Book Synopsis Foundations for a Science of Language by : Gustave Guillaume
Download or read book Foundations for a Science of Language written by Gustave Guillaume and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents, for the first time in English, a representative view of Gustave Guillaume's thought. The texts, drawn mainly from his manuscript notes for lectures at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris, were selected as far as possible for their accessibility, as requiring no prior knowledge of his work. The result is a panorama of the far-ranging and often provocative thought of one of the twentieth century's most original linguists.
Download or read book Language and the Subject written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains nineteen essays — eighteen here presented for the first time — exploring the question of subjectivity as seen from a linguistic perspective. Part I concerns the relationship between the linguistic subject, particularly the grammatical first person, and the subject in more general sense of ‘person'. Topics covered include deixis, verbal marking and temporalisation, and performatives. Part II concerns the relationship of subjectivity to the experience of reading, and as such considers the semiotics of both literary and non-literary texts, inter-modal representation, authorship and intertextuality. The essays in the volume are principally influenced by the thinking of Saussure, Jakobson, Guillaume, Benveniste, Wittgenstein, Barthes and Deleuze, and the book will appeal to scholars with an interest in theoretical linguistics, semiotics, discourse, analysis and philosophy of language. Karl Simms provides comprehensive introductions to each of the parts, making the book accessible to inform general readers with an interest in cultural and communication studies.

Book Synopsis Prepositions in Their Syntactic, Semantic, and Pragmatic Context by : Susanne Feigenbaum
Download or read book Prepositions in Their Syntactic, Semantic, and Pragmatic Context written by Susanne Feigenbaum and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing interest in prepositions is reflected by this impressive collection of papers from leading scholars of various fields. The selected contributions of Prepositions in their Syntactic, Semantic and Pragmatic Context focus on the local and temporal semantics of prepositions in relation to their context, too. Following an introduction which puts this new approach into a thematical and historical perspective, the volume presents fifteen studies in the following areas: The semantics of space dynamics (mainly on French prepositions); Language acquisition (aphasia and code-switching); Artificial intelligence (mainly of English prepositions); Specific languages: Hebrew (from a number of perspectives syntax, semiotics, and sociolinguistic impact on morphology), Maltese, the Melanesian English-based Creole Bislama, and Biblical translations into Judeo-Greek.

Book Synopsis Invariance, Markedness and Distinctive Feature Analysis by : Yishai Tobin
Download or read book Invariance, Markedness and Distinctive Feature Analysis written by Yishai Tobin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1994-12-15 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a new kind of contrastive analysis of two unrelated languages — English and Hebrew — based on the semiotic concepts of invariance, markedness and distinctive feature theory. It concentrates on linguistic forms and constructions which are remarkably different in each language despite the fact that they share the same familiar classifications and labels. Tobin demonstrates how and why traditional and modern syntactic categories such as grammatical number; verb tense, aspect, mood and voice; conditionals and interrogatives; etc., are not equivalent across languages. It is argued that these so-called universal concepts function differently in each language system because they belong to distinct language-specific semantic domains which are marked by different sets of semantic features. The data used in this volume have been taken from a wide range of both spoken and written discourse and texts reflecting people's actual use of language presented in their relevant linguistic and situational contexts.
