Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saints and Sinners, Vol. 2 of 2: Or, in Church and About It In those old days an abbot was a princely person, especially reverenced, and scrupulously obeyed. When he passed by, all inferior brethren rose and saluted their chief. At night it was no less a person than his own chaplain who carried the lantern before him No one could walk by his side except to mass, and no man ever dared sit by the side of a lord abbot without in vitation, except a Soverfign prince; and he who was invited to Sit near him first bowed lowly, and then took his seat with the air of a man who thought the honour far beyond his merits. Whoever presented any object to the abbot, or received from him any thing, always kissed his hand. In short, no king had more courteous allegiance paid him than a lord abbot in a great monastery. If an archbishop now were to order his chaplain to carry a lantern before him, the good man would be amazed, but an abbot's chaplain would have kissed his lord's hand and have ushered him with pride as being, or rather as bearing, a light upon his path. Rocke was born in Montpelier, which is a town of great name upon the border of France, and was born of noble progeny. His father was lord of Montpelier, and was named John, and was come of the noble house of France. And though he was noble of birth, and rich of lordship, he was also virtuous in all humanity. He had a wife of noble kindred and fair of visage named Libera, which both devoutly served our Lord Jesu Christ, and lived in divine love and holy works. And how well that they thus had lived long, yet had they no child ne heir, wherefore they oft made their prayers, and vowed pilgrimages. And on a day most specially, the wife made her prayers to our Blessed Lady, praying devoutly for to have a child, and was in very contemplation, in which she heard the voice of an angel saying: O Libera, God hath heard thy prayer, and thou shalt receive of him grace of thy petition. And anon she went to her husband and told him as she had heard of the angel. And then they, hereof joyful, accomplished the act of matrimony, and she conceived, and at time was delivered of a son, which in his baptism was named Rochus or Rocke. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1910, this collection of stories compiled by Mrs. C.R. Peers involves saintly figures in the Catholic Church set amidst a historically relevant backdrop. Of the 9 legendary stories included in the compilation, 2 focused on a non-human subject - the Westminster Abbey. However, both still involved saints, namely Edward the Confessor and Mellitus, Bishop of London. These colorful accounts have never really been established as complete truths, although some parts of each anecdote can be verified by certain events recorded in history. Some of them allegedly real stories, although some parts were exaggerated, omitted, or replaced with more interesting situations or characters. Take for example the story about St. Francis and the wolf of Gubbio. It has been maintained through the years that the account was merely a legend, as there was no solid evidence proving that such an episode happened in the life of the Poverello, although there have been claims stating that there indeed was a troublesome wolf in Gubbio around the time St. Francis was still active. But while it has been said the saint had passed through the place in one of his journeys, it could not be effectively proven whether he has actually encountered the wolf. Another example is the story of St. George and the dragon, which is also a well- known one among Christians in Europe. It has been said that the dragon is merely a representation of Satan or some evil entity. But then this book is not written as a historical tome - it's a collection of delightful legends about some of the beloved and admired European saints in the Catholic Church designed to entertain and morally educate young Christian readers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Saints and Friendly Beasts In the old legends there may be things which some folk nowadays find it hard to believe. But surely the theme of each is true. It is not hard to see how gentle bodies who had no other friends should make comrades of the little folk in fur and fins and feathers. For, as St. Francis knew so well, all the creatures are our little brothers, ready to meet halfway those who will but try to understand. And this is a truth which every one to-day, even tho' he be no Saint, is waking up to learn. The happenings are set down quite as they read in the old books. Veritable histories, like those of St. Francis and St. Cuthbert, ask no addition of color to make them real. But sometimes, when a mere line of legend remained to hint of some dear Saint's relation with his friendly Beast, the story has been filled out in the way that seemed most likely to be true. For so alone could the old tale be made alive again. So all one's best is dressing old words new. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Original Sinners There has been some discussion lately about "The Fall of Man," and English ecclesiastics, appealing to higher authorities than the mere sciences of geology, morphology, biology, zoology, and the history of mankind, have confidently maintained the truth and value of that theological hypothesis. It is very natural. I suppose that every mythology, whether Hebrew, Greek, Roman, German, Celtic, or Norse, has imagined a distant age of innocence and happiness to which those races looked back with a regretful yearning, such as many middle-aged people feel in looking back upon a childhood fondly pictured as innocent and happy. Every one knows how rapidly the past becomes idealised - how rapidly the black shadows of bodily pain, grief, fear, and anxiety fade from the picture that we recall. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Saints, Vol. 2: With a Practical Instruction on the Life of Each Saint, for Every Day in Year Come to his assistance, ye Saints of God, come forth to meet him, ye Angels of the Lord, receiving his soul, offer it to the Most High, he calmly closed his eyes and gave up his soul, filled with so many merits, into the hand of God, in the-year 1221, the soth of his age. He left to posterity, not only the holy Order which he founded, but the most noble example of virtue. His heart was filled with the love of God; hence he endeavored most assiduously to prevent others from offending the Divine Majesty and to move Sinners to repentance. Frequently he passed the whole night in prayer and in chastising his body, of fering it to God for the conversion of Sinners, saying that he would willingly give every drop of his blood, if by it he were able to prevent a Single sin, or to convert a Sinner. It was his wish to suffer and to give his life for the love of Christ. Humil ity made him three times refuse a bishopric. He desired noth ing but to work for the salvation of souls, to suffer and be de Spised. Towards himself he was extremely severe; he con stantly wore a rough hair-shirt, fastened around the loins with an iron chain, drawn so tightly, that it cut into the flesh. The steps of the altar or the bare boards were his bed. He scourged himself three times each night, first for his own' sins; secondly for the Sins of other men; and thirdly, for the souls in purgai tory. His life was, besides, a continual fast. He never tasted meat; To live on alms and to aid the poor was all he desired. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
