series marshals the data he had collected as evidence to prove his underlying humanistic thesis: that people were one large family without racial boundaries. Self-trained and self-published, Rogers and his work were immensely popular and influential during his day, even cited by Malcolm X. The books are presented here in their original editions.

Book Synopsis Communism and the Emergence of Democracy by : Harald Wydra
Download or read book Communism and the Emergence of Democracy written by Harald Wydra and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before democracy becomes an institutionalised form of political authority, the rupture with authoritarian forms of power causes deep uncertainty about power and outcomes. This book connects the study of democratisation in eastern Europe and Russia to the emergence and crisis of communism. Wydra argues that the communist past is not simply a legacy but needs to be seen as a social organism in gestation, where critical events produce new expectations, memories and symbols that influence meanings of democracy. By examining a series of pivotal historical events, he shows that democratisation is not just a matter of institutional design, but rather a matter of consciousness and leadership under conditions of extreme and traumatic incivility. Rather than adopting the opposition between non-democratic and democratic, Wydra argues that the communist experience must be central to the study of the emergence and nature of democracy in (post-) communist countries.
