Book excerpt: "The main themes of the book are: (1) Criticism of the long-term (since the nineteenth century) assumption that Asian countries will become more like America as they reap the benefits of capitalism. This approach, the author argues, is not only arrogant and led to disaster in Vietnam, it is also souring U.S. relations with Japan. (2) Exploration of why Japan will not become a "little America." (3) The positing and analysis of potential solutions in the hope that another disaster will be avoided."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Immigrant Japan by : Gracia Liu-Farrer
Download or read book Immigrant Japan written by Gracia Liu-Farrer and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigrant Japan? Sounds like a contradiction, but as Gracia Liu-Farrer shows, millions of immigrants make their lives in Japan, dealing with the tensions between belonging and not belonging in this ethno-nationalist country. Why do people want to come to Japan? Where do immigrants with various resources and demographic profiles fit in the economic landscape? How do immigrants narrate belonging in an environment where they are "other" at a time when mobility is increasingly easy and belonging increasingly complex? Gracia Liu-Farrer illuminates the lives of these immigrants by bringing in sociological, geographical, and psychological theories—guiding the reader through life trajectories of migrants of diverse backgrounds while also going so far as to suggest that Japan is already an immigrant country.
Book Synopsis The Japanese in Latin America by : Daniel M. Masterson
Download or read book The Japanese in Latin America written by Daniel M. Masterson and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese migration to Latin America began in the late nineteenth century, and today the continent is home to 1.5 million persons of Japanese descent. Combining detailed scholarship with rich personal histories, The Japanese in Latin America is the first comprehensive study of the patterns of Japanese migration on the continent as a whole. When the United States and Canada tightened their immigration restrictions in 1907, Japanese contract laborers began to arrive in mines and plantations in Latin America. Daniel M. Masterson, with the assistance of Sayaka Funada-Classen, examines Japanese agricultural colonies in Latin America, as well as the subsequent cultural networks that sprang up within and among them, and the changes that occurred as the Japanese moved from wage labor to ownership of farms and small businesses. Masterson also explores recent economic crises in Brazil, Argentina, and Peru, which combined with a strong Japanese economy to cause at least a quarter million Latin American Japanese to migrate back to Japan. Illuminating authoritative research with extensive interviews with migrants and their families, The Japanese in Latin America examines the dilemma of immigrants who maintained strong allegiances to their Japanese roots, even while they struggled to build lives in their new countries.

Download or read book Japan's Demographic Revival written by Stephen Robert Nagy and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan's Demographic Revival shifts discussions about employing immigration as the 'best' or 'sole' solution to assuaging Japan's demographic quagmire to a more systematic approach that identifies structural, organizational and cultural impediments that contribute to Japan's (and other countries') declining demographic situations. This edited volume also sheds light on the plethora of changes required to produce a demographically sustainable Japan.Part One includes chapters explaining the endogenous, ethnocultural and structural obstacles that link ethnocultural understandings of citizenship and nationality. Part Two consists of chapters that provide insight into the societal barriers that exist in Japan to address demographic issues. Part Three shifts its focus away from identifying and analyzing the structural, organizational and cultural factors towards chapters that are policy oriented, linking existing policies as contributing factors behind Japan's demographic challenge.

Book Synopsis Perspectives on the State Borders in Globalized Africa by : Yuichi Sasaoka
Download or read book Perspectives on the State Borders in Globalized Africa written by Yuichi Sasaoka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-25 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessing the different kinds of borders between African nations, the contributors present a borderland and trans-region approach to understanding the challenges and opportunities facing the peoples of the African continent. Africa faces rampant violence, terrorism, deterioration of water-energy-food provision, influxes of refugees and immigrants, and religious hatred under the trends of globalization. Solutions for these issues require new perspectives that are not attempted by conventional state-building approaches. Statehood is limited in many places on the African continent because many states are combined by loose political ties. African states’ borders tend to be regarded as porous and fragile. However, as the contributors to this volume argue, those porous borders can contribute to cultural and socio-economic network construction beyond states and the creation of active borderlands by increasing people’s mobility, contact, and trade. A must read for scholars of African studies that will also be of great value to academics and students with a broader interest in nationhood, globalization, and borders.
Download or read book Koreans in Japan written by Sonia Ryang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Koreans in Japan are a barely known minority, not only in the West but also within Japan itself. This pioneering study analyzes these relations in the context of the particular conditions and constraints that Koreans face in Japanese society. The contributors cover a wide range of topics, including: * the legal and social status of Koreans in Japan * the history of Korean colonial displacement and postcolonial division during the Cold War * ethnic education * women's self-expression. These studies serve to reveal the highly resilient and diverse reality of this minority group, whilst simultaneously highlighting the fact that - despite recent improvement - legal, social and economic constraints continue to exist in their lives.
