For the most part, they are just and reasonable. It is true that, like all just and reasonable claims which become a popular cry, they are in danger ot being pushed to an extreme. You, perhaps, Christian young men, are in as much danger of doing this as any class among us. You love to hear what is lively, stirring, earnest; you do well. But forget not at the same time, that very much of what is to be done in the pulpit cannot, from its very nature, be thus lively and stirring, and outwardly earnest. What a lively, what a stirring sight is the laying the first stone of a house of prayer. All is liveliness, all is joy; the sun seems to shine brighter than usual, the work men wear their holiday dresses, the schools wave their banners; the great men of the county gather round, and their words do one good to hear: and so, amid the darkness and weakness and worldliness of humanity, that little new discovered isle of light is inaugurated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit and the Stage: Four Lectures These Discourses are the too tardy performance of a duty which for many years past I have been desirous of fulfilling. I have long been persuaded that the question of the Theatre is one of the gravest social consideration, and have never been able to understand the reasonableness of the schism between the Stage, per se, and the healthy religious sentiments of society. That the Pulpit, generally, in the United Kingdom, maintains an attitude of uncompromising, even of fierce, hostility to the Theatre and its associations seems to me to furnish all the more reason why such ministers of religion as do not share this hostility should candidly avow their sentiments on the subject. In parts of these Discourses the tone will indicate my conviction that the apologist, or better, the advocate, of the Drama and the Stage has to contend much more with unreflecting traditionary ecclesiastical sentiment, mere popular sectarian prejudice, than with calm, independent intelligence and genuine religious feeling. Such is my deliberate conviction. The Theatre is not treated with the courtesy of reasonable consideration, but shrieked at with the vulgar clamour of prejudice, led on by a phalanx of clerical fuglemen. The same pious and respectable organ says, The mass of the male sex look upon religion as a womanish kind of thing. Another of these insolent and unworthy attacks is from the pen of one who calls him self A Dear Hearer it has received the most encomiastic eulogies from The Homilist, which, in its usual in ated style, speaks of it as having the ring of Luther and J unius. This expletive style of praise is very cheap and very easy, yet the thing contains hints which may be used, although it is to be deplored that the editor of a periodical, himself a preacher, can only set his hand to endorse the bill filed against all his brethren, and'his whole profession. Its nearest resemblance is found In a German work, entitled Geschichte der Christlichen Homiletik, by C. G. H. Lentz, in two volumes, 1839. It is a history of Christian homiletics - in their principles and practice - in all ages. The plan is, to give sketches of prominent men, criticisms upon their preaching, and brief specimens of their manner of discourse. In this way there are introduced about three hundred pulpit orators. The work of Lentz, however, which has never been translated, differs from this work, not only in the charac ter of the selections, and in many other particulars, but especially in this, that it contains only brief specimens, or extracts, from the several men represented; while in that here submitted, the rule has been to give an entire discourse - thus affording the fairest View of the preachers, as well as furnishing a large number of sermons of the highest order. The design of the work may be stated in few words. It is, First, to render available, to the lovers of sacred things, the great master pieces of pulpit eloquence, and the best discourses of all countries and times - hitherto either locked up in foreign languages, or pro cured with much difficulty and expense: Secondly, to furnish a history of preaching in all parts of the world where the Christian religion has prevailed, from its introduction into each respective country down to the present time, with a View of the pulpit as it now stands: Thirdly, to bring again upon the stage the great and the good of other days; keeping alive and promoting their acquaint ance, and allowing them to speak to the living - which is done by giving sketches of their lives, and by reproducing their choicest discourses.
