Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Christian Theology This was a state of things which Spener de plored. Others before him, especially pious lay men, had noticed these evils, but had withdrawn, like the mystics of a former period, and sought in private contemplation that satisfaction of their spiritual wants which they could not obtain from the learned jargon of the pulpit; or if, like An dreas and Arndt, they had lifted up a voice of rem onstrance against the prevailing disorders, it had been drowned in the noise of angry pole mics. But the reputation and influence of Spener were too great to allow his remonstrances to pass unnoticed. Without aiming at the name, he performed the work of a reformer. In the unpretending form of a preface to an edition of Arndt's Sermons, he published in 1675 his Pia Desidert'a, in which he urged the necessity of amending the prevailing mode of instruction and preaching. It was his great object to divert attention from the symbols, and direct it to the scriptures. He wished every student to derive his system for himself directly from the Bible; and to feel and enjoy the truths thus learned, rather than contend about them; and especially he wished the teachers in the universities, and the preachers in the desk, abandoning for ever their foolish questions and subtle dialectics, to labour to promote the solid instruction and the true piety of those committed to their charge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Theology, Vol. 1 of 2 I N presenting this work to the American public, the publishers believe that they are rendering an important service to the religious community at large, and to theological students in particular. The first edition was published at Edinburgh in 1834, and has already obtained a very exten sive circulation in Britain. An estimate may be formed of the value of these Lectures, from the fact of their having received the highest praise of some of the most distinguished theological scholars in Scotland and England; and though expressing in the most decided manner the views of the particular denomination with which their author was connected, (the Presbyterian, ) the catholic spirit with which these Opinions are main tained, the candour with which others are stated, and the ability with which the common Christianity is illustrated and defended, may be learned from the fact of their being warmly recommended by the'leading periodicals of nearly all the Protestant denominations of Britain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Faith This is not a theological treatise on the one hand, nor on the other is it a volume of sermons. Like its predecessor, the volume on Prayer, it has a distinct office to fulfil, an office that in the judgment of the editor is of immense importance. For between the professor's lecture-room and the preacher's study there is a great gulf fixed. In the lecture-room the lectures on systematic theology are laboriously entered into notebooks, which are useful for the exit examinations. But when the active work of the ministry begins, and so many sermons have to be prepared every week, the cupboard into which those notebooks have been stowed away is left undisturbed. The preacher begins to Spin his sermons out of his own brains, with the assistance of such popular books as happen to be at his hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Theology: Lectures Delivered in Chicago Theological Seminary The lectures which compose this volume were delivered in April 1894 to the Chicago Theological Seminary, and are published at the request of the Faculty of that Institution. They do not amount to a system of theology, but the writer believes they are consistent with each other, and would find their place in a system. They are printed as they were delivered, with one exception. The ninth lecture, which excited considerable discussion in the circles to which it was first addressed, has been re-written not with the view of retracting or qualifying anything, but in order, as far as possible, to obviate misconception, and secure a readier acceptance for what the writer thinks true ideas on the authority of Scripture. The notes have been added, partly to justify the statements made in the lectures as to the Opinions of various theologians and schools, partly to acknowledge the writer's obligations to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Theology and Social Progress: The Hampton Lectures for 1905 Too many seem to-day to approach social questions with much sympathy but no genuine conviction, with but little knowledge of average human nature, and less of its past experience or discoveries. The Gospel, the People, the average man - these to-day are the 'weaker brethren.' It is my aim to Show how general welfare is bound up with the faiths and hopes of Christian belief; and again, how the general welfare can only rightly be secured by justice to the particular, by respecting the units which make up the whole: a heap composed of valueless atoms is itself without value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Lectures, Etc: Upon Select Topics in Revealed Theology This volume, as its title imports, consists of Essays, &c., from the pen of Dr. Taylor upon various topics in Revealed Theology. Dr. Taylor did not leave a fully Written system or course of Theological lectures. The notes and briefs from which he lectured are so full indeed, that it would not be dif ficult to give to the public his views in the form of a com plete system of Revealed Theology. But this would involve the necessity of expanding, by another hand, the heads of argu ment which were sketched by him. In many of these views there is little that is original with him, except the arrange ment and development of the reasoning. There seems there fore, to be no sufficient reason for publishing arguments with which theologians are already familiar. It would not how ever be just to the memory of the deceased, nor to the cause of truth, to withhold any discussions which may promise to throw light - upon important scriptural doctrines, or to advance in any way the science of Christian Theology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures and Other Theological Papers That which a general course of Lectures on Theology like the present one naturally commences with, is the subject of Evidence. I shall not, however, enter into the consideration of the general fabric of the Christian Evidences, which is well known to you from the works of many able writers who have devoted themselves to that subject. I shall be doing perhaps something more useful if I call attention to some particular danger connected with the subject of evidence at this day, and endeavour to throw some light on the way in which it is to be met. Apart from, and quite independently of, the particular arguments which unbelievers may use, it is to be observed that the mere existence of a large body of unbelief around us is itself a danger and a disturbance to us. It impresses the imagination. Such mere quantity of unbelief seems to be an argument in itself against revelation. We are perpetually reminded of it in the books of the day, in newspapers and reviews. It does not allow itself to be passed over; it obtrudes itself upon us at every turn; we cannot help observing it. All this affects the imagination. Unbelief is a great fact; it arrests us, and takes hold of our minds as such. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Special Introduction, or the Prolegomena of Systematic Theology The two parts of this book have heretofore been published separately, The Introduction in 1883, and Apologetics in 1882. Professor Smith's lectures on Natural Theology and the Evidences of Christianity (contained in The Introduction) were prepared from 1855 to 1860 for delivery to his classes in Union Theological Seminary. The Lectures on Apologet ics were prepared and delivered in the years 1874 - 5 and 1875 - 6. As the two works properly belong to gether, it has been thought advisable to publish them as one volume, giving the author's complete survey of the field. As well as his earlier and later treatment of some of the subjects. In The Intro duction will be found the two divisions of Apolo getics not treated in the latter course of lectures, viz Historical Apologetics and Philosophical Apologetics. Although the Chapter on Natural Theology is to some extent the same as given in the latter course as Fundamental Apologetics, yet in almost every case the argument is presented in dif ferent language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Doctrine and Systematic Theology The pages of this volume contain the substance of lectures on Systematic Theology which have been given by the writer, for nearly forty years, to successive classes of students at the Moravian College and Theological Seminary of Bethlehem, Pa. It is the first work of this kind written in the English language by a member of the oldest Protes tant Church, founded by the followers of J ohn Hus in 1457. While in no sense an official publication, but entirely inde pendent and personal in its statements and conclusions, it will be found to represent fairly the view - point of the Mo ravian Church or Unitas F ratrum, -as to the leading features of Christian Doctrine and Systematic Theology. Some persons may think it ill advised to publish such a work at this time of theological unrest and of apparently sharp contrasts between traditional and modern theology. But as to all that is really essential in Christian doctrine, it is -as timely now as ever, to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints (jude v. The Gospel of Jesus Christ, our blessed Saviour, is as well suited to the needs of the twentieth cen tury of the Christian era as to the first. As for non essentials, such as denominational distinctions, ecclesiastical formulas, dogmatical definitions and historical criticism, it behooves all honest seekers after the truth, whether they call themselves orthodox or liberal, conservative or ad vanced, to acknowledge the limitations of our religious knowledge and understanding. For at best we know in part and we see in a mirror darkly (i Cor. Realizing this truth, we will be prepared to discuss all ques tions that present themselves in the different departments of Christian doctrine, in the spirit of charity, without narrow prejudice or assumption of a monopoly of wisdom, taking into consideration, if possible, all the new light which science, history and Christian experience have shed[preface to the jfirst Ebition. Moreover, these lectures dealt with profound and intricate problems, in the discussion of which much depends upon a precision of statement rarely found in class room notes. In addition, the treatment varied from year to year, far more than was the case with lectures in the first course, accord ing to the changing demands of theological interest and the cor responding shiftings of emphasis on the part of the lecturer. The magnitude and delicacy of the task are mainly responsible for the delay in the preparation and publication of the present volume, but it is believed that the former students and many friends of Dr. Everett, as well as all who are interested in the subjects here discussed, will welcome this literary memorial of a subtle and luminous thinker who, as his mural tablet in the chapel of the School he loved and served justly says, showed by life and doctrine the unity of the Spirit in Truth, Goodness.
