Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This is a multiple case study analysis of a select group of middle school students learning the Chinese language and Chinese culture through the inquiring, performing, reflecting, and producing (IPRP) model, a performed culture pedagogical approach. With the purpose of deepening the understanding and perspectives of students' Chinese language and cultural learning processes, this researcher examined nine participants' Chinese language and cultural learning experience in a classroom setting for 18 weeks. Within the perspectives of Vygotsky's (1978a, 1978b) sociocultural theory, the researcher used the constant comparison method and the categorical aggregation method to collect and analyze three data sources: field notes of class observations, semistructured participants' interviews, and video-recorded performance sessions. The findings of this study revealed that IPRP, as a new and practical performed culture pedagogical approach, links Vygotsky's (1978a, 1978b) sociocultural theory with the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, 2015). The current study's findings suggest the IPRP model could be used to provide a solution to improve the integration of Chinese language and culture learning at the practical level.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Viewing the goal of language teaching as preparing learners to communicate successfully in the languages and cultures being studied, this thesis adopts the Performed Culture Approach, which expands the meaning of "culture" and integrates the acquisition of behavioral culture with the learning of the target language. This study addresses in-school behavioral culture as one of the primary and fundamental microcultures in language teaching. The assumption is that since schooling is considered a process of socialization and enculturation, the behavior patterns and social norms in teacher-student and student-student interactions have implications for language teaching and learning. With this assumption, this study conducted a questionnaire survey among college students and teachers in American and Chinese cultures. The purpose of the survey is to explore how students of the two cultures behave in the perceived course of transactions with their teachers and classmates, and what the expectation of the teachers in the two cultures are with respect to how students in the teachers' culture are expected to behave in these transactions. Five transactions were examined in the survey: greeting one's teacher, expressing different opinions from one's teacher, dealing with a problem in a study group, responding to compliments from other classmates, and returning a favor to a classmate. Comparisons between the results of the American student respondents and those of the Chinese student respondents indicate differences in terms of the perception the student respondents of the two cultures have as to how they would do things in these transactions. The results of the teacher survey reveal that the ways that the students from the two cultures would be most likely to behave were recognized and accepted by members of their own culture. In addition, the results of the survey virtually confirm the researcher's preliminary observations. This indicates that the perceived course of these transactions and the actual transactions between the teacher and the students are largely parallel. The findings of this study indicate it would be beneficial to introduce the behavior patterns of Chinese students (which can be widely applied to other interactions in various contexts in Chinese culture) into the Chinese language classroom. Furthermore, for American learners of Chinese language, to behave in ways that are acceptable in American culture cannot ensure that students will behave in culturally appropriate ways in a similar situation in the target culture. This further indicates the necessity for American language learners to learn how to do things in school that would be appropriate in Chinese culture. The significance of in-school Chinese behavioral culture entails incorporating the school saga as a primary saga into Chinese language teaching and learning in K-12 and university language classrooms. Using the performance-based approach, this thesis discusses the design of the pedagogical materials which embody the support that teachers can provide for compiling the school saga. The results of the survey also contribute to the development of pedagogical materials for the language classroom.

It develops the assumption that the goal of learning another language is to learn to communicate in that culture, and that communication entails not simply speaking and listening but being able to establish one's intentions and accurately interpret the intentions of others. Current conceptions of culture in common use at the high school level are examined and found to be lacking in terms of their ability to enable learners to communicate in Chinese culture. The adoption at the high school level of a pedagogy based on the theory of performed culture is proposed. In developing and implementing a curriculum based on the theory of performed culture at the high school level, a number of constraints, such as the high school teaching environment and high school pedagogical materials, must be taken into account. The high school teaching environment imposes the constraint of limited time in contact with the studied language, which means that learning must proceed at a slower pace. The general high school teaching framework puts emphasis on student creativity and fun; when implementing a curriculum, one must be aware of but not overly influenced by these expectations. High school pedagogical materials also present a number of challenges for use with a performed culture approach; three of the most popular beginning textbooks are evaluated and suggestions for adaptation are provided. A high school Chinese curriculum, based on the theory of performed culture, is presented. It is organized according to the principles of the four skills of language learning, the three modes of communication, and item- and strategy-based learning. To complement the curriculum, a pedagogical cycle for interpersonal communication and curricular management techniques are also proposed.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study is to propose a model curriculum for the PK-4 Chinese program based on the pedagogy of performed culture with the goals that learners are able to communicate and participate successfully in the Chinese culture. This qualitative study is designed to examine how native Chinese speakers at this age communicate in certain social and cultural environments. Three types of interactions are examined through interviewing the mothers of three to eight year old children: parent-to-child, child-to-child and child-to-other adult. In order to provide authentic scripts for curriculum design, the interactions between parents and children are recorded, and the scripts derived from interactions of 3-8 year old Chinese speakers in specific social and cultural environments are presented, organized, and analyzed in terms of cases, sagas, and themes. The commonly used linguistic forms for certain functions are analyzed within the context. The results indicate that children do many routine activities everyday, and the three types of interactions within family environment include many cases that happen frequently in children's lives, and many of these cases present crucial themes such as being competitive and making an effort, which are important for L2 learners of the same age. In order to establish and maintain good relationships in Chinese culture, young L2 learners need to pay attention to cases such as inviting, making suggestions, making comparisons, and expressing intentions, using appropriate terms of address. The study will contribute to our understanding of children's language usage, and thus lead to a model of Chinese language curriculum for PK-4 grades that follows the performed culture approach. As the number of students learning Chinese at a young age dramatically increases, more and more Chinese language instructional materials targeting learners belonging to this age group have appeared on the market. Several popular Chinese textbooks will be evaluated, and suggestions for adapting these materials to performance-based instruction will be provided. As part of the PK-4 curriculum design, the content of instruction is proposed by defining the first three phases of a curriculum; and the implementation of instruction will be elaborated by addressing various issues in creating a PK-4 foreign language instructional environment.
