Book excerpt: Focusing on the lives and careers of Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Theodore Dreiser, Ernest Hemingway, and John Dos Passos, Fishkin offers the first full-length study to examine the tradition in American letters since the 1830s of great imaginative writers beginning their careers in journalism. Her probing examination of the poetry and fiction that followed the newspaper and magazine work of these writers reveals how each transformed fact into art and how journalismhas helped to give a distinctively American cast to American literature.

Book excerpt: "Michigan Sheriff Johannes Spreen went to jail today to defend his beliefs and actions saying 'I'd rather be right than free'." Walter Cronkite, CBS News, May 7, 1977. "I'm inspired by legendary police commissioner and former sheriff Johannes Spreen, whose community-partnership approach encouraged people to work together, and it was successful." Arizona Police Chief Dan Saban. "Johannes Spreen was a police officer extraordinary; a man who helped restructure and develop New York City Police Academy training leading to a college program, a 'West Point' for police officers-now John Jay College for Criminal Justice. Johannes Spreen is a man of enthusiasm, indeed a prophet; always ahead of his time." Rudolph P. Blaum, retired NYPD and co-developer of John Jay College courses. This intimate portrait of former Detroit Police Commissioner and Michigan Sheriff Johannes F. Spreen, forming his attitudes against the rugged tides of experience and events, is a delight to read. The revealing rise of a German immigrant through New York and Michigan police hierarchies adds to our understanding of policing, competitive police turf battles and the criminal forces that drive our nation to the brink in attempting to maintain freedom and peace. Spreen's innovations re-shaped American law enforcement thinking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated biography of the renowned Southern folk artist includes nearly 100 images, plus commentary from the artist herself. Exuberant colors, bold strokes, and everyday images of rural Southern life typify Clementine Hunter’s folk art. Born in Louisiana in 1887, Hunter spent most of her life working in cotton fields at Melrose Plantation. She only began painting in her fifties, and it was several more years before her talent was recognized. Nearly 100 images of Hunter’s art are presented in this extensive biography, drawn from the many public and private collections of her work. Several paintings are accompanied by Hunter’s own commentary on a variety of subjects, including marriage, baptism, money, and death. François Mignon, her close friend and the librarian of Melrose, was instrumental in the promotion of Hunter’s paintings. Excerpts of his letters to James Register, an art collector and dealer who specialized in Hunter’s works, chronicle her growth and development as a major contemporary artist.

Kentucky's UFO incidents--like Thomas Mantell's mysterious plane crash, the Hopkinsville alien attack and the Paintsville train-UFO crash--are as puzzling and frightening now as they were when they happened. Download or read book The Legendary Casey Brothers written by Jim Hudson and published by Gill & Macmillan Ltd. This book was released on 2013-09-15 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere in the annals of sport is there a family so gifted. In 1982 the seven Casey brothers were inducted into the Irish Sports Hall of Fame, the only family ever to receive that honour. The brothers, from Sneem in County Kerry, starred as Olympic-class oarsmen, Tug-O'-War champions, professional wrestlers and boxers and won fame throughout the sporting world. Steve, known as 'Crusher' Casey, became the supreme wrestler in the world and for a decade no one could match him. When he turned to boxing, the great Joe Louis refused to go into the ring with him. In 1983 at a family reunion in Sneem, five brothers, all in their seventies, climbed into the four-oar boat they used to win championships in the 1930s. Although they had not rowed together in fifty years, they still moved with natural unity and grace. Sports people from Kerry have achieved fame in many fields but the success of the Caseys surely outshines all.

Download or read book Stranger Danger written by Paul M. Renfro and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with Etan Patz's disappearance in Manhattan in 1979, a spate of high-profile cases of missing and murdered children stoked anxieties about the threats of child kidnapping and exploitation. Publicized through an emerging twenty-four-hour news cycle, these cases supplied evidence of what some commentators dubbed "a national epidemic" of child abductions committed by "strangers." In this book, Paul M. Renfro narrates how the bereaved parents of missing and slain children turned their grief into a mass movement and, alongside journalists and policymakers from both major political parties, propelled a moral panic. Leveraging larger cultural fears concerning familial and national decline, these child safety crusaders warned Americans of a supposedly widespread and worsening child kidnapping threat, erroneously claiming that as many as fifty thousand American children fell victim to stranger abductions annually. The actual figure was (and remains) between one hundred and three hundred, and kidnappings perpetrated by family members and acquaintances occur far more frequently. Yet such exaggerated statistics-and the emotionally resonant images and narratives deployed behind them-led to the creation of new legal and cultural instruments designed to keep children safe and to punish the "strangers" who ostensibly wished them harm. Ranging from extensive child fingerprinting drives to the milk carton campaign, from the AMBER Alerts that periodically rattle Americans' smart phones to the nation's sprawling system of sex offender registration, these instruments have widened the reach of the carceral state and intensified surveillance practices focused on children. Stranger Danger reveals the transformative power of this moral panic on American politics and culture, showing how ideas and images of endangered childhood helped build a more punitive American state.
