Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent have Hollywood feature films shaped the meanings that Americans attach to alcoholics, their families, and the alcoholic condition? To what extent has the mass culture of the movie industry itself been conceptually shaped by a broad, external societal discourse? Norman Denzin brings to his life-long study of alcoholism a searching interest in how cultural texts signify and lend themselves to interpretation within a social nexus. Both historical and diachronic in his approach, Denzin identifies five periods in the alcoholism films made between 1932 and the end of the 1980s, and offers a detailed critical reading of thirty-seven films produced during these six decades. "Professor Denzin has produced a searching and provocative interpretation of more than a half-century of Hollywood's social and personal construction of the problem drinker in America. Readable by both lay persons and specialists, Denzin's book provides us with the most comprehensive understanding of this topic to date."--Stanford M. Lyman, Robert J. Morrow Eminent Scholar in Social Science, Florida Atlantic University "An eminent sociologist and leading authority on alcoholism, Denzin also writes skillfully about films as films and is comfortable with postmodern interpretive theoryƃ a genuinely interdisciplinary work of the first order." --Robert L. Carringer, author, The Making of Citizen Kane "Denzin has gone on an exhaustive bar-crawl through hundreds of movies, returning with evidence that the film about drinking is a genre of its own. He writes from sound knowledge about alcoholism--which, unlike other diseases, is frequently viewed with bittersweet romanticism."--Roger Ebert Norman K. Denzin is professor of sociology, cinema studies, and interpretive theory at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He was awarded the George Herbert Mead Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction. He is the author of several books, including Screening Race: Hollywood and a Cinema of Racial Violence, The Recovering Alcoholic, Interpretive Ethnography, Images of Postmodernism: Social Theory and Contemporary Cinema, and Interpretive Interactionism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bio-bibliography is the first book to examine the life and career of one of Hollywood's most durable leading men, Richard Widmark. Though never considered in the same star category as Burt Lancaster or Gregory Peck, his era, Widmark nonetheless established himself as a dependable and popular leading man in westerns, dramas, adventures, gangster and war films, and by 1984, he had appeared in 62 full-length films. From his earliest days in radio and on stage, to more recent appearances in films and on television, the entire performing arts career of Richard Widmark is chronicled in this volume, and documented with complete bibliographic entries. Respecting Widmark's reputation for privacy, Holston has focused on the public aspect of the actor's career, tracing the abundance of interesting on-screen events that have made up his life. The book begins with a chronology of significant dates and events in Widmark's career and is followed by a biographical sketch. Separate sections cite credits for radio, Broadway stage, film, and television appearances, as well as a complete listing of Widmark works that are available on home video. The book concludes with a lengthy annotated bibliography of works about Widmark, as well as a complete index. A number of illustrations are also included. As the only book devoted exclusively to Richard Widmark, this work will be a valuable resource to film fans and scholars, an important reference for courses on motion picture history and the development of the film industry, and a significant addition to university and public libraries.

Book excerpt: Although the importance of Elvis Presley's Southern heritage has long been recognized, few have considered the complex connection between the performer's career and his Southern roots. This study investigates how that identity affected each stage of Presley's career. Elvis Presley's career can be divided into three phases, each of which is signified by a specific image. Each image is coded by a certain style of music, mode of dress, and arena of performance. The evolution from one career phase to another was instigated by a specific event and represented a deliberate calculation on the part of Presley's manager to attract a wider audience. The first stage spans the years 1956 through 1958, after the singer was introduced to a national audience and before he was drafted into the army. His image as a notorious rock 'n' roller created a national controversy and was spurred by negative depictions of Presley in the media-many attributing his controversial performing style and appearance to his Southern background. His music was a fusion of rhythm and blues and country-western; or, two types of music indigenous to the South and foreign to the mainstream entertainment industry based in New York City. The second phase of Elvis' career included his stint as a movie star, in which most aspects of his Southern identity were extracted from his leading man image to enhance his appeal to the mainstream. And, finally, the last stage of his career focused on his image as a Las Vegas performer. Despite the gaudy costumes, Elvis reconnected to his identity as a Southerner in the 1970s by returning to country music and songwriters as a source of inspiration.
