Book excerpt: Designed to tap the rich collection of instructional techniques in the ERIC database, this compilation of lesson plans offers practical suggestions for incorporating computers into the English/language arts classroom at both the elementary and secondary level. Because many teachers and administrators are using computers for the first time, the first section of the TRIED offers guidelines on the sequential organization of word-processing skills, software selection, class organization, desktop publishing, and a variety of other considerations for the effective integration of computers into the instructional program. The second section of the TRIED provides lessons using the computer in elementary language arts classes. The final section of the TRIED offers lessons for English teachers to use with their computer resources. A 47-item annotated bibliography of related resources in the ERIC database is attached. (RS)

Though this statement may seem to be no more than an overused generalization, it encapsulates the undoubted importance of processes and process-oriented approaches in language teaching and learning. In foreign language education in recent decades, researchers and practitioners alike are increasingly focusing their attention on: 1) the learner as the active subject of learning and the internal processes that constitute his/her learning leading to the development of communicative competence; 2) teaching approaches, curricula and materials that reflect this view of language learning; and 3) other factors such as the sociocultural context, social interactions and discourse, and individual learner characteristics and differences. The theme of this book reflects this paradigm shift, and the papers included here from the disciplines of foreign language education and second language acquisition provide vital insights into processes in curriculum planning, teaching methodology, teacher education and professional development, language acquisition, language discourse, classroom instruction and interactions, the development of language skills and learning strategies, and language learning motivation.

Book excerpt: Comprises an overview of the research done on the use of word processing in the elementary grades. Most of the studies showed that students wrote more and wrote better with word processors than they did with traditional tools. They improved their spelling, punctuation, organization, word choice, and ideas. Computer use also had a positive effect on the writing of children with special needs (e.g., English as a second language) and with learning disabilities. While further study is needed to confirm this, it appears that there is a transfer of the skills acquired through word processing to writing with traditional tools. Primary-age students seem to adapt more readily to the computer than do older elementary school students. Research also seems to indicate a relationship between reading and writing skills.

Book excerpt: In Indonesia, where English is regarded as foreign language, the teaching of this subject at most schools are still focused on the mastery of grammar and vocabulary. Moreover, the teaching and learning process is still using teacher-centered approach. Although, there are four skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - should be covered in the teaching of this subject but the fact some teachers are still reluctant teaching speaking into practice. Therefore there is no improvement for both students who learn and teachers who teach and its application in the real world situation. What students learn only what is printed on the books and practice it in front of the class. The main problem usually comes from both teachers and students that they are non-active speaking speakers. But this can be solved by using Communicative Language Teaching. Since the use of technology such as video, television, audiotapes, the internet, computer soft, etc., can come to aid of such teachers and yang students. Using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) will Help students to use the target language in an authentic and meaningful way
