Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Elementary Psychology of Feeling and Attention The eight lectures which make up this little book were read during my tenure of a nonresident lectureship in psychology at Columbia University, February, 1908. I have printed them as they were written for delivery, except that quotations from the French and German have, for accuracy's sake, been restored from English translation to their original form. I have not been able, either in the lectures themselves or in the appended notes, to take account of all that is important in the current psychology of feeling and attention. Indeed, my sins of omission are obvious. I can only say that they weigh heavily upon my scientific conscience, and that, were it not for other and imperative claims upon my time, I should have delayed publication until I had done what I could to correct them. Download or read book Lectures on the Experimental Psychology of the Thought-Processes written by Edward Bradford Titchener and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Experimental Psychology of the Thought-Processes In a course of lectures on the elementary psychology of Feeling and Attention, published last year, I remarked that "the system of psychology rests upon a threefold foundation: the doctrine of sensation and image, the elementary doctrine of feeling, and the doctrine of attention." This statement, which formed the basis of my whole discussion, was promptly challenged by reviewers. I was misled, they affirmed, by a sensationalistic bias; I should have taken account of current experimental work upon the thought-processes; I had no right to assume that all intellection is imaginal in character. I could not but acknowledge the essential justice of this criticism, although I could not either accept my critics' point of view. I was, indeed, engaged in writing a brief defence of psychological sensationalism, when I received an invitation to deliver a series of lectures at the University of Illinois. Here was an opportunity, of which I gladly availed myself, to treat in some little detail of the recent experimental contributions to the psychology of thought. The present volume is the result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Experimental Psychology of the Thought-Processes I have printed the lectures as they were written for delivery at the University of Illinois, in March, 1909. In the appended notes, I have allowed myself a freedom of reference and com ment somewhat wider than before. The presence of the notes at the end of the book need not disturb the general reader, while their f ulness may prevent certain minor misunderstandings to which the Feeling and Attention has been ex posed. I have, however, made it a rule to leave out of consideration all experimental work that is concerned simply with association and repro duction, and all purely theoretical studies of the thought-consciousness. Where the dividing line is at all obscure, I have, it is true, not hesitated to transgress. Still, the psychological reader will miss much that, without this limitation of purpose, he might reasonably expect to find. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Technologies have been shaping [our] emotional culture for more than a century, argue computer scientist Luke Fernandez and historian Susan Matt in this original study. Marshalling archival sources and interviews, they trace how norms (say, around loneliness) have shifted with technological change.” —Nature “A powerful story of how new forms of technology are continually integrated into the human experience...Anyone interested in seeing the digital age through a new perspective should be pleased with this rich account.” —Publishers Weekly Facebook makes us lonely. Selfies breed narcissism. On Twitter, hostility reigns. Pundits and psychologists warn that digital technologies substantially alter our emotional states, but in this lively look at our evolving feelings about technology since the advent of the telegraph, we learn that the gadgets we use don’t just affect how we feel—they can profoundly change our sense of self. When we say we’re bored, we don’t mean the same thing as a Victorian dandy. Could it be that political punditry has helped shape a new kind of anger? Luke Fernandez and Susan J. Matt take us back in time to consider how our feelings of loneliness, vanity, and anger have evolved in tandem with new technologies.
Download or read book 1879 and All that written by Mary Henle and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Henle's many years of research have earned her a loyal following and a reputation as an original and signiicant contributor to concepts of modern psychology. In her latest book she analyzes theories of psychology, rather than simply presenting them, and invites her readers -psychologists and students alike- to read these accepted ideas more closely and critically. 1879 and All That argues that psychologists should think more clearly about concepts, assumptions, and even words they use. Providing examples from Gestalt psychology, her own specialty, Henle addresses a number of themes, including: the need to recognize that labelling a problem is not the same as solving it; the need to analyze an author's assumptions in order to understand the author; and the need to consult primary sources instead of relying on secondary materials. The goal throughout is to take the student and psychologist beyond the passive reading of psychology history and theory, in which one simply learns what significant figures have said, and to start them on a much more adventurous and exciting path of analysis.
