Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gemmy's Dreams is a fictional novel that tells of a family's day-to-day life on a small farm in eastern North Carolina. It is the third book in a series about the Lister family. Gemmy's Dreams continues the story where the second book, Life on Heartsville Farm, ends. The Listers have established a good life in the rural community of Heartsville. They have found a community that has accepted them without prejudices. The story unfolds in the mid-1950s and is told mostly through the eyes of one of the young Lister girls. Complications of family dynamics continues to place roadblocks in their lives that must be resolved, altered, or accepted. Gemmy and four of the Lister children are rejected by their paternal grandmother because they are part Cherokee. The paternal grandmother is from the Tuscarora tribe and considers the Cherokee tribe as inferior and enemies of her people. The Listers rely on faith and God's promises to navigate through the life that God has given them. Detailed are how the people that God places in the children's lives work to fill the void left by relatives that refuse to accept the Lister children. The children choose people to fill some of the holes in their hearts left by the lack of interest of others. Highlighted are the people that cross paths with the family. Gemmy has a history of having prophetic dreams that come to fruition. Gemmy considers these dreams a blessing when a good future is predicted. She considers them a curse when the dreams foretell of sadness or misfortune. These dreams cause Gemmy a great deal of stress as she watches them fulfill in her life and the lives of her family members. The Listers seek God's strength and guidance to lead them through their hardships and struggles. Deaths, family illnesses, and hurricane damages threaten to destroy the family's life on the farm. They have loving and supportive friends and neighbors that help them through their challenges. The Lister children learn that knowing how not to act is just as important as knowing how to act.
Book Synopsis Into a Raging Sea by : Bernie Webber
Download or read book Into a Raging Sea written by Bernie Webber and published by Good Night Books. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people familiar with the name Bernie Webber associate him with the miraculous rescue of 32 men off of the stern of the Pendleton, made famous in the book and movie The Finest Hours. Rescuing 32 sailors from a sinking ship caught in a ferocious winter storm is a dramatic tale, but what made this mission so special is that the boat Bernie skippered that terrible night was a mere 36 feet in length and the waves were almost twice that size! Bernie and crew received the Coast Guard’s coveted Gold Lifesaving Medal, and what they did on that stormy night is regarded as the greatest small boat rescue in history. In Into A Raging Sea, Bernie tells that story, but the book is so much more than that. In these pages you’ll read about rescue attempts that did not turn out well, stories of fishermen from a time long past, rescues done with the by-gone technique of the “breeches buoy,” humorous anecdotes, and what Cape Cod and its people meant to Bernie. Into a Raging Sea is a story of sacrifice, bravery, disappointment, and challenges. And in the background of Bernie’s journey is one constant, the sea. --from the forward by Michael J. Tougias

Book excerpt: With Mayor Beau accused of abuse of power and facing federal indictment, a relentless curse after her unborn nephew, and a moody, uncommunicative spirit in her room, reluctant ghost-helper Graciela Harper figures she’s got enough on her plate. The universe, as usual, figures otherwise. On a girls trip to Charleston that’s meant to give Beau some space and cheer up her cousin, Amelia, a second ghost follows Gracie back to Heron Creek. As she digs into the mystery behind the Whistling Doctor of Dueler’s Alley, things at home go from bad to worse. Leo’s not talking to her, Amelia’s depression is putting her health at risk, and Beau…well, maybe he’s not as innocent as Gracie always believed. All that takes a back seat when Gracie’s run off the road on her way back from a research trip, forcing her to face the possibility that her ghost’s secrets might not be about harmless lost love after all. In fact, he’s been the only person aware of certain documents for over two hundred years, and if Gracie helps unearth them she might find herself trapped underground…permanently.
Download or read book Keeper and Kid written by Edward Hardy and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2008-01-08 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Keeper and Kid is a marvel. I dare you. Open this book and try to put it down." ---Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Room Eight years ago, James Keeper fell in love with his upstairs neighbor in Boston, a sassy pastry chef with gray eyes and a fierce attitude. They got married, found a dog, and shopped for cilantro. But conflicting schedules and a real estate deal gone bad took its toll on the twenty-somethings in love. One divorce later, the hand-me-down chairs were separated, the potato masher custody settled, and Keeper moved to Providence to work with his best friend selling antiques at a quirky shop called Love and Death. A new job, a new love, and a new life now in place, Keeper is in a comfortable situation. Business is steady, Leah (the new love) is intriguing and passionate, and Keeper's friends always turn up for Sunday evening Card Night. But one phone call from his former mother-in-law changes everything. And so days later, Keeper comes away with a son he never knew he had, and life all of a sudden takes on a new meaning. Leo, the precocious three-year-old who sports Keeper's square chin, is more than a handful---he eats only round foods, refuses to bathe, thinks he's a bear, and refers to Leah as "that man." For a guy who never thought he'd be a parent, Keeper is thrown headfirst into fatherhood---and has no idea what to do. As Keeper and Leo adjust to the shock of each other and their suddenly very different lives, Keeper begins to let the people in his life in, in turns strange and heartwarming, funny and painful. But some, like Leah, aren't so eager for change. In this humorous and poignant novel, Edward Hardy explores the depths of modern love, parenthood, and compromise. Keeper and Kid is the story of how a normal guy receives an unexpected gift and in turn must learn to ask more of others and himself. A coming-of-age story for the guy who thought he had already grown up, Keeper and Kid is a sharp and witty account of what we do for love. Advance Praise for Keeper and Kid "A fine, fetching novel with a good heart. Keeper is nimble and affecting, a tribute to the author's endless comic inventiveness."---Stewart O'Nan, author of The Good Wife "At once immensely engaging and about the things that matter most: how we love, how we move on, how the past moves with us. Lovely, wise, and surprising."---Elizabeth Graver, author of The Honey Thief "Ed Hardy's voice in Keeper and Kid grabs you and won't let you go until the very last page. Full of local color, bittersweet characters, and a story we can all relate to---the day your past arrives on the doorstep of your present life."---Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Room

Book Synopsis Shipwrecks of Cape Cod: Stories of Tragedy and Triumph by : Donald Wilding
Download or read book Shipwrecks of Cape Cod: Stories of Tragedy and Triumph written by Donald Wilding and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the wreck of the Sparrow-Hawk in 1626 to the grounding of the Eldia in 1984, Cape Cod's outer beach--often referred to as the "Graveyard of Ships"--saw the demise of more than three thousand vessels along forty miles of shifting shoals. The October Gale of 1841 claimed the lives of fifty-seven sailors from Truro, a devastating toll for a small seaside community. Survivors from the 1896 wreck of the Monte Tabor in Provincetown were arrested for a suspected mutiny. Aboard the Castagna, which stranded off Wellfleet in 1914, several sailors froze to death in the masts, while the crew's cat survived. Local author Don Wilding revisits these and many other maritime disasters, along with the heroic, and sometimes tragic, rescue efforts of the U.S. Life-Saving Service and Coast Guard.

Download or read book Charming Grace written by Deborah Smith and published by BelleBooks. This book was released on 2008-06-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace's husband was a heroic Atlanta police officer who died while stopping a terrorist attack. Now a bombastic Hollywood action star is filming the story against Grace's wishes, complete with bad dialogue, dumb action scenes and absolutely no understanding of the troubled, yet decent, man, her husband was. When Grace starts battling the star she runs afoul of his handsome ex-con bodyguard, Boone Nolene, who has enough patchy history to give most women the shivers. But Boone is a good guy just trying to do his job while falling in love with Grace. Big fun romantic fiction from NYT bestseller Deborah Smith.
