Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its holistic view of human beings and its treatment approach, focusing on the individual and his or her personal needs and characteristics, C.G. Jung's analytical psychology is capable of expanding depth-psychological and psychodynamic treatment concepts into a modern, integrative approach. The book links the essential elements of analytical psychology and psychotherapy with the current state of psychotherapy research. Special emphasis is given to working with the unconscious and its symbolism. How does the unconscious present itself in fantasies, dreams, imaginations and clinical pictures, as well as in the patients' resources? Analytical psychology's points of access to the patient=s inner self, to the intersubjectivity of the therapeutic relationship and to the processes of transfer and counter-transfer are presented, and the differences between this and other forms of therapy are traced out. A special aspect of the book is that particular attention is given to accessing and making use of the creative potential of both patients and therapists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis (OPD) is a form of multiaxial diagnostic and classification system based on psychodynamic principles, analogous to those based on other principles such as DSM-IV and ICD-10. The OPD is based on five axes: I = experience of illness and prerequisites for treatment, II = interpersonal relations, III = conflict, IV = structure, and V = mental and psychosomatic disorders (in line with Chapter V (F) of the ICD-10). After an initial interview lasting 1–2 hours, the clinician (or researcher) can evaluate the patient's psychodynamics according to these axes and enter them in the checklists and evaluation forms provided. The new version, OPD-2, has been developed from a purely diagnostic system to include a set of tools and procedures for treatment planning and for measuring change, as well as for determining the appropriate main focuses of treatment and developing appropriate treatment strategies.

Book excerpt: Closely geared to general practice yet without neglecting basic theory, this book has retained so much appeal among readers .as to warrant a third edition. We assume that the work has retained its place among the leading publications on psychosomatics because it embodies our strong interest in the 'here and now' of medical practice. The timing of this thoroughly revised and enlarged edition appears opportune as psychosomatic basic care and the medicine of dialogue acquire more meaning in daily routine practice, and as the need for basic information increases. We conceive psychosomatics to be an integral part of medicine. When we speak of 'psychosomatic disorders' in this book, our premise is that somatic and psychosocial aspects play an important role in their pathogenesis and course. This notion constitutes the very basis of what is understood as psychosomatic medical treatment. Such a point of departure calls for a consistent spirit of cooperation with regard to the problems involved. This alone satisfies the initial requirement of simultaneously considering both the somatic and psychosocial aspects of health and illness.

Book excerpt: A basic issue for all those essaying to write comprehensive texts on the nature of psychoanalysis, whether oriented primarily to the exposition of the theory or of the technique of psychoanalysis, - within the American literature the books by Brenner and by Greenson come to mind as exemplars of the two categories - is that of the relationship of the theory to the technique and the practice. This issue is however not always brought into explicit focus in this literature and thereby its problematic nature as a fundamental and not yet satisfactorily re solved dilemma of our discipline is often glossed over, or even by passed completely, as if we could comfortably assume that Freud had, uniquely in the world's intellectual history, fully succeeded in creating a science and a discipline in which the theory (the understanding) and the therapy (i. e. , the cure) were inherently together and truly the same, but two sides of the same coin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological and philosophical anthropologies of the 20th century keep emphasising the "Sonderstellung" of humans among the realm of living beings. However, it is not clear how this particular role should be characterised, how it should be reconciled with biological findings, and which theoretical and practical conclusions should be drawn from it. Partly in opposition to these anthropological views on humankind biological disciplines underline the extensive similarities and common characteristics between humans and other species. Apparently, these biological findings concur with the criticism of anthropocentrism, which is expressed in Western philosophy of nature and by ethicists. To discuss these issues the Europäische Akademie organized the conference "The Uniqueness of Humankind – Über die Sonderstellung des Menschen". The proceedings of the conference documented in this volume approached the theoretical and practical concept of the "Sonderstellung" against the background of present day knowledge in biosciences. Furthermore, by interdisciplinary efforts, an attempt was made to clarify those conceptual problems that arise with the idea of the uniqueness of humankind. The present volume partly takes up and further develops topics that have been raised by volume 15, On Human Nature, that was published in this series in 2002.

Book excerpt: The concept of a "directing object" is based on extensive clinical observations linked to a combination of ego psychology and object relations theory in the tradition of Otto Kernberg and Anne Marie and Joseph Sandler. People with a phobic disposition are those who were not, during childhood, permitted to learn by trial and error and thus gain confidence in their actions. They did not learn to direct their own actions and did not develop confidence in their capability to act successfully. In their inner world, they did not establish an internal directing object. Thus, they now need an external directing object, who watches over them. This has considerable influence on interpersonal relationships and on work. Phobic persons can work without difficulty when there is a external directing object, but they will not be able to work without such a companion. In therapy, they use their therapist as a directing object, which can create the illusion that the phobic patient is already much better. However the patient will fall back into phobic symptomatology when the therapist is no longer available as a directing object. Applying the concept of a directing object helps to understand a phobic person's psychodynamics. This will improve the results of therapy, and also help phobic persons to compensate difficulties arising from the lack of a companion, and deal with difficulties in finding and keeping one. Therapy can help them to develop their own internal directing object.

Book excerpt: Professor Nossrat Peseschkian, M.D. (1933-2010), a German Board-certified specialist in psychiatry, neurology, psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy, was born in Iran and lived in Germany since 1954. After graduating from Frankfurt University, he received his postgraduate psychotherapeutic training in Germany, Switzerland and in the United States. Besides his daily work in his psychosomatic and psychotherapeutic private clinic in Wiesbaden, Germany (1969-2000), he was an associate professor for psychotherapy at the Academy of Continuing Medical Education of the State Medical Association in Hesse since 1974. He is the founder of Positive Psychotherapy, a humanistic psychodynamic method based on a transcultural and interdisciplinary approach. Positive Psychotherapy has been introduced by Professor Peseschkian in seminars and lectures at universities and medical centers in more than 70 countries world-wide. Professor Peseschkian was the founding director of the Wiesbaden Academy of Psychotherapy, a licensed postgraduate institute for medical doctors and psychologists, the founding president of the World Association for Positive Psychotherapy (WAPP) and the German Association for Positive Psychotherapy (DGPP). This book, Positive Psychosomatics, is - out of 31 other monographs Peseschkians main clinical book on the application of Positive Psychotherapy in the understanding and treatment of different disorders and illnesses. The authors model to focus on the resources and positive aspects of conflicts - together with a transcultural perspective in the form of proverbs, myths and fables and the use of special techniques and practical tools, have made not only the book, but this approach very successful in the treatment of patients with somatic, somatoform and neurotic disorders. Forty different disorders are explained in detail and also their therapeutic approach. A questionnaire at the end of each chapter gives the therapist and his patients a clear guideline in their hands. Revised edition: International Academy for Positive and Transcultural Psychotherapy Peseschkian Foundation, Wiesbaden, Germany
