Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus of Lectures on European History Notebook - For this purpose a large stiff-backed note-book with a page at least inches, is the best. Take notes on the right hand page only, leaving the left-hand one free for making further notes, quotations, etc., from the books referred to. Notes should be taken in ink, in neat and plain form, with analysis clearly indicated. In taking these notes from books, however, care should be taken not to spend too much time in changing printed matter into poor penman ship. I often find students wasting time in this. Forceful statements of principles should be taken, and catchwords to aid the mind used, rather than transcripts made Of whole pages. The practice Of associating the statements Of the chief authorities with the outline in hand will prove better than over-copying. On the other hand, the student should always read with note-book in hand and Syllabus by his side, the one to receive the sparks and suggestions, the other to aid in classifying the knowledge gained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chief Periods of European History Six: Lectures Read in the University These are the Lectures referred to in the last paragraph of the Preface to the course on the " Methods of Historical Study," lately published. I have added to them the second of two articles which appeared in the Contemporary Review for 1884. The former of them, "Some Neglected Periods of European History," I have not reprinted, as its substance will be found in the present course. The second, "Greek Cities under Roman Rule," as dealing somewhat more in detail with some points which are barely glanced at in the present course, seemed to make a fitting Appendix to it. I find that the same thought as to the political result of modern scientific inventions which is brought out at pp. 184, 185 of these Lectures is also brought out in the Lecture at Edinburgh, reprinted in my little book "Greater Greece and Greater Britain," published last May. This kind of thing is always likely to happen in lectures given in different places. It seemed to me that the thought came naturally in both lectures, and that either would lose something by its being struck out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anthropological History of Europe This new edition of The Anthropological History of Europe seems to be called for not only by the exhaustion of the earlier one, but by the lapse of time (twenty years) since the delivery of the Rhind Lectures of 1891, during which period the limits of what may fairly be termed history have been pushed back in some parts of Europe by hundreds or even thousands of years, and the views I origin ally expressed on some parts of the subject have either been confirmed or rendered more problem atical. I have endeavoured therefore to bring the volume up to date, but have avoided entering on the discussion of such subjects as pygmies and steatopygous men in Europe, of which we as yet know little, and which must as yet be excluded from the domain of history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Modern Europe: Twelve Lectures Delivered in the University of London The author takes this opportunity to thank the nu merous ladies and gentlemen who have honoured him with their attendance, for their patience and kindness. A Hungarian is, as a rule, sure of sympathy in Great Britain; yet the spirit of absolute fairness with which the audience received many an opinion running counter to some of the best cherished national views of history, was very much more than could be expected in many another country. May the readers of this book extend the same fairness to views prompted neither by malice, nor, it is hoped, by inexcusable ignorance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Modern Europe, Vol. 1 The second and less important group of authorities with which I have busied myself during the work of revision com prises the works of Hiiffer, Vivenot, Beer, Helfert, and others, based on Austrian documents, along with the Austrian docu ments and letters that have been published by Vivenot. The last-named writer is himself a partizan, but the material which he has given to the world is most valuable. The mystery in which the Austrian Government until lately enveloped all its actions caused some of these to be described as worse than they really were and I believe that in the First Edition I under estimated the bias of Prussian and north-german writers. Where I have seen reasons to alter any statements, I have done so without reserve, as it appears to me childish for any one who attempts to write history to cling to an Opinion after the balance of evidence seems to be against it. The publication of the second volume of this work has been delayed by the revision of the first; but I hope that it will appear before many months more. I must express my obligations to Mr. Oscar Browning, a fellow-labourer in the same field, who not only furnished me with various corrections, but placed his own lectures at my disposal; and to Mr. Alfred Kingston, whose unfailing kindness and courtesy make so great a difference to those whose work lies in the department of the Record Otfice which is under his care. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Main Currents of European History, 1815-1915 The substance of these ten lectures was delivered under the auspices of the London County Council to a large audience of teachers during the autumn of 1916. The purpose of the lectures was not - what is normally a proper function of lectures - to excite interest; for the audience was already professionally interested in the theme. Still less was it - What is rarely legitimate in lectures - to impart detailed in formation; for the audience was already in possession of excellent text-books. The purpose was the lowly one of reducing a complex and confused century to comprehensible categories, of emphasising its dominant characteristics, of rendering it more readily teachable.
