Book excerpt: How the West's greatest spy in Asia tried to stop the new American way of war—and the steep price he paid for failing Jim Thompson landed in Thailand at the end of World War II, a former American society dilettante who became an Asian legend as a spy and silk magnate with access to Thai worlds outsiders never saw. As the Cold War reached Thailand, America had a choice: Should it, as Thompson believed, help other nations build democracies from their traditional cultures or, as his ex-OSS friend Willis Bird argued, remake the world through deception and self-serving alliances? In a story rich with insights and intrigue, this book explores a key Cold War episode that is still playing out today. Highlights a pivotal moment in Cold War history that set a course for American foreign policy that is still being followed today Explores the dynamics that put Thailand at the center of the Cold War and the fighting in neighboring Laos that escalated from sideshow to the largest covert operation America had ever engaged in Draws on personal recollections and includes atmospheric details that bring the people, events—and the Thailand of the time—to life Written by a journalist with extensive experience in Asian affairs who has spent years investigating every aspect of this story, including Thompson's tragic disappearance

Book Synopsis Africa's Football Legends by : Okyere Bonna Mba
Download or read book Africa's Football Legends written by Okyere Bonna Mba and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-09-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of African talent in European Football. In fact, a definitive list of the continent´s finest players in England´s top flight alone, for example, is extremely difficult to compile. Considering that talents such as Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Kolo Toure, Benni McCarthy, El-Hadji Diouf and Yakubu are all regularly on display week-in, week-out, African football fans have a multitude of riches to admire. Notwithstanding, Africa’s main concern must be towards capturing the coveted FIFA World Cup. THE BIG QUESTION IS: If Africa were that good in football why are they not showing it at the FIFA World Cup? So far no African team (country) has gone beyond the FIFA World Cup quarter final. Ghana and Cameroon have shown class at one time and once made it to the 8th stage though. Senegal and Nigeria have also once made it past the first 16th stage. No doubt, Africa has the football talents; let’s pray and hope her officials live up to the challenge in shaping their national team’s spirit to tangible results. Just getting to the 16th stage is not good enough for the euphoria. Africa can do better than merely showing up. I predict a great showing in South Africa 2010, at least to 8th stage, (the semi-finals) and winning in Brazil in 2014. The question then is: Which African country is ready to meet this challenge? The truth of the matter is any of the African teams is capable. This book looks at the history of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and goes on to feature Africa’s great footballers Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.
Book Synopsis The Roar of the Lion by : Richard Toye
Download or read book The Roar of the Lion written by Richard Toye and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 1812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ''My aunt, listening to the Prime Minister's speech, remarked of "our greatest orator", "He's no speaker, is he?"' -diary of teacher M.A. Pratt, 11 Nov. 1942. The popular story of Churchill's war-time rhetoric is a simple one: the British people were energized and inspired by his speeches, which were almost universally admired and played an important role in the ultimate victory over Nazi Germany. Richard Toye now re-examines this accepted national story - and gives it a radical new spin. Using survey evidence and the diaries of ordinary people, he shows how reactions to Churchill's speeches at the time were often very different from what we have always been led to expect. His first speeches as Prime Minister in the dark days of 1940 were by no means universally acclaimed - indeed, many people thought that he was drunk during his famous 'finest hour' broadcast - and there is little evidence that they made a decisive difference to the British people's will to fight on. In actual fact, as Toye shows, mass enthusiasm sat side-by-side with considerable criticism and dissent from ordinary people. Yes, there were speeches that stimulated, invigorated, and excited many. But there were also speeches which caused depression and disappointment in many others, and which sometimes led to workplace or family arguments. Yet this more complex reality has been consistently obscured from the historical record by the overwhelming power of a treasured national myth. The first systematic, archive based examination of Churchill's World War II rhetoric as a whole, The Roar of the Lion considers his oratory not merely as a series of 'great speeches', but as calculated political interventions which had diplomatic repercussions far beyond the effect on the morale of listeners in Britain. Considering his failures as well as his successes, the book moves beyond the purely celebratory tone of much of the existing literature. It offers new insight into how the speeches were written and delivered - and shows how Churchill's words were received at home, amongst allies and neutrals, and within enemy and occupied countries. This is the essential book on Churchill's war-time speeches. It presents us with a dramatically new take on the politics of the 1940s - one that will change the way we think about Churchill's oratory forever.
