Book Synopsis Historical Materialism and the Economics of Karl Marx by : Benedetto Croce
Download or read book Historical Materialism and the Economics of Karl Marx written by Benedetto Croce and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical materialism is what is called a fashionable subject. The theory came into being fifty years ago, and for a time remained obscure and limited; but during the last six or seven years it has rapidly attained great fame and an extensive literature, which is daily increasing, has grown up around it. It is not my intention to write once again the account, already given many times, of the origin of this doctrine; nor to restate and criticise the now well-known passages in which Marx and Engels asserted the theory, nor the different views of its opponents, its supporters, its exponents, and its correctors and corruptors. My object is merely to submit to my colleagues some few remarks concerning the doctrine, taking it in the form in which it appears in a recent book by Professor Antonio Labriola, of the University of Rome. For many reasons, it does not come within my province to praise Labriola's book. But I cannot help saying as a needful explanation, that it appears to me to be the fullest and most adequate treatment of the question. The book is free from pedantry and learned tattle, whilst it shows in every line signs of the author's complete knowledge of all that has been written on the subject: a book, in short, which saves the annoyance of controversy with erroneous and exaggerated opinions, which in it appear as superseded. It has a grand opportunity in Italy, where the materialistic theory of history is known almost solely in the spurious form bestowed on it by an ingenious professor of economics, who even pretends to be its inventor.

Book Synopsis Welfare Theory, Public Action, and Ethical Values by : Roger E. Backhouse
Download or read book Welfare Theory, Public Action, and Ethical Values written by Roger E. Backhouse and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative history of welfare economics challenges the view that welfare economics can be discussed without taking ethical values into account. Whatever their theoretical commitments, when economists have considered practical problems relating to public policy, they have adopted a wider range of ethical values, whether equality, justice, freedom, or democracy. Even canonical authors in the history of welfare economics are shown to have adopted ethical positions different from those with which they are commonly associated. Welfare Theory, Public Action, and Ethical Values explores the reasons and implications of this, drawing on concepts of welfarism and non-welfarism developed in modern welfare economics. The authors exemplify how economic theory, public affairs and political philosophy interact, challenging the status quo in order to push economists and historians to reconsider the nature and meaning of welfare economics.
Book Synopsis The Economist as Public Intellectual by : Steven G. Medema
Download or read book The Economist as Public Intellectual written by Steven G. Medema and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economist as Public Intellectual examines the power of individual economists to intervene in public affairs and argues that economists' public interventions have had profound consequences for both the structure and the content of the public sphere. Focusing on the encounters between economists and their publics in the United Kingdom and the United States, the essays in this volume demonstrate how publicity served different purposes in the evolving configurations of academe, business, government, and media during the twentieth century. The economists discussed include Gary Becker, Milton Friedman, John Kenneth Galbraith, and John Maynard Keynes. This volume concludes with a timely examination of economists' reaction to the current financial downturn. Subscribers to History of Political Economy will receive a copy of The Economist as Public Intellectual. Tiago Mata is Senior Research Associate in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge. Steven G. Medema is Professor of Economics at the University of Colorado at Denver.
Book Synopsis Neglected Links in Economics and Society by : Dieter Bögenhold
Download or read book Neglected Links in Economics and Society written by Dieter Bögenhold and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-27 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the Neglected Links in economics and society. These neglected links are the inner bonds and lines which keep the society and economy together and are almost interconnected although they are very often treated and discussed separately in different discourses. Contemporary discussion has forgotten to think universally and to integrate items into one common field of observation. Instead, too often particular items are studied and discussed as being independent of each other without acknowledging a broader context. The book gives an exemplary instruction on how to treat reciprocal links and how to work in an interdisciplinary way, which tackles history, sociology and economics at least. By so doing, the book as also serves as an educational instruction for integrative and interdisciplinary science instead of recapitulating mono-disciplinary approaches. Discussion includes topics such as social and economic inequality research, limits of rationality, and orthodoxies and heterodoxies of economic research, as well as a discussion of the heroes of interdisciplinary thought.

The book cuts through the existing data fog by offering a wide range of up-to-date academic findings and institutional expertise. Those findings are rounded off with lessons to be learned from historical developments (Ireland s success story), an evaluation of current trends (the role of China) and an investment promotion agency policy for attracting sustainable investment (CzechInvest). Contributions made by central bank officials, institutional representatives, members of academia and professionals provide for a uniquely complementary view on FDI developments and their implications. At a time of big changes in the FDI landscape, this book offers both empirical and econometric evidence on foreign direct investment and will be of great interest to economists and other experts in the fields of economic policy and European integration from central, commercial and investment banks, governments, international organizations, universities and research institutes. Book Synopsis The Future of Law and Economics by : Guido Calabresi
Download or read book The Future of Law and Economics written by Guido Calabresi and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a concise, compelling argument, one of the founders and most influential advocates of the law and economics movement divides the subject into two separate areas, which he identifies with Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. The first, Benthamite, strain, “economic analysis of law,” examines the legal system in the light of economic theory and shows how economics might render law more effective. The second strain, law and economics, gives equal status to law, and explores how the more realistic, less theoretical discipline of law can lead to improvements in economic theory. It is the latter approach that Judge Calabresi advocates, in a series of eloquent, thoughtful essays that will appeal to students and scholars alike.
Book Synopsis Energy Transition Metals by : Lukas Boer
Download or read book Energy Transition Metals written by Lukas Boer and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The energy transition requires substantial amounts of metals such as copper, nickel, cobalt and lithium. Are these metals a key bottleneck? We identify metal-specific demand shocks, estimate supply elasticities and pin down the price impact of the energy transition in a structural scenario analysis. Metal prices would reach historical peaks for an unprecedented, sustained period in a net-zero emissions scenario. The total value of metals production would rise more than four-fold for the period 2021 to 2040, rivaling the total value of crude oil production. Metals are a potentially important input into integrated assessments models of climate change.
