Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Welche 1 Vgl. Book Synopsis Mathematicians Under the Nazis by : Sanford L. Segal
Download or read book Mathematicians Under the Nazis written by Sanford L. Segal and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of the Nazi regime on the lives of mathematicians ranged from limitations on foreign contact to power struggles that rattled entire institutions, from changed work patterns to military draft, deportation, and death. Based on extensive archival research, Mathematicians under the Nazis shows how these mathematicians, variously motivated, reacted to the period's intense political pressures. It details the consequences of their actions on their colleagues and on the practice and organs of German mathematics, including its curricula, institutions, and journals. Throughout, Segal's focus is on the biographies of individuals, including mathematicians who resisted the injection of ideology into their profession, some who worked in concentration camps, and others (such as Ludwig Bieberbach) who used the "Aryanization" of their profession to further their own agendas. Some of the figures are no longer well known; others still tower over the field. All lived lives complicated by Nazi power.

Book Synopsis Ambivalences of Creating Life by : Kristin Hagen
Download or read book Ambivalences of Creating Life written by Kristin Hagen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Synthetic biology" is the label of a new technoscientific field with many different facets and agendas. One common aim is to "create life", primarily by using engineering principles to design and modify biological systems for human use. In a wider context, the topic has become one of the big cases in the legitimization processes associated with the political agenda to solve global problems with the aid of (bio-)technological innovation. Conceptual-level and meta-level analyses are needed: we should sort out conceptual ambiguities to agree on what we talk about, and we need to spell out agendas to see the disagreements clearly. The book is based on the interdisciplinary summer school "Analyzing the societal dimensions of synthetic biology", which took place in Berlin in September 2014. The contributions address controversial discussions around the philosophical examination, public perception, moral evaluation and governance of synthetic biology.

Book Synopsis Body and Soul in Ancient Philosophy by : Gesellschaft für antike Philosophie. Kongress
Download or read book Body and Soul in Ancient Philosophy written by Gesellschaft für antike Philosophie. Kongress and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of body and soul has a long history that can be traced back to the beginnings of Greek culture. The existential question of what happened to the soul at the moment of death, whether and in what form there is life after death, and of the exact relationship between body and soul was answered in different ways in Greek philosophy, from the early days to Late Antiquity. The contributions in this volume not only do justice to the breadth of the topic, they also cover the entire period from the Pre-Socratics to Late Antiquity. Particular attention is paid to Plato, Aristotle and Hellenistic philosophers, that is the Stoics and the Epicureans.
Book Synopsis Translation as Social Action by : Palma Zlateva
Download or read book Translation as Social Action written by Palma Zlateva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, Translation as Social Action is a varied collection of essays, which addresses translation as social action as its central theme, the book proposes a model of the translator as an agent in his or her own right. Translation is seen not just as a transfer of meanings from one language to another, but rather as an arena in which different cultures meet in the person of the translator. This perspective provides a complete contrast to Western translation studies, concerned with whether or not translation is really possible. Together the essays reveal a distinct tradition grappling with the most important topics in translation studies in ways that are different and challenging. The collection is essential reading for translation studies, as well as providing an interesting perspective on comparative literature and Eastern European studies.
Book Synopsis Translating as a Purposeful Activity by : Christiane Nord
Download or read book Translating as a Purposeful Activity written by Christiane Nord and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopstheorie). Both these approaches are functionalist: they seek to liberate translators from servitude to the source text, seeing translation as a new communicative act that must be purposeful with respect to the translator's client and readership. As one of the leading figures in this field, Christiane Nord gives the first full survey of functionalist approaches in English. She explains the complexities of the theories and their terms, using simple language with numerous examples. The book includes an overview of how the theories developed, illustrations of the main ideas, and specific applications to translator training, literary translation, interpreting and ethics. The survey concludes with a concise review of the criticisms that have been made of the theories, together with perspectives for the future development of functionalist approaches.
