Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis A History of Economic Thought in France by : Gilbert Faccarello
Download or read book A History of Economic Thought in France written by Gilbert Faccarello and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-02 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, there has been a long and sustained interest in studying the history of economic ideas in France. Interest appeared to wane after World War II, but in recent decades, there has been a marked renaissance of interest and research in the contributions of French-speaking authors. Drawing on the flow of recent research, this book presents a new assessment of the history of political economy in France incorporating both novel presentations of some traditional subjects and topics that are not usually studied. This second volume analyses the evolution of political economy during the long nineteenth century, combining an assessment of both liberals and their opponents. Its first part covers the most outstanding contributions to political economy in the age of industry, from the founding fathers (L.-C.-C. Destutt de Tracy and J. –B. Say) until the pre-World War I period, including that of A.-A. Cournot, J. Dupuit, the French liberal economists, and L. Walras. The volume then outlines the critiques of liberal political economy, focusing on the analyses of J.-C.L.S. de Sismondi, C.-H. de Saint-Simon and his followers, and the successive generations of socialist and associationist authors, not forgetting the sociological critique. A substantial postlude concludes the volume with a survey of recent developments of French economic thought up to the present day. A History of Economic Thought in France will be invaluable reading for advanced students and researchers of the history of economic thought, political economy, intellectual history and French history.

Book Synopsis Political Economy and Liberalism in France by : Robert Leroux
Download or read book Political Economy and Liberalism in France written by Robert Leroux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-04 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the work of Frédéric Bastiat (1801-1850), one of the towering intellectual figures of nineteenth century France. More than anyone else of his time, Bastiat personified the struggle of liberalism and science against socialism and utopia. Between 1844 in 1850, his campaign for the idea of liberty and his commitment to the discipline of political economy made him one of the most vigorous champions of economic liberalism in France. Bastiat put forth one of the most ambitious interpretations of the liberalism of his time, one that entailed both a critique of primitive socialism and a concern to provide political economy with a theoretical foundation. His thinking is far more sophisticated than would appear at first glance. Nor can it be confined, as so many commentators would have us believe, to its strictly economic dimension. The themes that Bastiat addressed – free trade, competition, labour, among others – certainly helped to reduce it to this dimension. Yet he did not limit himself to these issues, even if he dealt with them at length. He also paid close attention to the political, moral, social and religious dimensions. Coming, as Bastiat’s writing did, at a decisive moment in the history of French liberalism, the very existence of his work explodes the long-standing received idea to the effect that liberalism, and in particular economic liberalism, is the exclusive domain of Anglo-Saxon countries. Bastiat’s work thus offers a solid rebuttal to Hayek, who proclaimed "the total absence of a liberal tradition in France." This book should be of interest to students and researchers of many strands of economics, as well as those looking at French liberalism and the history of social science more generally.

Based on original archival research, The Second French Republic gives a detailed account of the internal tensions that irrevocably weakened France’s shortest republic. Book excerpt: John Stuart Mill's 'The Collected Works of John Stuart Mill' is a landmark collection of essays and philosophical writings that explore topics such as utilitarianism, political economy, and individual freedom. Mill's writing is characterized by its clarity, logical reasoning, and commitment to advancing social and political progress. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century England, Mill's works are considered essential reading for anyone interested in political philosophy and ethics. The collection includes influential works such as 'On Liberty' and 'Utilitarianism', which continue to shape modern debates on individual liberty and the role of government in society. John Stuart Mill, a prominent British philosopher and economist, was a leading figure in the utilitarian movement and a fierce advocate for individual rights and freedom of speech. His upbringing in a family of philosophers and his own experiences as a civil servant greatly influenced his writings, which sought to reconcile individual liberty with social progress. Mill's insightful and thought-provoking essays continue to resonate with contemporary issues and will undoubtedly enrich the intellectual curiosity of any reader.
