Book excerpt: With a Foreword by Lars Vinx, this book is the first complete English translation of the Italian jurist, Emilio Betti’s classic work Die Hermeneutik als allgemeine Methodik der Geisteswissenschaften, originally published in 1962. Betti’s hermeneutical theory is presented here as a ‘general methodology of the sciences of the spirit’, such as to allow the achievement of objectivity, however relative it might be. Its central focus is the tension between an object, to be considered in its autonomy, and the subjectivity of the interpreter, who can understand the object only by means of his or her own categories, historical-cultural conditions, and interests. Set against the work of Bultmann and Gadamer, Betti is concerned to limit the arbitrariness of subjectivity without diminishing the place of interpretation. Detailing the principles that govern, and therefore, guide any interpretation, Betti traces how interpretation in art and in literature, as well as in the fields of science, jurisprudence, sociology, and economy, can be said to be objective, albeit only ever in a relative sense. No better sort had been obtained by semi imported German scholars like Martin Heidegger and Georg Gadamer. Vico was officially introduced to America by Giorgio Tagliacozzo, the founder of Vico Studies journal, the product of Vico Institute of New York and Emory University, Department of Philosophy. These agencies, however, flourished from the1980' and continued through the first decade of the 21st century. If we include, within our present consideration, the decade of the 1970s, then we can say that for the last four decades the philosopher of Naples, Vico, constituted with his own ideas about history and the nature of nations the background of the thought of Betti's theory of hermeneutics and also a challenging obstacle to the theories of Heidegger, Heidegger's disciples and Georg Gadamer. Even though Betti during this interval of forty years, thanks also to Richard Palmer's publications, has become much more known and discussed by scholars in various field of studies and in different languages, we believe that our book by showing the true roots of Betti's grown hermeneutic tree offers unexpected insights and analysis. This book, having been a doctoral thesis in its first format, has been known only by two or three individuals and then, after a copy reached the Library of Congress, has been almost forgotten. CreateSpace made possible its publishing by my repeating on the track of the old Remington Typewriter with my Ausus computer the long walk with my older fingers. I did it more for my own pleasure and ego and for a celebration of Vico and Betti to which I wish to return in my studies. The object of criticism, on the other hand, is that meaning in its bearing on something else (standards of value, present concerns, etc.), and this object may therefore may be called the significance of the text. If textual meaning itself could change, contemporary readers would lack a basis for agreement or disagreement. No one would bother seriously to discuss such a protean object. The interpreter has to distinguish what a text implies from what it does not imply; he must give the text its full due, but he must also preserve norms and limits. For hermeneutic theory, the problem is to find a principle for judging whether various possible implications should or should not be admitted. By classifying the text as belonging to a particular genre, the interpreter automatically posits a general horizon for its meaning. The genre provides a sense of the whole, a notion of typical meaning components. Thus, before we interpret a text, we often classify it as casual conversation, lyric poem, military command, scientific prose, occasional verse, novel, epic, etc. The interpreter's job is to specify the text's horizon as far as he is able, and this means, ultimately, that he must familiarize himself with the typical meanings of the author's mental and experiential world. Hermeneutics must stress the reconstruction of the author's aims and attitudes in order to evolve guides and norms for construing the meaning of the text. Ambiguity or, for that matter, vagueness is not the same as indeterminateness. This is the crux of the issue. To say that verbal meaning is determinate is not to exclude complexities of meaning but only to insist that a text's meaning is what it is and not a hundred other things. Taken in this sense, a vague or ambiguous text is just as determinate as a logical proposition; it means what it means and nothing else.
