Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legendary Fictions of the Irish Celts Though the subject of this volume seems light and frivolous enough, it might be preceded, and accompanied, and concluded by grave and tiresome dissertations; and if our hopes were limited to its perusal by readers of an archaeological turn, we would freely exhaust all the philosophy of fiction in our possession upon them. But from our early youth we have felt the deepest interest in the stories and legends which are peculiar to the Irish, or which they possess in common with all the Indo-European races, and our dearest wish is that their memory should not fade from the minds of the people. They have existed in one form or other from long before the Christian era, and have been mainly preserved by oral tradition among the unlettered. Taking into consideration the diminishing of our population by want and emigration, and the general diffusion of book-learning, such as it is, and the growing taste for the rubbishy tales of the penny and halfpenny journals, we have in these latter times been haunted with the horrid thought that the memory of the tales heard in boyhood would be irrecoverably lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legendary Heroes of Ireland The early Celts have little literature other than these stories, which have been handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. Most of the tales in this book have been taken from the Ossianic Saga. Whether Finn belongs to history or mythology detracts no jot from the absorbing inter est Of his exploits. I have tried to make the story of Finn something of a connected narrative. To do this I have taken incidents from various versions; I have left out much unsuitable to children, and I have changed some inci dents to conform to the modern standards Of morals. The chronology of arrangement is my own, but I have tried to preserve the spirit of the originals. No collection Of Irish folk stories could be brought out were it not for the work Of those many scholars who have spent years in collecting and translating the tales of the Celtic race. To our American lin guist, Jeremiah Curtin, and to the Irish scholars Sir Douglas Hyde, Dr. Joyce, Eleanor Hull, Lady Gregory, T. W. Rolleston and others, my thanks are due. Their Splendid research work has made pos sible such a volume as this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Celts: A Cyclopedia of Race History, Containing Biographical Sketches of More Than Fifteen Hundred Distinguished Irish Celts, With a Chronological Index The records of most people are embraced within a national aspect, and they have affected the worlds history and their own destiny mainly in their aggregate capacity; but the history of this race, the lives of a few of whose children this work records, is an exception. It is in the lives of her children, scattered throughout the entire earth either by zeal or necessity, for a thousand years, more, perhaps, than in the history of its island home, that we must seek the glory and the achievements of a gallant race; the most maligned, misunderstood and robbed, as to credit and character, of any $at history records. It has not only been the misfortune or destiny of this race to be robbed in every conceivable way and then slandered and oppressed by the robber at home, and this resulting not from any want of valor, ability or manly spirit to defend their own, but only circumvented by treachery, deceit, perjury and fraud; but when away from home, carving out by unequaled valor and matchless ability, a new destiny, and creating new nations, still robbed as a race, of the credit and name of the work of their hands. You have lost America by the Irish, rang out from the lips of a British Statesman in the Imperial Parliament, as a warning to the Government of the results of its Irish policy about the time that glorious achievement was accomplished; and is it not a glaring fact, to-day, -that there is not a colony of Great Britain, of any importance, that its Irish Celts might not proclaim independent it unitedly they willed it; and even in England herself, the descendants of the Irish Celt are numerous enough to shake the foundations of its Government to their centre, if circumstances called forth such an effort? Few Americans seem to know how true was that declaration quoted above, as to the loss of America through the Irish. It is true that the historians of the Revolution do not proclaim that fact out loud, but an examination of the records of the arm! fully sustains it, and we have the unimpeachable testimony of Joseph Galloway, of Pennsylvania, before a committee of the Imperial Parliament, during the progress of the war (1780) to the same effect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends and Stories Ireland Though the sources whence these stories are derived are open to every one, yet chance or choice may prevent thousands from making such sources available; and though the village crone and mountain guide have many hearers, still their circle is so circumscribed, that most of what I have ventured to lay before my readers, is, for the first time, made tangible to the greater portion of those who do me the favour to become such. In one story alone - "Paddy the Piper" - I have no claim to authorship, and this I take the earliest opportunity of declaring, and as I have entered upon my confessions, it is, perhaps, equally fair to state that although most of the tales are authentic, there is one purely my invention, namely, "The Gridiron." Book excerpt: The origins of the vampire can be traced through oral traditions, ancient texts and archaeological discoveries, its nature varying from one culture to the next up until the 20th century. Three 19th century Irish writers--Charles Robert Maturin, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and Bram Stoker--used the obscure vampire of folklore in their fiction and developed a universally recognizable figure, culminating in Stoker's Dracula and the vampire of today's popular culture. Maturin, Le Fanu and Stoker did not set out to transform the vampire of regional folk tales into a global phenomenon. Their personal lives, national concerns and extensive reading were reflected in their writing, striking a chord with readers and recasting the vampire as distinctly Irish. This study traces the genealogy of the modern literary vampire from European mythology through the Irish literature of the 1800s.
