Book Synopsis Bibliographia Cartesiana by : Gregor Sebba
Download or read book Bibliographia Cartesiana written by Gregor Sebba and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new type of working tool for Cartesian studies. It presents the literature of the last 160 years in alphabetical order (Part Two), combined with a systematic analytical survey (Part One) and a detailed topical index to the whole (Part Three). This organization makes it possible to turn bibliogra phy from a repository of references into a workshop of research. The system atic survey of Part One and the topical index of Part Three, together, offer a mise au point of Descartes studies over their full historical and topical range. The results have often been surprising and illuminating to the author, and if his experience is any guide, the reader, too, will begin to wonder about certain seemingly well-settled points, or marvel at the Protean shapes which our elusive philosopher assumes when mighty commentators force him to reveal his true nature. A work which has been in the making for fifteen years must show the traces of expansion in scope, and changes in evaluation. Bibliographia cartesiana amends my Descartes chapter in A Critical Bibliography of French Literature, v. 3, 1961 (see no. I9a), and supersedes an earlier version of Parts One and Two, published in 1959 under the main title Descartes and his Philosophy, v. 1 (set: no. I8a). Part I (Introduction to Descartes Studies) divides the field into eleven broad areas.
Book Synopsis The Aetiology of Deep Venous Thrombosis by : P. Colm Malone
Download or read book The Aetiology of Deep Venous Thrombosis written by P. Colm Malone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What we now call ‘deep venous thrombosis’ (DVT) has been elucidated by a diversity of investigative approaches during the past four centuries. The authors of this book survey the history of the field and ask: why has one of these perspectives – the haematological/biochemical – come to dominate research into the causation of DVT during the past 50 years and to exclude alternatives? In answering this question, the authors show that the current consensus model is conceptually flawed.
Book Synopsis A Short History of Cardiology by : Peter Fleming
Download or read book A Short History of Cardiology written by Peter Fleming and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story told in this book begins in about 1700, when the first attempts were made to study the diseased heart in life (the subject matter of cardiology), as distinct from its appearance after death; it ends, rather arbitrarily, in 1970. The account of the development of knowledge of heart disease is mainly chronological with emphasis on the fruitful consequences of the cross-fertilization of clinical practice with pathological anatomy at the beginning of the nineteenth century and with physiology at the end. In addition, shorter chapters deals with such topics as specific disease entities, methods of investigation, cardiac surgery and the work of two individuals - Peter Latham, an example of a physician practising with today's clinical skills but a very imperfect knowledge of the pathogenesis of heart disease and Etienne Marey, an early exponent of the clinical physiology which would, in time, throw light on that pathogenesis.
Book Synopsis Pain Management in Nursing Practice by : Shelagh Wright
Download or read book Pain Management in Nursing Practice written by Shelagh Wright and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain is a challenging area to understand for any healthcare professional, and quality training on the subject is required if nurses are to provide effective pain management and person-centred care. Based on the curriculum developed by the International Association for the Study of Pain, this book offers an essential guide to managing pain. Beginning with an examination of the biology of pain, it then goes on to consider pain management across the life course, looking at key topics including acute pain, cancer pain and pharmacology. Case scenarios are included throughout the book to help readers apply the knowledge they have learned to their own practice. This book is aimed primarily at meeting the learning needs of undergraduate nurses, and is essential reading for all healthcare professionals studying pain. The text will be helpful as a basic foundation for more advanced postgraduate courses in pain management in nursing practice.
Book Synopsis Brain, Vision, Memory by : Charles G. Gross
Download or read book Brain, Vision, Memory written by Charles G. Gross and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999-07-26 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these engaging tales describing the growth of knowledge about the brain—from the early Egyptians and Greeks to the Dark Ages and the Renaissance to the present time—Gross attempts to answer the question of how the discipline of neuroscience evolved into its modern incarnation through the twists and turns of history. Charles G. Gross is an experimental neuroscientist who specializes in brain mechanisms in vision. He is also fascinated by the history of his field. In these tales describing the growth of knowledge about the brain from the early Egyptians and Greeks to the present time, he attempts to answer the question of how the discipline of neuroscience evolved into its modern incarnation through the twists and turns of history. The first essay tells the story of the visual cortex, from the first written mention of the brain by the Egyptians, to the philosophical and physiological studies by the Greeks, to the Dark Ages and the Renaissance, and finally, to the modern work of Hubel and Wiesel. The second essay focuses on Leonardo da Vinci's beautiful anatomical work on the brain and the eye: was Leonardo drawing the body observed, the body remembered, the body read about, or his own dissections? The third essay derives from the question of whether there can be a solely theoretical biology or biologist; it highlights the work of Emanuel Swedenborg, the eighteenth-century Swedish mystic who was two hundred years ahead of his time. The fourth essay entails a mystery: how did the largely ignored brain structure called the "hippocampus minor" come to be, and why was it so important in the controversies that swirled about Darwin's theories? The final essay describes the discovery of the visual functions of the temporal and parietal lobes. The author traces both developments to nineteenth-century observations of the effect of temporal and parietal lesions in monkeys—observations that were forgotten and subsequently rediscovered.

Book Synopsis Psychosocial Processes and Health by : Andrew Steptoe
Download or read book Psychosocial Processes and Health written by Andrew Steptoe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-11-24 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the links between the social environment, emotion, behaviour and illness is a growing theme in medical and health education. The development of the field is reflected in the growth of disciplines such as health psychology, psychosocial epidemiology, and behavioural medicine. The basic literature is however awkwardly dispersed across medical and social science journals. This book makes available within a single volume some of the most important articles that have been published over the past thirty years. The thirty-one articles are grouped round six themes: life stress, social support and health; psychophysiological processes in disease; personality, behaviour patterns and health; health practices and the modification of health risk behaviour; coping with illness and disability; behavioural interventions in medicine. Each is prefaced by a state-of-the-art review of the theme by the editors. These readings will serve as a most valuable resource for psychology and health science teachers and students alike.
