Book Synopsis Man of the Century by : John Ramsden
Download or read book Man of the Century written by John Ramsden and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man of the Century is the often surprising story of how Winston Churchill, in the last years of his life, carefully crafted his reputation for posterity, revealing him to be perhaps the twentieth century's first, and most gifted, "spin doctor." Ramsden draws on fresh material and extensive research on three continents to argue that the statesman's force of personality and romantic, imperial notion of Britain has contributed directly to many of the political debates of the last decades--including American involvement in Vietnam and the role of the Anglo-American alliance in promoting and protecting a certain vision of world order.

Book Synopsis Perfect Heroes by : Judith Tydor Baumel-Schwartz
Download or read book Perfect Heroes written by Judith Tydor Baumel-Schwartz and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, the British military dropped several dozen parachutists from Palestine, including three women, behind enemy lines in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. These young soldiers, most of whom had fled Europe only a few years earlier, faced a double challenge: their British mission was to find pilots who had jettisoned over enemy territory and assist them in returning to Allied-occupied lands; their Zionist mission was to contact Jewish communities, assist them in rebuilding the local Zionist movement, and, when necessary, help their members escape from the Nazis. Seven of the parachutists lost their lives in this effort. In Perfect Heroes, an expanded and updated English adaptation of her Hebrew book Giborim le-mofet, Judith Tydor Baumel-Schwartz recounts the history of these parachutists' wartime escapades and also analyzes the ways that various segments of Israeli society—military, political, legal, educational, youth, literary, and artistic—used the parachutists' story over the course of fifty years to build a nationalist narrative and to promote their own partisan and, at times, contradictory agendas. Baumel-Schwartz also offers broader comparative discussions of how individuals were commemorated as WWII heroes and heroines in many countries, in service of national mythologizing and collective memory.

Book Synopsis Essays on Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged by : Robert Mayhew
Download or read book Essays on Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged written by Robert Mayhew and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009-04-16 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the fiction of novelist-philosopher Ayn Rand is extremely popular and enduring, little has been written on it so far. This book consists of essays, most of which are new, by top Rand scholars on Atlas Shrugged, her magnum opus. The essays deal with historical, literary, and philosophical topics, surpassing related writings in breadth and depth of analysis. The historical essays cover the writing of Atlas Shrugged, its publication history, and its reception. The literary essays cover analysis of the novel's plot, theme, and characterization; comparisons with other works, such as the novels of Hugo, Dostoyevsky, and Joyce; and the proper approach to adapting Atlas Shrugged to film. The philosophical essays cover a vast range of topics, including the place of Galt's speech in the novel, the role of the mind in human life, and the evil of non-objective law. Some of the essays make use of previously unpublished material from the Ayn Rand Archives.

Book Synopsis The Business Legends of India by : Arjun Sampat
Download or read book The Business Legends of India written by Arjun Sampat and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian economy and business landscape have undergone a sea change since Independence in 1947, with the country’s socialist policies and the License Raj giving way to economic liberalization. The IT and ITeS revolution made India the back office of the world. The rapid spread of the Internet and the world’s lowest data costs have made India a hub for fintech innovation. The development of the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) has resulted in the explosion of e-commerce. As we celebrate the growth of entrepreneurship and the start-up culture in India, some questions come to mind: • Who were the trailblazing Indian entrepreneurs who made India’s growth story possible? What were their characteristics? • What were the strategies they used to succeed? • Who are today’s business leaders and how are they driving growth in today’s volatile world? This book seeks to answer these questions. “An inspiring summary of the lives of some of India’s business stalwarts and new-age entrepreneurs by a young and curious mind. Arjun Sampat lucidly captures the key strategies and success factors of these entrepreneurs. I’m sure this book will further encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship amongst young Indians.” -Sonal Agrawal, Global Chair, AltoPartners and Managing Partner - India, Accord Group “India’s entrepreneurs are world-class global traders – interacting with them is the main reason I love my job as an investor!! For a young man like Arjun Sampat to author such a terrific, detailed book, at such a young age, is a testament to the impression these leaders have made in the minds of our youth. I am sure this will catalyse and inspire many young Indians to undertake their own entrepreneurial journeys.” -Manish Kejriwal, Founder & Managing Partner, Kedaara Capital

Book Synopsis Legends of the Sibilline Mountains by : Giuseppe Santarelli
Download or read book Legends of the Sibilline Mountains written by Giuseppe Santarelli and published by STAF edizioni. This book was released on 2006 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Legends of the Sibilline Mountains" is a small book about an obscure corner of Italy and an equally obscure backwater of world literature. And yet the subjects it touches upon--amongst them, the roots of literature in popular consciousness, the intimations of Christian existentialism, the absorption of pagan traditions into Christianity--reach far and wide. Goddess worship, necromantic rites, the death of Pontius Pilate, Benevenuto Cellini, Goethe's "Faust," Wagner's "Tannhauser"...they all connect here in a real place of strange geological formations and magical beauty. The Sibilline Mountains, dividing Le Marche from Umbria, were "celebrated in the 14th and 15th centuries throughout all Europe for magical fairy tales and necromantic initiations," according to the author, Giuseppe Santarelli. In the most famous of these tales a mysterious Sibyl inhabits a grotto devoted to the pleasures of the flesh, luring knights to eternal damnation. Another legend concerns the Lago di Pilato, a mountaintop lake where Pontius Pilate's body had been cast that later became a destination for demonic rituals. In a witty and personal tone Santarelli, director of the Sanctuary of Loreto, discusses the origins of the myths in folklore, their literary transformations through the centuries, and the archeological traces they left behind.
