Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Architecture and Painting I forgot, in preparing the second Lecture for the press, to quote a passage from Lord Lindsay's Christian Art, illustrative of what is said in that lecture (p. 77) respecting the energy of the mediaeval republics This passage, describing the circumstances under which the Campanile of the Duomo of Flor ence was built, is interesting also as noticing the universality of talent which was required of architects and which, as I have asserted in the Addenda (p. Always ought to be required of them. I do not, however, now regret the omission, as I cannot easily imagine a better preface to an essay on civil architecture than this simple statement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pre-Raphaelitism: Lectures on Architecture and Painting, &C To debate as to which artists have been really faithful to the original principles of the Brotherhood is a sterile exercise. But it may be of use and interest to examine the history of the movement, and to see which of its inspiring ideas were of most value in that renewal of English painting it admittedly achieved. It is the labor of years (if it is not the illumination of a moment) and not now for us. All we can do is to note the most salient points and block out the main lines of what I hope for many may be subsequently a study as revealing as it is absorbing. Here and there a sentence which seemed obscure has been mended, and the passages which had not been previously written, have been, of course imperfectly, supplied from memory. But I am well assured that nothing of any substantial importance, which was said in the lecture-room, is either omitted, or altered in its signification, with the exception only of a few sentences struck out from the notice of the works of Turner, in consequence of the impossibility of engraving the drawings by which they were illustrated, except at a cost which would have too much raised the price of the volume. Some elucidatory remarks have, however, been added at the close of the second and fourth Lectures, which I hope may be of more use than the passages which I was obliged to omit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason in Architecture: Lectures Delivered at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Year 1906 The moral it is intended to point is briefly this. That the styles of the past, which we have been taught to take as our models, assumed the forms, under which we know them, not from arbitrary design or fancy, but as a consequence of rational and logical de ve10pment from causes partly external and partly social, which are discoverable, and with out knowing which the style is only imper fectly understood. That the external causes may practically be summed Up under the head of necessities or conveniency Of construction. That, as in the past progress and fresh depar tures in the Art can be accounted for by changes in conditions such as these, from one generation to another, so at the present day our Architecture will depend for its vitality upon its accommodation to the circumstances of the day. Consequently, that the mere blind following of ancient example in which most modern schools have thought to find safety will lead us no whither; that Archaeology is not Architecture; and that it is the spirit rather than the letter of the great styles of the past that will be of use to us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History and Principles of Painting Here, then, is my apology - The hope of being useful, the desire to assist in preserving pure and unadulterated the practice and the ap plication of painting in our school of art: to preserve it in a rational and needful state of control over that wild luxury of taste, that excess of delight in the ornamental rather than in the true and essential beauties of, art, which has so repeatedly been fatal to its real interest; and which certainly threatens to overwhelm it here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Architecture, Comprising the History of the Art From the Earliest Times to the Present Day: Delivered at the Surrey and Russell Institutions, London, and the Philosophical Institution at Birmingham The difficulties which surround the acquire ment of aknowledge of the elements of civil architecture are less formidable than appear at first sight. These become easier of access as we advance, and more pleasing of aspect as we become intimate with them. The dense medium of technical formalities which obscures their attractions, like a thick and yellow fog, vanishes before the heat of determined ardour, and leaves nothing but their beauties to allure and to reward. Some elucidatory remarks have, however, been added at the close of the second and fourth Lectures, which I hope may be of more use than the passages which I was obliged to omit. The drawings by which the Lectures on Architecture were illustrated have been carefully reduced, and well transferred to wood by Mr. Thurston Thompson. Those which were given in the course of the notices of schools of painting could not be so transferred, having been drawn in color; and I have therefore merely had a few lines, absolutely necessary to make the text intelligible, copied from engravings. I forgot, in preparing the second Lecture for the press, to quote a passage from Lord Lindsay's "Christian Art," illustrative of what is said in that lecture (§ 52), respecting the energy of the mediæval republics. This passage, describing the circumstances under which the Campanile of the Duomo of Florence was built, is interesting also as noticing the universality of talent which was required of architects; and which, as I have asserted in the Addenda (§ 60), always ought to be required of them. I do not, however, now regret [vi] the omission, as I cannot easily imagine a better preface to an essay on civil architecture than this simple statement.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Painting and Design Finding in early life, the great want of a concise course of anatomical investigation by a painter, and fit only for a painter's use, I have endeavoured in these lectures to supply that deficiency, taking John Bell's admirable work on the bones and muscles as my guide, and adding all I had ascertained from dissection and reference to the' antique, rejecting what belongs ex elusively to the surgeon, and omitting no internal muscle which affects the external shape. It is hoped the student will be pleased to have his road shortened; for, although my own pupils have always had the advantage of this method, it is only now for the first time placed before the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Painting: Delivered at the Royal Academy The following six Lectures of Fuseli, who held for many years the situations of Professor of Painting and Keeper of the Royal Academy, now published for the first time, are printed verbatim from his manuscripts. I considered that (as Executor to his Will), in doing this, I should best meet the views of the deceased and the wishes of the Public, rather than in acting upon any opinions of my own, by using the pruning knife; for I am well aware that a few of the notions and some of the expressions may be found, from his pen, in other places. But to have omitted these would have injured the general argument, and severed the chain of his reasoning. With such feelings, the Lectures now appear without any omission or emendation on my part.
