Calvin se pensait en effet comme élu de Dieu sur le modèle des élus de l'Ancien et du Nouveau Testament. Prophète et apôtre, il mena - spécialement à Genève - ses combats en reprenant avec opiniâtreté, comme un acteur monté sur une scène, les paroles et les gestes des acteurs des temps bibliques : Abraham, Job, Saül, David, Jonas, Paul... Il fonda ainsi une foi évangélique qui tentait de rompre avec les angoisses dont il avait lui-même souffert avant sa conversion, avec les illusions dont à ses yeux les chrétiens de son temps étaient bercés ; une foi rassurante qu'il s'efforça sans relâche de communiquer. Même lorsqu'il proclamait que Dieu haïssait les incrédules et que Sa justice s'exerçait inexorablement sur tous ceux qui vivaient dans le péché, il agissait en croyant débordant d'un amour qui épousait l'amour divin. Il serait donc anachronique de discerner en lui un inventeur ou même un accoucheur de la " modernité ", car il se comprend au sein d'un XVIe siècle envahi par des doutes et des craintes, travaillé par la question lancinante du salut, mais aussi ouvert à une profonde espérance, au désir de faire de la vie de tous les jours une sagesse.
