Book Synopsis Contemporary Legend by : Gillian Bennett
Download or read book Contemporary Legend written by Gillian Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996. For most of the time since the Grimm brothers first contrasted the fairy tale (Märchen) and the legend (Sage), the former has enjoyed the greater reputation among folklorists. Only in recent years, and with the work of such scholars as Gillian Bennett and Paul Smith, has it been recognized that—both as art and as news—the legend is now central to contemporary culture in a way that the Märchen no longer is. The present book is the first collection of essays on legend to appear in English since 1971. Nevertheless, its publication consolidates a gradual shift which has taken place over the last two decades, in which English-language scholarship has taken the lead in the study of certain kinds of legends—variously dubbed modern horror legends, urban legends, urban myths or, here, contemporary legends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avant-garde poet and popular culture icon, Allen Ginsberg has been one of the world's most important writers for over 40 years. This comprehensive bibliography, covering the years 1941 to 1994, was prepared with the cooperation of the poet himself. All books, periodicals, photographs, recordings, films, and miscellaneous appearances are listed here. Entries are grouped in chapters according to type of work, and each entry provides full descriptive bibliographic information. Allen Ginsberg is perhaps the most famous poet of our time, as well as one of our most prolific writers. His subjects range from Buddhist studies to drug research to gay rights to political issues of every description from Vietnam to censorship. Ginsberg gave the author access to personal files and, as a result, every appearance of Ginsberg's writings in the English language is noted. This bibliography is a comprehensive, descriptive record of all of Ginsberg's works. The volume contains descriptive annotations of every book, pamphlet, and broadside by Ginsberg. It also contains complete descriptions of every contribution by Ginsberg to the works of others. In addition, all periodical contributions, recordings, films, and miscellaneous publications are listed. Due to Ginsberg's recent acceptance as a photographer of note, a special section identifies all of his published photographs. Entries are arranged in chapters according to the type of work, to facilitate ease of use. As a result, this book presents a history of Ginsberg's works and traces the evolution of his writings over a period of publications and revisions.

Download or read book Return to Uluru written by Mark McKenna and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A killing. A hidden history. A story that goes to the heart of the nation. When Mark McKenna set out to write a history of the centre of Australia, he had no idea what he would discover. One event in 1934 – the shooting at Uluru of Aboriginal man Yokunnuna by white policeman Bill McKinnon, and subsequent Commonwealth inquiry – stood out as a mirror of racial politics in the Northern Territory at the time. But then, through speaking with the families of both killer and victim, McKenna unearthed new evidence that transformed the historical record and the meaning of the event for today. As he explains, ‘Every thread of the story connected to the present in surprising ways.’ In a sequence of powerful revelations, McKenna explores what truth-telling and reconciliation look like in practice. Return to Uluru brings a cold case to life. It speaks directly to the Black Lives Matter movement, but is completely Australian. Recalling Chloe Hooper’s The Tall Man, it is superbly written, moving, and full of astonishing, unexpected twists. Ultimately it is a story of recognition and return, which goes to the very heart of the country. At the centre of it all is Uluru, the sacred site where paths fatefully converged. ‘Mark McKenna has exposed the wounded heart of Australia. Never has a history of our country so assumed the power of sacred myth. Return to Uluru is a spellbinding story of death and resurrection that is Australian to its core.’ —James Boyce ‘Mark McKenna sets the highest standard for truth-telling of the kind that Australians so urgently need if they are to live in this country with honour. I feel sure that this book will become an Australian classic, not the first of its kind, but certainly the most powerful narrative I have read of frontier injustice and its resonance in our lives today.’ —Marcia Langton
