Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to describe the rapid development in recent decades of sieve methods able to detect prime numbers. The subject began with Eratosthenes in antiquity, took on new shape with Legendre's form of the sieve, was substantially reworked by Ivan M. Vinogradov and Yuri V. Linnik, but came into its own with Robert C. Vaughan and important contributions from others, notably Roger Heath-Brown and Henryk Iwaniec. Prime-Detecting Sieves breaks new ground by bringing together several different types of problems that have been tackled with modern sieve methods and by discussing the ideas common to each, in particular the use of Type I and Type II information. No other book has undertaken such a systematic treatment of prime-detecting sieves. Among the many topics Glyn Harman covers are primes in short intervals, the greatest prime factor of the sequence of shifted primes, Goldbach numbers in short intervals, the distribution of Gaussian primes, and the recent work of John Friedlander and Iwaniec on primes that are a sum of a square and a fourth power, and Heath-Brown's work on primes represented as a cube plus twice a cube. This book contains much that is accessible to beginning graduate students, yet also provides insights that will benefit established researchers.

Montgomery at the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference held at Kansas State University in May 1990. The book focuses on important topics in analytic number theory that involve ideas from harmonic analysis. One particularly valuable aspect of the book is that it collects material that was either unpublished or that had appeared only in the research literature. The book should be a useful resource for harmonic analysts interested in moving into research in analytic number theory. In addition, it is suitable as a textbook in an advanced graduate topics course in number theory.

Book excerpt: Atle Selberg's early work, which lies in the fields of analysis and number theory, concerns the Riemann zeta-function, Dirichlet’s L-functions, the Fourier coefficients of modular forms, the distribution of prime numbers and the general sieve method. It is brilliant and unsurpassed, and is in the finest classical tradition. His later work, which cuts across function theory, operator theory, spectral theory, group theory, topology, differential geometry and number theory, has enlarged and transfigured the whole concept and structure of arithmetic. It exemplifies the modern tradition at its sprightly best and reveals Selberg to be one of the master mathematicians of our time. This publication will enable the reader to perceive the depth and originality of Atle Selberg’s ideas and results, and sense the scale and intensity of their influence on contemporary mathematical thought. The second volume contains material on which Selberg has lectured – some later papers from 1988 onward and, in the major part, the “Lectures on Sieves”.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. People were already interested in prime numbers in ancient times, and the first result concerning the distribution of primes appears in Euclid's Elemen ta, where we find a proof of their infinitude, now regarded as canonical. One feels that Euclid's argument has its place in The Book, often quoted by the late Paul ErdOs, where the ultimate forms of mathematical arguments are preserved. Proofs of most other results on prime number distribution seem to be still far away from their optimal form and the aim of this book is to present the development of methods with which such problems were attacked in the course of time. This is not a historical book since we refrain from giving biographical details of the people who have played a role in this development and we do not discuss the questions concerning why each particular person became in terested in primes, because, usually, exact answers to them are impossible to obtain. Our idea is to present the development of the theory of the distribu tion of prime numbers in the period starting in antiquity and concluding at the end of the first decade of the 20th century. We shall also present some later developments, mostly in short comments, although the reader will find certain exceptions to that rule. The period of the last 80 years was full of new ideas (we mention only the applications of trigonometrical sums or the advent of various sieve methods) and certainly demands a separate book.
