Book excerpt: LENAS LEGIONS is a tongue in cheek political thriller that suggests one determined woman is ultimately responsible for many of the woes experienced by male politicos over the past decade. Lena, disaffected by both abuse as a child and a conniving husband (whom she divorces), becomes independently wealthy as the result of an inheritance from her grandmother. Uninterested in the social landscape she becomes a professor at a small girls college and recruits a cadre of young women who share her militant feminist zeal. At Lenas direction the women form a network of moles who play havoc with all the chauvinists in Washington DC. If Lena doesnt like you, you better get out of town!

But their foundation crumbles at the moment their ancient enemy brings war back to Earth. Langston Wheeler, a young Hand with a scandalous past, survives the first strike in an interstellar war. He comes home to warn his fellow Gentle Hands of a shadowy threat already at their door. But his message falls on deaf ears, not least because everyone remembers his infamous dalliance with a woman he should never have loved. Cleo Sable endured nearly six years of exile before the call came, summoning her back to Earth for the war. Coming home is sweet. Sweeter still is the thought of the man she left behind -- the man for whom she gave up everything. But the first thing she sees on the voyage out of exile is Langston Wheeler in the arms of another woman. Lang and Cleo must face their past and understand their future, if they have one. But the rules of the Gentle Hand won't let them be together, and the war won't give them time to figure it out. Each must choose between the path of service and the path of power, with no guarantee that the other will make the same choice. Their decisions echo across the stars as cataclysmic war explodes all around them, plunging the Gentle Hand into a bloody fight for their very survival.

Learn why Babe Ruth shopped in Maynard during his Red Sox days and what they fed the animals at the Taylor mink ranch. Find out who is buried--and who is not--in the Maynard family crypt and which rock 'n' roll bands recorded in the studio upstairs from Woolworths on Main Street. Almost lost to time, these remarkable moments in history helped shape Maynard into the vibrant community that it is today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigrant American soldiers played an important, often underrated role in World War I. Those who were non-citizens had no obligation to participate in the war, though many volunteered. Due to language barriers that prevented them from receiving proper training, they were often given the most dangerous and dirty jobs. The impetus for this book was the story of Matthew Guerra (the author's great-uncle). He immigrated to America from Italy around age 12. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1918 and shipped to France, where he joined the 58th Infantry Regiment of the 4th "Ivy" Division and participated in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives. Wounded in the Bois de Fays, the 22-year-old Guerra died in a field hospital.

In an instant, an unprecedented Legion assault wrought untold destruction upon nations across the world. As humanity’s borders are sent into swift decline, Shin and Lena are tasked with a large-scale rescue operation that brings them back to Republic soil after what seems like a lifetime. Yet even with humanity on the brink of extinction, they find a country that hasn’t changed—one that cannot change. Many survivors view rescue by the Eighty-Six as the height of indignity. Similarly, many Eighty-Six are reluctant to lend aid to those who stripped away their humanity. But behind the cavernous, silver eyes of the mechanical ghosts lays a single, gruesome directive...

The Eighty-Six’s minds are heavy with thoughts of close friends and bitter enemies swallowed by the cold, dark abyss. Among the casualties are Shana, Shiden’s vice captain, joining the fallen in their watery grave, and Theo, whose loss of his left hand had all but sealed his fate as a Processor. As Shiden swears revenge, Kurena, who blames herself for Shana’s death, cracks beneath the weight of her guilt. While the Eighty-Six struggle to pick up the pieces, though, the Legion inexorably pursue their bloodless objective, and the Noctiluca has reportedly taken refuge in the surviving Holy Theocracy of Noiryanaruse. Now Shin and company must set foot in the mysterious western nation of which even the United Kingdom and the Federacy are wary…
