In this history of papal social teaching, Joe Holland tells how the popes at first backed the status quo. Then, with the accession of Pope Leo XIII in 1878, a seismic shift took place. Book excerpt: These memoirs comprise the life and life-work of the late Sovereign Pontiff of the Catholic Church, Leo XIII, his splendid achievements as a churchman, a statesman, and a scholar. He lived through the greater portion of the nineteenth century, and was well into the twentieth before he died. He left the stamp of his magnificent genius upon the present age in such a pronounced way that it will be known for generations to come as the Leonine Century. At various periods of his Pontificate, especially on the occasions of his jubilee celebrations, biographies have been published in many languages. All the principal events of his youth, his growth into manhood, his studies in preparation for the priesthood, his priestly career, his labors as delegate to Benevento and to Umbria, his nunciature at Brussels, Belgium, his episcopal labors in Perugia, his cardinalate, his successful services in behalf of the Church as its Sovereign Pontiff, and his wonderful work through his Encyclicals, have been told and retold. The writer of this biography has endeavored to condense within these pages a multitude of facts of the Holy Father's eventful career gathered from oral traditions, personal reminiscences, and a knowledge of local environments.

Download or read book The Fundamental Fallacy of Socialism written by Arthur Preuss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Fallacy of Socialism: An Exposition of the Question of Landownership, Comprising an Authentic Account of the Famous McGlynn Case Who owns the land? To this question two answers are given: The land is the common property of all men, or the land of each coun try belongs to the whole people of that coun try as their common property. This is the answer Of Communists, Socialists and Agra rians. The rest of mankind deny this com mon landownership and maintain that the land is owned in severalty, either by individ uals or by corporations. The best known and most enthusiastic advocate of common landownership is Henry George; the most prominent defender Of private ownership in land is Pope Leo XIII. The teachings of Henry George are chiefly comprised in his Progress and Poverty and in his Open Letter to Pope Leo XIII.; those of Leo XIII. In his Encyclical Rerum No varum, of May 15th, 1891. Henry George considers private property in land to be the ultimate root and source of the social evils which are so keenly felt and' so bitterly deplored by all. The real cause Of the evil being ascertained, the true remedy is Obvious: we must abolish private property in land and substitute common ownership. But is the abolition Of private landownership in harmony with natural justice? It is, be cause private ownership of land is essentially and irremediably wrong and unjust.
