Book Synopsis The Legendary Douglas DC-3 by : Michael S. Prophet
Download or read book The Legendary Douglas DC-3 written by Michael S. Prophet and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from the epoch-making DC-2 technology, the DC-3 is generally considered the greatest single commercial transport plane in history, and certainly the most famous. Indeed, the DC-3 revolutionized air travel to an extent not equaled until the arrival of the jet age. Many of these revolutions related to safety; thanks to the DC-3’s reputation for reliability, in 1937 air travel insurance finally became available to the general public. This is the airliner that not only made flying respectable but enabled the emerging aviation industry to end its reliance on mail subsidies and profit from passenger journeys. DC-3 are still flying eight decades after their first debut, a tribute to their brilliant design, and are likely to continue flying well into the 21st century. '... een zeer kleurrijk boek. (...) Het boek is een prachtig eerbetoon en een mooie momentopname van wat er op dit moment op de wereld nog te zien is van dit ontwerp van voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog.' – De Vliegende Hollander

Book Synopsis Euphoria and Exhaustion by : Nikolaus Katzer
Download or read book Euphoria and Exhaustion written by Nikolaus Katzer and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The architects of the Soviet Union intended not merely to remake their society--they also had an ambitious plan to remake the citizenry physically, with the goal of perfecting the socialist ideal of man. As Euphoria and Exhaustionshows, the Soviet leadership used sport as one of the primary arenas in which to deploy and test their efforts to mechanize and perfect the human body, drawing on knowledge from physiology, biology, medicine, and hygiene. At the same time, however, such efforts, like any form of social control, could easily lead to discontent--and thus, the editors show, a study of changes in public attitude towards sport can offer insight into overall levels of integration, dissatisfaction, and social exhaustion in the Soviet Union.

Download or read book Jeeps 1941–45 written by Steven J. Zaloga and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The jeep was the most famous military vehicle of World War II, and its name has become synonymous with a whole class of military and civilian all-terrain vehicles. The jeep originated in a prewar US Army requirement for a simple, inexpensive, and robust vehicle for basic utility chores. Its simple design proved to be adaptable to a host of military tasks including use as a scout vehicle, battlefield ambulance, communications vehicle, and staff car. This book, covering “the savior of World War II”, focuses on the design and development of this versatile vehicle used on nearly every front of World War II.
Book Synopsis The House on Lemon Street by : Mark Rawitsch
Download or read book The House on Lemon Street written by Mark Rawitsch and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2012-06-15 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1915, Jukichi and Ken Harada purchased a house on Lemon Street in Riverside, California. Close to their restaurant, church, and children's school, the house should have been a safe and healthy family home. Before the purchase, white neighbors objected because of the Haradas' Japanese ancestry, and the California Alien Land Law denied them real-estate ownership because they were not citizens. To bypass the law Mr. Harada bought the house in the names of his three youngest children, who were American-born citizens. Neighbors protested again, and the first Japanese American court test of the California Alien Land Law of 1913-The People of California v. Jukichi Harada-was the result. Bringing this little-known story to light, The House on Lemon Street details the Haradas' decision to fight for the American dream. Chronicling their experiences from their immigration to the United States through their legal battle over their home, their incarceration during World War II, and their lives after the war, this book tells the story of the family's participation in the struggle for human and civil rights, social justice, property and legal rights, and fair treatment of immigrants in the United States. The Harada family's quest for acceptance illuminates the deep underpinnings of anti-Asian animus, which set the stage for Executive Order 9066, and recognizes fundamental elements of our nation's anti-immigrant history that continue to shape the American story. It will be worthwhile for anyone interested in the Japanese American experience in the twentieth century, immigration history, public history, and law. This publication was made possible with the support of Naomi, Kathleen, Ken, and Paul Harada, who donated funds in memory of their father, Harold Shigetaka Harada, honoring his quest for justice and civil rights. Additional support for this publication was also provided, in part, by UCLA's Aratani Endowed Chair as well as Wallace T. Kido, Joel B. Klein, Elizabeth A. Uno, and Rosalind K. Uno.
Book Synopsis World War II German Battle Insignia by : Gordon Williamson
Download or read book World War II German Battle Insignia written by Gordon Williamson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable war effort of the German armed forces on three fronts between 1939 and 1945 was recognised by a wider range of insignia than seen in the Allied armies. While the Wehrmacht displayed fewer unit insignia than the Allies, a glance at a German soldier's tunic could reveal much more about his actual combat experience. In this book an experienced researcher explains and illustrates the Battle and Assault Badges of the Army, Waffen-SS and Luftwaffe ground troops; the sleeve shields and cuffbands issued to mark service in particular campaigns; wound badges, commemorative medals, and other types of insignia.
