Book excerpt: Lesson Plan from the year 2018 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Grammar, Style, Working Technique, grade: 1,2, University of Potsdam (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Games and Activities in the Primary EFL Classroom, language: English, abstract: Early foreign language learning often challenges both pupils and teachers. Reasons for this are, for example, that many teachers are non-specialists or follow strictly the content of the curriculum or the teaching materials and, therefore, do not make the teaching varied. As a result, pupils are less motivated and do not get involved in learning. However, by formulating clear learning goals and using appropriate learning methods correctly and in a variety of ways, lessons can be designed to make both pupils and teachers feel comfortable and work together to achieve goals. This essay wants to show that the chosen method of movement can help in the process of vocabulary learning. To illustrate this, a lesson plan was created focusing on movement and vocabulary learning. The essay is structured as follows: First, it explains exactly what movement means in language teaching and learning and how it can be used effectively. Therefore, potential and limits will be considered. Afterwards, the goal of vocabulary learning will be explained. For both emphases, a connection will be established that is substantiated by the contents of the framework curriculum. In the following discussion, the content and structure of the lesson plan are explained and reasoned. During this presentation, another focus is on the use of different principles of early language learning and the use of differentiation in language teaching. Finally, in the conclusion, the most important arguments of the essay for the named learning goal and the method will be summarized.

This user-friendly book integrates up-to-date research on best practices into each chapter and includes vignettes, classroom activities, sample lessons, a list of children's literature, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth look on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and Early Childhood Education (ECE), two domains where major joint research is needed. By taking stock on theoretical underpinnings, it explores the ideal conditions for early additional language acquisition in preschool contexts through CLIL with a learner-centered approach grounded in developmentally appropriate practices (DEP) and an emphasis on the importance of play, cognition, holistic content adaptation and social-emotional learning. The book also offers a comprehensive view of how this methodological approach has already set a clear path on Pre-primary education internationally. Finally, it offers insights into CLIL pedagogies as related and adapted to Pre-primary education, resources and materials for very young learners and practical implementation from the classroom. By providing a solid empirical background on Pre-primary CLIL, along with appropriate methodological issues and practices, this book serves as a key resource to students, practitioners, academics as well as teacher educators and policy-makers in international contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this publication national and international researchers working in the field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, applied linguistics and educational sciences are presenting their current research in the area of primary EFL teacher education. The starting point of this collection was the general shift in educational research towards the role of teachers as well as towards facets of the teaching profession and their relative contributions to successful and 'good' education. All contributions to this volume focus primarily on hitherto insufficiently researched as¬pects of the professional development of primary EFL teachers. This book is thus contributing to closing existing research gaps as well as giving impetus for future studies and increasing communication about research on the professional development of EFL teachers in related disciplines. Aside from an overview of teaching primary EFL in Europe and beyond, the contributors are presenting up-to-date research on policy and practice of primary EFL teacher education, in-service training as well as professional competences and beliefs of primary EFL teachers. Edited by Eva Wilden and Raphaela Porsch, this interdisciplinary book provides contributions from Nora Benitt, Henriette Dausend, Ann-Cathrin Deters-Philipp, Janet Enever, Alicia Jöckel, Johannes König, Angelika Kubanek, Sandra Lammerding, Rama Mathew, Günter Nold, Annamaria Pinter, Thorsten Piske, Shelagh Rixon, Andreas Rohde, Henning Rossa, Bianca Roters, Sarah Strauß and Sarantis Tachtsoglou.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While educators and educational psychologists debate the influence of media on learning, there can be little doubt that media is now an integral constituent of any educational context. In particular, computer and internet media, with their immense processing power and multimedia capabilities, can have significant bearing on learning processes and outcomes in today's learning environment. Such media, which are increasingly designed to be highly interactive and adaptable, can enable reflective, productive and communicative activities and have much potential for foreign language learning. The book contains 16 papers which look at different forms of media and explore how these affect or can be used effectively in foreign language education. The first of three parts focuses on important theoretical and pedagogical issues in selecting and using media. In the second part, insightful empirical research findings are presented on the contributions of different forms of media in language teaching and learning, including their effect on learners' learning motivation. The third and concluding part of the book provides in-depth accounts of how media can be harnessed to drive innovative curricular practice as well as students' evaluations of these curricular projects.
