Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a hands-on introduction to runtime verification which guides the reader from zero to sufficient practical knowledge required to consider and apply it in industry. It starts with almost no assumptions on the knowledge of the reader and provides exercises throughout the book through which the reader builds their own runtime verification tool. All that is required are basic programming skills and a good working knowledge of the object-oriented paradigm, ideally Java. Drawing from years of the authors' real-world experience, the reader progresses from manually writing runtime verification code to instrumenting monitoring using aspect-oriented programming, after which they explore increasing levels of specification abstraction: automata, regular expressions, and linear time temporal logic. A range of other topics is also explored in the book, including real-time properties, concerns of efficiency and persistence, integration with testing and architectural considerations. The book is written for graduate students specializing in software engineering as well as for industry professionals who need an introduction to the topic of runtime verification. While the book focuses on underlying foundations and practical techniques, it additionally provides for each chapter a reading list in the appendix for the interested reader who would like to deepen their knowledge in a particular area.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Runtime Verification, RV 2015, held in Vienna, Austria, in September 2015. The 15 revised full papers presented together with 4 short papers, 2 tool papers, 4 tutorials, 3 invited talks, and 2 software competition papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 45 submissions. The discussion of the conference centers around two main aspects. The first is to understand wether the runtime verification techniques can practically complement the traditional methods proving programs correct before their execution, such as model checking and theorem proving. The second concerns with formal methods and how their application can improve traditional ad-hoc monitoring techniques used in performance monitoring, hardware design emulation and simulation, etc.

Book excerpt: This Festschrift, dedicated to Klaus Havelund on the occasion of his 65th birthday, celebrated in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, contains papers written by many of his closest friends and collaborators. After work as a software programmer in various Danish companies, Klaus has held research positions at various institutes, including the Danish Datamatics Center, the Ecole Polytechnique, LIP 6 lab in Paris, Aalborg University, and NASA Ames. Since 2006 he has been working in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the federally funded center managed by Caltech whose primary function is to construct and operate planetary robotic spacecraft. His professional awards include the Turning Goals Into Reality engineering innovation award, the Outstanding Technology Development award, and the JPL Mariner, Ranger, Voyager, and Magellan awards. Klaus has provided constant and generous service to the formal methods community by organizing, participating in, and chairing numerous committees. His academic awards include the 2020 SIGSOFT Impact Paper Award, the RV 2018 Test of Time award, and the ASE 2014 and ASE 2016 Most Influential Paper awards. His research activities have generated more than 100 publications with more than 100 collaborators, cited over 12,000 times. The book title reflects Klaus’s main research and engineering focus throughout his career: formal methods, often applied at NASA. The contributions, which went through a peer-review process, cover a wide spectrum of the topics related to his scientific interests, including programming language design, static analysis, runtime verification, dynamic assurance, and automata learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to the foundations of model checking, a fully automated technique for finding flaws in hardware and software; with extensive examples and both practical and theoretical exercises. Our growing dependence on increasingly complex computer and software systems necessitates the development of formalisms, techniques, and tools for assessing functional properties of these systems. One such technique that has emerged in the last twenty years is model checking, which systematically (and automatically) checks whether a model of a given system satisfies a desired property such as deadlock freedom, invariants, and request-response properties. This automated technique for verification and debugging has developed into a mature and widely used approach with many applications. Principles of Model Checking offers a comprehensive introduction to model checking that is not only a text suitable for classroom use but also a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in the field. The book begins with the basic principles for modeling concurrent and communicating systems, introduces different classes of properties (including safety and liveness), presents the notion of fairness, and provides automata-based algorithms for these properties. It introduces the temporal logics LTL and CTL, compares them, and covers algorithms for verifying these logics, discussing real-time systems as well as systems subject to random phenomena. Separate chapters treat such efficiency-improving techniques as abstraction and symbolic manipulation. The book includes an extensive set of examples (most of which run through several chapters) and a complete set of basic results accompanied by detailed proofs. Each chapter concludes with a summary, bibliographic notes, and an extensive list of exercises of both practical and theoretical nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The RV series of workshops brings together researchers from academia and industry who are interested in runtime verification. The goal of the RV workshops is to study the ability to apply lightweight formal verification during the execution of programs. This approach complements the offline use of formal methods which often use large resources. Runtime verification methods and tools include the instrumentation of code with pieces of software that can help to test and monitor it online and detect, and sometimes prevent, potential faults. RV 2009 was held on June 26-28 in Grenoble, France, adjacent to CAV 2009. The program included 11 accepted papers. Two invited talkswere given by Amir Pnueli on "Compositional Approach to Monitoring Linear Temporal Logic Properties" and Sriram Rajamani on "Verification, Testing and Statistics". The program also included three turorials.
