Une attention particulière est accordée aux institutions civiques, qui jouaient le rôle de structures de marché et furent à la base du développement économique de la Grèce des cités. Ainsi, on comprend comment le monde grec a su tirer le meilleur parti de son cadre écologique et de la dynamique de sa population. L'auteur analyse ensuite la production agricole et artisanale en posant la question des modalités de la croissance. Enfin, il propose une réponse à la question toujours lancinante du supposé " échec du passage au capitalisme " de l'économie antique.

En se plaçant dans la perspective de la longue durée, c’est enfin la question de la performance du marché des cités grecques qui se trouve posée. Tout en décrivant les systèmes d’échange, cet ouvrage propose donc des solutions nouvelles sur des questions de fond. Comme le premier volume, il est appelé à renouveler profondément notre vision de l’économie de la Grèce ancienne. Alain BRESSON, qui a été professeur invité à Hambourg et membre de l’Institute for Advanced Study à Princeton en 2001, est professeur à l’université de Bordeaux et à l’université de Chicago. Spécialiste de l’économie de la Grèce ancienne, il est, entre autres, l’auteur de La cité marchande (Bordeaux, 2000).
