The author has not intended to write a treatise or a manual; he has aimed rather to reproduce his university lectures with necessary modifications, hoping that the freedom in the choice of subjects and in the manner of presentation allowable in a lecture room may prove helpful and stimulating to a larger audience. A distinctive feature of these Lectures is an attempt to develop the theory of functions with reference to a general domain of definition. The first functions to be considered were simple combinations of the elementary functions. Riemann in his great paper of 1854, "Ueber die Darstellbarkeit einer Function durch eine trigonometrische Reihe," was the first to consider seriously functions whose singularities ceased to be intuitional. The researches of later mathematicians have brought to light a collection of such functions, whose existence so long unsuspected has revolutionized the older notion of a function and made imperative the creation of finer tools of research. But while minute attention was paid to the singular character of these functions, practically none was accorded to the domain over which a function may be defined. After the epoch-making discoveries inaugurated in 1874 by G. Cantor in the theory of point sets, it was no longer necessary to consider a function of one variable as defined in an interval, a function of two variables as defined over a field bounded by one or more simple curves, etc. The first to make use of this new freedom was C. Jordan in his classic paper of 1892. He has had, however, but few imitators. In the present Lectures the author has endeavored to develop this broader view of Jordan, persuaded that in so doing he is merely carrying a step farther the ideas of Dirichlet and Riemann. It falls in two volumes, and the following remarks apply only to the first. The student of mathematics, on entering the graduate school of American universities, often has no inconsiderable knowledge of the methods and processes of the calculus. He knows how to differentiate and integrate complicated expressions, to evaluate indeterminate forms, to find maxima and minima, to differentiate a definite integral with respect to a parameter, etc. But no em phasis has been placed on the conditions under which these pro cesses are valid. Great is his surprise to learn that they do not always lead to correct results. Numerous simple examples, how ever, readily convince him that such is nevertheless the case. The problem therefore arises to examine more carefully the conditions under which the theorems and processes of the calculus are correct, and to extend as far as possible or useful the limits of their applicability. In doing this it soon becomes manifest that the style of reason ing which the student has heretofore employed must be abandoned. Examples of curves without tangents, of curves completely filling areas, and other strange configurations so familiar to the analyst of to-day, make it clear that the rough and ready reasoning which rests on geometric intuition must give way to a finer and more delicate analysis. The invitation was accompanied by a stipulation that the lectures should be published. As regards choice of subject for the course, I was allowed complete freedom. It was intimated that the class would be mainly or entirely of a post-graduate standing. What was desired, above all, was an exposition of some subject that, later on, might suggest openings to those who had the will and the skill to pursue research. Accordingly I selected a subject, which may be regarded as being still in not very advanced stages of development, and into the exposition of which I could incorporate some results of my own which had been in my possession for some time. Owing to the limitations of the period over which the course should extend, it was not practicable to make the lectures a systematic discussion of the whole subject; and I therefore had to choose portions, in order to discuss a variety of topics and to indicate some paths along which further progress might be possible.
