Book Synopsis Parallelism, Learning, Evolution by : J.D. Becker
Download or read book Parallelism, Learning, Evolution written by J.D. Becker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-12-04 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of a workshop on evolutionary models and strategies and another workshop on parallel processing, logic, organization, and technology, both held in Germany in 1989. In the search for new concepts relevant for parallel and distributed processing, the workshop on parallel processing included papers on aspects of space and time, representations of systems, non-Boolean logics, metrics, dynamics and structure, and superposition and uncertainties. The point was stressed that distributed representations of information may share features with quantum physics, such as the superposition principle and the uncertainty relations. Much of the volume contains material on general parallel processing machines, neural networks, and system-theoretic aspects. The material on evolutionary strategies is included because these strategies will yield important and powerful applications for parallel processing machines, and open the wayto new problem classes to be treated by computers.

Download or read book Why We Play written by Roberte Hamayon and published by Hau. This book was released on 2016 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Play is one of humanity's straightforward yet deceitful ideas: though the notion is unanimously agreed upon to be universal, used for man and animal alike, nothing defines what all its manifestations share, from childish playtime to on stage drama, from sporting events to market speculation. Within the author's anthropological field of work (Mongolia and Siberia), playing holds a core position: national holidays are called "Games," echoing in that way the circus games in Ancient Rome and today's Olympics. These games convey ethical values and local identity. Roberte Hamayon bases her analysis of the playing spectrum on their scrutiny. Starting from fighting and dancing, encompassing learning, interaction, emotion and strategy, this study heads towards luck and belief as well as the ambiguity of the relation to fiction and reality. It closes by indicating two features of play: its margin and its metaphorical structure. Ultimately revealing its consistency and coherence, the author displays play as a modality of action of its own. "Playing is no 'doing' in the ordinary sense" once wrote Johan Huizinga. Isn't playing doing something else, elswhere and otherwise ?
Download or read book Beauvoir in Time written by Meryl Altman and published by Value Inquiry Book. This book was released on 2020 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beauvoir in Time situates Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex in the historical context of its writing and in later contexts of its international reception, from then till now. The book takes up three aspects of Beauvoir's work more recent feminists find embarrassing: "bad sex," "dated" views about lesbians, and intersections with race and class. Through close reading of her writing in many genres, alongside contemporaneous discourses (good and bad novels in French and English, outmoded psychoanalytic and sexological authorities, ethnographic surrealism, the writing of Richard Wright and Franz Fanon), and in light of her travels to the U.S. and China, the author uncovers insights more recent feminist methodologies obscure, showing Beauvoir is still good to think with today"--

Download or read book Of Human Born written by Caroline Arni and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new history of the concept of fetal life in the human sciences At a time when the becoming of a human being in a woman’s body has, once again, become a fraught issue—from abortion debates and surrogacy controversies to prenatal diagnoses and assessments of fetal risk—Of Human Born presents the largely unknown history of how the human sciences came to imagine the unborn in terms of “life before birth.” Caroline Arni shows how these sciences created the concept of “fetal life” by way of experimenting on animals, pregnant women, and newborns; how they worried about the influence of the expectant mother’s living conditions; and how they lingered on the question of the beginnings of human subjectivity. Such were the concerns of physiologists, pediatricians, psychologists, and psychoanalysts as they advanced the novel discipline of embryology while, at the same time, grappling with age-old questions about the coming-into-being of a human person. Of Human Born thus draws attention to the fundamental way in which modern approaches to the unborn have been intertwined with the configuration of “the human” in the age of scientific empiricism. Arni revises the narrative that the “modern embryo” is quintessentially an embryo disembedded from the pregnant woman’s body. On the contrary, she argues that the concept of fetal life cannot be separated from its dependency on the maternal organism, countering the rhetorical discourses that have fueled the recent rollback of abortion rights in the United States.

Book Synopsis Civilization without Sexes by : Mary Louise Roberts
Download or read book Civilization without Sexes written by Mary Louise Roberts and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the raucous decade following World War I, newly blurred boundaries between male and female created fears among the French that theirs was becoming a civilization without sexes. This new gender confusion became a central metaphor for the War's impact on French culture and led to a marked increase in public debate concerning female identity and woman's proper role. Mary Louise Roberts examines how in these debates French society came to grips with the catastrophic horrors of the Great War. In sources as diverse as parliamentary records, newspaper articles, novels, medical texts, writings on sexology, and vocational literature, Roberts discovers a central question: how to come to terms with rapid economic, social, and cultural change and articulate a new order of social relationships. She examines the role of French trauma concerning the War in legislative efforts to ban propaganda for abortion and contraception, and explains anxieties about the decline of maternity by a crisis in gender relations that linked soldiery, virility, and paternity. Through these debates, Roberts locates the seeds of actual change. She shows how the willingness to entertain, or simply the need to condemn, nontraditional gender roles created an indecisiveness over female identity that ultimately subverted even the most conservative efforts to return to traditional gender roles and irrevocably altered the social organization of gender in postwar France.
