Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Early Language Learning by : Janet Enever
Download or read book Early Language Learning written by Janet Enever and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first collection of research studies to explore the potential for mixed methods to shed light on foreign or second language learning by young learners in instructed contexts. It brings together recent studies undertaken in Cameroon, China, Croatia, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Tanzania and the UK. Themes include English as an additional language, English as a second or foreign language, French as a modern foreign language, medium of instruction controversies and content and language integrated learning (CLIL). The volume reviews the choice of research methodologies for early language learning research in schools with a particular focus on mixed methods and proposes that in the multidisciplinary context of early language learning this paradigm allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the evidence than other approaches might provide. The collection will be of interest to in-service and trainee teachers of young language learners, graduate students in the field of TESOL and early language learning, teacher educators, researchers and policymakers.

A great read for sporty kids.” New Zealand Herald “[Brian Falkner is] a children’s author who can write with the lightness of touch and everyday truth often absent in young fiction.” North and South Magazine “This is the stuff that some boys dream about … Though this is Falkner’s first novel, he demonstrates skill in being able to tell a good yarn told dominantly through the focalising character of Danny with sufficient dialogue and suspense that it would work as a read aloud suitable for intermediate grades.” Reading Time magazine “This book will appeal to boys and girls, whether or not they are rugby league fans…” Sunday Star Times “I think the really good thing about the book is its incredibly persuasive writing. Falkner is a sharp, varied, quite nuanced writer.” Radio New Zealand
Book Synopsis Language Proficiency in Native and Non-native Speakers by : Jan H. Hulstijn

This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written for both seasoned and novice researchers, presents a theory of what is called Basic and Higher Language Cognition (BLC and HLC), a theory aimed at making some fundamental issues concerning first and second language learning and bilingualism (more) empirical. The first part of the book provides background for and explication of the theory as well as an agenda for future research, while the second part reports on selected studies of language proficiency in native speakers, as well as non-native speakers, and studies of the relationship between literacy in a first and second language. Conceptual and methodological problems in measuring language proficiency in research on second language acquisition and bilingualism are also discussed. Further, the notion of levels of language proficiency, as rendered by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), is critically examined, suggesting ways of empirically investigating a number of questions that the CEFR raises but is not capable of answering.

Book Synopsis The Neurocognition of Language by : Colin M. Brown
Download or read book The Neurocognition of Language written by Colin M. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neurocognition of Language is the first critical overview of the cognitive neuroscience of language, one of the fastest-moving and most exciting areas in language research today. And it is a necessity for anyone requiring a summary of our current understanding of the relation between language and the brain. It brings together human language experts who discuss the representations and structures of language as well as the cognitive architectures that underlie speaking, listening, and reading. In addition to valuable reviews of existing brain imaging literature on word and sentence processing and contributions from brain lesion data, this book provides a basis for future brain imaging research. It even explains the prospects and problems of brain imaging techniques for the study of language, presents some of the most recent and promising analytic procedures for relating brain imaging data to the higher cognitive functions, and contains a review of the neuroanatomical structure of Broca's language area. Uniquely interdisciplinary, this book offers researchers and students in cognitive neuroscience with state-of-the-art reviews of the major language functions, while being of equal interest to researchers in linguistics and language who want to learn about language's neural bases.
Download or read book Emotion written by Robert D. Kavanaugh and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a range of approaches, both theoretical and applied, to the topic of emotion by neuroscientists, developmentalists, social and personality psychologists, and clinical psychologists. Readers should appreciate the diversity of questions and methods presented, as well as note the common ground that emerges in these discussions. Chapter coverage ranges from the neural bases of emotion to the role of emotion in psychotherapy. There are vigorous discussions regarding the concept of emotion, its role in development, and its application to contemporary problems such as violence and war. The papers in this volume begin a dialogue about possible intersections in the study of emotion from scholars who embrace sharply different perspectives on this complex topic -- a fitting tribute in memory of G. Stanley Hall.
