Book Synopsis Bremen and Freiburg Lectures by : Martin Heidegger
Download or read book Bremen and Freiburg Lectures written by Martin Heidegger and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-02 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents two important lecture cycles delivered after WWII, exploring the poetry of Hölderlin and the nature of thought itself. Heidegger delivered his lecture series, Insight into That Which Is, at Bremen in 1949. It was his first speaking engagement after World War II, when he was officially banned from teaching. Here, Heidegger openly resumes thinking that deeply engaged him with Hölderlin’s poetry and themes developed in his earlier works. In the Freiburg lectures, delivered in 1957, Heidegger ponders thought itself and freely engages with the German idealists and Greek thinkers who had provoked him in the past. Andrew J. Mitchell’s translation allows English-speaking readers to explore important connections with Heidegger’s earlier works on language, logic, and reality.

Book Synopsis Lectures on the History of Moral and Political Philosophy by : Jonathan Wolff
Download or read book Lectures on the History of Moral and Political Philosophy written by Jonathan Wolff and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-27 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previously unpublished writings from one of the most important political philosophers of recent times G. A. Cohen was one of the leading political philosophers of recent times. He first came to wide attention in 1978 with the prize-winning book Karl Marx's Theory of History: A Defence. In subsequent decades his published writings largely turned away from the history of philosophy, focusing instead on equality, freedom, and justice. However, throughout his career he regularly lectured on a wide range of moral and political philosophers of the past. This volume collects these previously unpublished lectures. Starting with a chapter centered on Plato, but also discussing the pre-Socratics as well as Aristotle, the book moves to social contract theory as discussed by Hobbes, Locke, and Hume, and then continues with chapters on Kant, Hegel, and Nietzsche. The book also contains some previously published but uncollected papers on Marx, Hobbes, and Kant, among other figures. The collection concludes with a memoir of Cohen written by the volume editor, Jonathan Wolff, who was a student of Cohen's. A hallmark of the lectures is Cohen's engagement with the thinkers he discusses. Rather than simply trying to render their thought accessible to the modern reader, he tests whether their arguments and positions are clear, sound, and free from contradiction. Throughout, he homes in on central issues and provides fresh approaches to the philosophers he examines. Ultimately, these lectures teach us not only about some of the great thinkers in the history of moral and political philosophy, but also about one of the great thinkers of our time: Cohen himself.

Download or read book Making Up written by Graeme Harper and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not so many years ago, Making Up: Research in Creative Writing could not have existed. It could not have existed because at the time of its conception in the countries most influencing its birth – that is, in Britain and in Australia – even the mere notion of research through and in creative writing did not formally exist. Since the early 1990s, such research has grown, and it has developed strongly, worldwide. What we value in works of creative writing has long been the subject of discussion. We might value the diversion a work provides. We might feel personally engaged with a work of creative writing because it relates to an emotional state with which we are familiar or one about which we are newly curious. We might value the insights a work of creative writing provides – whether it is knowledge of our own emotional state, or knowledge about medicine, dancing or mechanical engineering, or whatever else. But research through and in creative writing is not only about the works this research produces, it is also, and often primarily, about the explorations a creative writer undertakes. To explore, through creative writing, ideas, a state of mind, concepts, personal or public ideals – research in and through creative writing, such as that seen here in Making Up: Research in Creative Writing, does this and more.

Book Synopsis Lionel Robbins on the Principles of Economic Analysis by : Lionel Robbins
Download or read book Lionel Robbins on the Principles of Economic Analysis written by Lionel Robbins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lionel Robbins (1898–1984) is best known to economists for his Essay on the Nature and Significance of Economic Science (1932 and 1935). To the wider public he is well known for the 'Robbins Report' of the 1960s on Higher Education, which recommended a major expansion of university education in Britain. However, throughout his academic career – at Oxford and the London School of Economics in the 1920s, and as Professor of Economics at the School from 1929 to 1961 – he was renowned as an exceptionally gifted teacher. Generations of students remember his lectures for their clarity and comprehensiveness and for his infectious enthusiasm for his subject. Besides his famous graduate seminar his most important and influential courses at LSE were the Principles of Economic Analysis, which he gave in the 1930s and again in the late 1940s and 1950s, as well as the History of Economic Thought, from 1953 until long after his official retirement. This book publishes for the first time the manuscript notes Robbins used for his lectures on the Principles of Economic Analysis from 1929/30 to 1934/40. At the outset of his career he took the advice of a senior colleague to prepare his lectures by writing them out fully before he presented them; the full notes for most of his pre-war lectures survive and are eminently decipherable. Since he made two major revisions of the lectures in the 1930s the Principles notes show both the development of his own thought and the way he incorporated the major theoretical innovations made by younger economists at LSE, such as John Hicks and Nicholas Kaldor, or elsewhere, notably Joan Robinson. He intended to turn his lecture notes into a book, abandoning the project only when he was asked to chair the Committee on Higher Education in 1960. This volume is not exactly the book he wanted to write, but it is a unique record of what was taught to senior undergraduate and graduate economists in those 'years of high theory'. It will be of interest to all economists interested in the development of economics in the twentieth century.
