Book Synopsis Lecture Notes on Functional Analysis by : Alberto Bressan
Download or read book Lecture Notes on Functional Analysis written by Alberto Bressan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2013 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is addressed to graduate students in mathematics or other disciplines who wish to understand the essential concepts of functional analysis and their applications to partial differential equations. The book is intentionally concise, presenting all the fundamental concepts and results but omitting the more specialized topics. Enough of the theory of Sobolev spaces and semigroups of linear operators is included as needed to develop significant applications to elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic PDEs. Throughout the book, care has been taken to explain the connections between theorems in functional analysis and familiar results of finite-dimensional linear algebra. The main concepts and ideas used in the proofs are illustrated with a large number of figures. A rich collection of homework problems is included at the end of most chapters. The book is suitable as a text for a one-semester graduate course.

Download or read book Notes on Functional Analysis written by Rajendra Bhatia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes are a record of a one semester course on Functional Analysis given by the author to second year Master of Statistics students at the Indian Statistical Institute, New Delhi. Students taking this course have a strong background in real analysis, linear algebra, measure theory and probability, and the course proceeds rapidly from the definition of a normed linear space to the spectral theorem for bounded selfadjoint operators in a Hilbert space. The book is organised as twenty six lectures, each corresponding to a ninety minute class session. This may be helpful to teachers planning a course on this topic. Well prepared students can read it on their own.
Book Synopsis Functional Analysis by : Theo Bühler
Download or read book Functional Analysis written by Theo Bühler and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-08-08 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It begins in Chapter 1 with an introduction to the necessary foundations, including the Arzelà–Ascoli theorem, elementary Hilbert space theory, and the Baire Category Theorem. Chapter 2 develops the three fundamental principles of functional analysis (uniform boundedness, open mapping theorem, Hahn–Banach theorem) and discusses reflexive spaces and the James space. Chapter 3 introduces the weak and weak topologies and includes the theorems of Banach–Alaoglu, Banach–Dieudonné, Eberlein–Šmulyan, Kre&ibreve;n–Milman, as well as an introduction to topological vector spaces and applications to ergodic theory. Chapter 4 is devoted to Fredholm theory. It includes an introduction to the dual operator and to compact operators, and it establishes the closed image theorem. Chapter 5 deals with the spectral theory of bounded linear operators. It introduces complex Banach and Hilbert spaces, the continuous functional calculus for self-adjoint and normal operators, the Gelfand spectrum, spectral measures, cyclic vectors, and the spectral theorem. Chapter 6 introduces unbounded operators and their duals. It establishes the closed image theorem in this setting and extends the functional calculus and spectral measure to unbounded self-adjoint operators on Hilbert spaces. Chapter 7 gives an introduction to strongly continuous semigroups and their infinitesimal generators. It includes foundational results about the dual semigroup and analytic semigroups, an exposition of measurable functions with values in a Banach space, and a discussion of solutions to the inhomogeneous equation and their regularity properties. The appendix establishes the equivalence of the Lemma of Zorn and the Axiom of Choice, and it contains a proof of Tychonoff's theorem. With 10 to 20 elaborate exercises at the end of each chapter, this book can be used as a text for a one-or-two-semester course on functional analysis for beginning graduate students. Prerequisites are first-year analysis and linear algebra, as well as some foundational material from the second-year courses on point set topology, complex analysis in one variable, and measure and integration.

Book Synopsis Topics in Nonlinear Functional Analysis by : L. Nirenberg
Download or read book Topics in Nonlinear Functional Analysis written by L. Nirenberg and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first appearance as a set of lecture notes published by the Courant Institute in 1974, this book served as an introduction to various subjects in nonlinear functional analysis. The current edition is a reprint of these notes, with added bibliographic references. Topological and analytic methods are developed for treating nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations. The first two chapters of the book introduce the notion of topological degree and develop its basic properties. These properties are used in later chapters in the discussion of bifurcation theory (the possible branching of solutions as parameters vary), including the proof of Rabinowitz global bifurcation theorem. Stability of the branches is also studied. The book concludes with a presentation of some generalized implicit function theorems of Nash-Moser type with applications to Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory and to conjugacy problems. For more than 20 years, this book continues to be an excellent graduate level textbook and a useful supplementary course text. Titles in this series are copublished with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.
Book Synopsis Nonstandard Methods in Functional Analysis by : Siu-Ah Ng
Download or read book Nonstandard Methods in Functional Analysis written by Siu-Ah Ng and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1960s, by using techniques from the model theory of first-order logic, Robinson gave a rigorous formulation and extension of Leibniz' infinitesimal calculus. Since then, the methodology has found applications in a wide spectrum of areas in mathematics, with particular success in the probability theory and functional analysis. In the latter, fruitful results were produced with Luxemburg's invention of the nonstandard hull construction. However, there is still no publication of a coherent and self-contained treatment of functional analysis using methods from nonstandard analysis. This publication aims to fill this gap.
Book Synopsis A First Course in Functional Analysis by : S. David Promislow
Download or read book A First Course in Functional Analysis written by S. David Promislow and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 2008-04-25 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise introduction to the major concepts of functional analysis Requiring only a preliminary knowledge of elementary linear algebra and real analysis, A First Course in Functional Analysis provides an introduction to the basic principles and practical applications of functional analysis. Key concepts are illustrated in a straightforward manner, which facilitates a complete and fundamental understanding of the topic. This book is based on the author's own class-tested material and uses clear language to explain the major concepts of functional analysis, including Banach spaces, Hilbert spaces, topological vector spaces, as well as bounded linear functionals and operators. As opposed to simply presenting the proofs, the author outlines the logic behind the steps, demonstrates the development of arguments, and discusses how the concepts are connected to one another. Each chapter concludes with exercises ranging in difficulty, giving readers the opportunity to reinforce their comprehension of the discussed methods. An appendix provides a thorough introduction to measure and integration theory, and additional appendices address the background material on topics such as Zorn's lemma, the Stone-Weierstrass theorem, Tychonoff's theorem on product spaces, and the upper and lower limit points of sequences. References to various applications of functional analysis are also included throughout the book. A First Course in Functional Analysis is an ideal text for upper-undergraduate and graduate-level courses in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and engineering. It also serves as a valuable reference for practitioners across various disciplines, including the physical sciences, economics, and finance, who would like to expand their knowledge of functional analysis.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Measure Theory and Functional Analysis by : Piermarco Cannarsa
Download or read book Introduction to Measure Theory and Functional Analysis written by Piermarco Cannarsa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to theories that play a crucial role in modern mathematics, such as integration and functional analysis, employing a unifying approach that views these two subjects as being deeply intertwined. This feature is particularly evident in the broad range of problems examined, the solutions of which are often supported by generous hints. If the material is split into two courses, it can be supplemented by additional topics from the third part of the book, such as functions of bounded variation, absolutely continuous functions, and signed measures. This textbook addresses the needs of graduate students in mathematics, who will find the basic material they will need in their future careers, as well as those of researchers, who will appreciate the self-contained exposition which requires no other preliminaries than basic calculus and linear algebra.

Book Synopsis Functional Analysis by : Markus Haase
Download or read book Functional Analysis written by Markus Haase and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces functional analysis at an elementary level without assuming any background in real analysis, for example on metric spaces or Lebesgue integration. It focuses on concepts and methods relevant in applied contexts such as variational methods on Hilbert spaces, Neumann series, eigenvalue expansions for compact self-adjoint operators, weak differentiation and Sobolev spaces on intervals, and model applications to differential and integral equations. Beyond that, the final chapters on the uniform boundedness theorem, the open mapping theorem and the Hahn-Banach theorem provide a stepping-stone to more advanced texts. The exposition is clear and rigorous, featuring full and detailed proofs. Many examples illustrate the new notions and results. Each chapter concludes with a large collection of exercises, some of which are referred to in the margin of the text, tailor-made in order to guide the student digesting the new material. Optional sections and chapters supplement the mandatory parts and allow for modular teaching spanning from basic to honors track level.
