Book Synopsis Contemporary Legend by : Gillian Bennett
Download or read book Contemporary Legend written by Gillian Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996. For most of the time since the Grimm brothers first contrasted the fairy tale (Märchen) and the legend (Sage), the former has enjoyed the greater reputation among folklorists. Only in recent years, and with the work of such scholars as Gillian Bennett and Paul Smith, has it been recognized that—both as art and as news—the legend is now central to contemporary culture in a way that the Märchen no longer is. The present book is the first collection of essays on legend to appear in English since 1971. Nevertheless, its publication consolidates a gradual shift which has taken place over the last two decades, in which English-language scholarship has taken the lead in the study of certain kinds of legends—variously dubbed modern horror legends, urban legends, urban myths or, here, contemporary legends.

Download or read book Kraftwerk written by Tim Barr and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of modern music began in Dusseldorf in 1970, when an avant-garde German band, the Organisation re-invented themselves as Kraftwerk and set in motion a train of events which introduced a whole new language into popular culture. By pre-dating electro, house, ambient and techno by more than two decades, they are quite simply the most influentual band of the late 20th century. Having studied composi-tional theory at the Dusseldorf Conservatory, they have more in common with Stockhausen and Russian Constructivism than Chuck Berry and Andy Warhol and yet, in creating classic pop hits like 'Autobahn', 'Trans Europe Express', 'The Model' and 'Tour de France' Kraftwork created a mass-market blueprint. The list of those directly and profoundly influenced is staggering: Bowie & Iggy Pop; Human League; disco (Giorgio Moroder`s seminal work with Donna Summer); Gary Numan: Sparks; Simple Minds; Orbital; Underworld; in fact, ALL modern Dance music. As well as telling the tale of this famously enigmatic and reclusive group, Tim Barr will also speak to the full range of musicians who have been touched by Kraftwerk`s extraordinary influence.
Book Synopsis Independence Day by : M. B. B. Biskupski
Download or read book Independence Day written by M. B. B. Biskupski and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 11th of November 1918, Polish Independence Day, is a curious anniversary whose commemoration has been only intermittently observed in the last century. In fact, the day — and the several symbols that rightly or wrongly have become associated with it — has a rather convoluted history, filled with tradition and myth, which deserves attention. Independence Day is more than just the history of a day, or the evolution of its celebration, but an explanation of what meaning has come to be associated with that date. It offers a re-reading of Polish history, not by a series of dates, but through a series of symbols whose combination allows the Poles to understand who they are by what they have been. Its focus is on the era 1914-2008, and the central actor is the charismatic Jozef Pilsudski. He came to represent a disposition regarding the meaning of Polish history which eventually penetrated virtually all of modern Polish society. The work is constructed by the analysis of memoirs, documents, coins, stamps, films, maps, monuments, and many other features making it a multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional volume.

This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart-pounding story of an unlikely band of ragtags who took on Hitler's Grand Prix driver. In the years before World War II, Adolf Hitler wanted to prove the greatness of the Third Reich in everything from track and field to motorsports. The Nazis poured money into the development of new race cars, and Mercedes-Benz came out with a stable of supercharged automobiles called Silver Arrows. Their drivers dominated the sensational world of European Grand Prix racing and saluted Hitler on their many returns home with victory. As the Third Reich stripped Jews of their rights and began their march toward war, one driver, Rene Dreyfus, a 32-year-old Frenchman of Jewish heritage who had enjoyed some early successes on the racing circuit, was barred from driving on any German or Italian race teams, which fielded the best in class, due to the rise of Hitler and Benito Mussolini. So it was that in 1937, Lucy Schell, an American heiress and top Monte Carlo Rally driver, needed a racer for a new team she was creating to take on Germany's Silver Arrows. Sensing untapped potential in Dreyfus, she funded the development of a nimble tiger of a new car built by a little-known French manufacturer called Delahaye. As the nations of Europe marched ever closer to war, Schell and Dreyfus faced down Hitler's top drivers, and the world held its breath in anticipation, waiting to see who would triumph.
