Download or read book Leading from Under the Sword of Damocles written by Nabil Abu el Ata and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization trends and the rapid pace of technological innovations have introduced unprecedented change and uncertainty. For unprepared businesses, the drivers of the Fourth Industrial Revolution will become a constant source of surprise and crises will unfold at an ever-increasing rate. To thrive under these conditions, companies must adopt new risk management technologies and practices that enable business leaders to better anticipate and adjust to changing dynamics. This book helps readers understand how algorithm-based predictive and prescriptive analytics principles can be used to control risk in today’s dynamic business environment. It serves as a reference guide for business leaders and risk management practitioners of companies that are global in reach or operate dynamically complex systems. Using the technological and scientific innovations presented in this book, business leaders can gain a wider understanding of risk and prescriptively determine which actions are necessary to ensure the business is optimally positioned to meet its stated long-term goals and objectives. Case studies show how the presented methods can be practically applied to preemptively expose risks and support decisions to optimize, transform or disrupt current business models, strategies, organizational structure and information systems when necessary to maintain a market position or outperform competitors. These methods have been proven through hundreds of client cases. By using mathematical emulation to link business risks to strategic imperatives, it becomes possible to achieve a higher annual profit margin and better growth. As we enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution, companies that are able to expose risks caused by dynamic complexity and maintain the alignment between the goals of the business and operational execution will be better prepared to make the shifts necessary for long-term success and keep the business moving toward its goals.

Book Synopsis Conserving Canvas by : Cynthia Schwarz
Download or read book Conserving Canvas written by Cynthia Schwarz and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most authoritative publication in nearly fifty years on the subject of conserving paintings on canvas. In 2019, Yale University, with the support of the Getty Foundation, held an international conference, where nearly four hundred attendees from more than twenty countries gathered to discuss a vital topic: how best to conserve paintings on canvas. It was the first major symposium on the subject since 1974, when wax-resin and glue-paste lining reigned as the predominant conservation techniques. Over the past fifty years, such methods, which were often destructive to artworks, have become less widely used in favor of more minimalist approaches to intervention. More recent decades have witnessed the reevaluation of traditional practices as well as focused research supporting significant new methodologies, procedures, and synthetic materials for the care and conservation of paintings on fabric supports. Conserving Canvas compiles the proceedings of the conference, presenting a wide array of papers and posters that provide important global perspectives on the history, current state, and future needs of the field. Featuring an expansive glossary of terms that will be an invaluable resource for conservators, this publication promises to become a standard reference for the international conservation community. The free online edition of this open-access publication is available at getty.edu/publications/conserving-canvas. Also available are free PDF and EPUB downloads of the book.
Book Synopsis Leadership and Temporality by : Armin Klesing
Download or read book Leadership and Temporality written by Armin Klesing and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2015-12-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to introduce a new theory of leadership. Traditionally, leadership is understood as the ability of charismatic personalities to create a following and to achieve significant results against great odds. This study takes a different point of departure. Author Armin Klesing asks two questions: How can the response behavior to events be calibrated through the right persons, and what does it take to actively create a new budget? This leads to the elegant concept of “temporality of leadership,” which describes the proper calibration of societies, cultures, states, businesses, armies, and whatever else lends itself to be described as a time-dependent chain process in fields of dynamic perturbations. The author blends philosophy, self-development, history, current affairs, and business building to describe the potential implications of this novel approach.
Book Synopsis A Pandemic of Populists by : Wojciech Sadurski
Download or read book A Pandemic of Populists written by Wojciech Sadurski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, the world has watched in shock as populists swept to power in free elections. From Manila to Warsaw, Brasilia to Budapest, the populist tide has shattered illusions of an inexorable march to liberal democracy. Eschewing simplistic notions of a unified global populism, this book unpacks the diversity and plurality of populisms. It highlights the variety of constitutional and extraconstitutional strategies that populists have used to undermine the institutional fabric of liberal democracy and investigates how ruling populists responded to the Covid-19 crisis. Outlining the rise of populisms and their governing styles, Wojciech Sadurski focuses on what populists in power do, rather than what they say. Confronting one of the most pressing concerns of international politics, this book offers a vibrant, contemporary account of modern populisms and, significantly, considers what we can do to fight back.
Book Synopsis Where the Evidence Leads by : Robert C. Johansen
Download or read book Where the Evidence Leads written by Robert C. Johansen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By shifting American security policy away from maximizing military power for the United States and toward maximizing human security for all, policymakers and citizens can also maximize national security for the United States and sustainable peace for the world. Why do war and political violence persist? Political realists argue that violent conflict and the struggle for power are inherent in the international system, and there is little we can do but manage it. However, as Robert Johansen argues in this path-breaking work, there are other ways forward. In Where the Evidence Leads, Johansen develops an "empirical realist" theory to enable the United Sates to respond more effectively to rising security threats. Together, peace research and security studies show that more security benefits are likely to result from maximizing the "causes" or correlates of peace than from maximizing military power. Ironically, a global grand strategy for human security, with national security folded into it, is likely to produce more security for the United States than a national security strategy. Peace reigns when states implement peace correlates, which range from addressing all nations' security fears to making life more predictable through better global governance. This approach, respectful of forgotten insights from Hans Morgenthau and others, revolutionizes thinking about national security policy by bringing it into a human security framework. The analysis shows that the anarchic, militarized balance-of-power system can be gradually changed with help from enhanced lawmaking, enforcement, and governance capacities. This thought-provoking book builds bridges between past policies-many of which have failed-and more deft ways of handling new realities that focus on building peace. In a world of threats, this book opens doors onto a future of sustainable peace, security, and hope.

Book Synopsis Damocles On The Couch by : Herbert L. Stricklin
Download or read book Damocles On The Couch written by Herbert L. Stricklin and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damocles On The Couch, is about getting your life straight, and it is about stories. Throughout history humans have used stories as vehicles to communicate and pass along information. Herb Stricklin, therapist and educator, has found that stories are a tremendous tool for relaying information regarding sound principles to live one’s life by. Stories afford the listener an opportunity to take the information that they are hearing and apply it to their lives on a much deeper level than just hearing cold hard facts. Jesus used parables to relay some of his most powerful messages. Ancient Greeks and Romans used plays to both entertain and educate those witnessing the performance. Morality plays, such as The Sword Of Damocles, help us to learn life lessons and understand the human condition. In this story, Damocles finds himself placed in a chair with a sword dangling over his head suspended by a single hair. The angst and fear that he experiences is a universal experience for humans (not necessarily a sword, but we have all had things “hanging over our heads”). Stricklin uses stories such as this to paint a picture for people regarding healthy and unhealthy ways of confronting life’s many challenges.

Book Synopsis Cosmopolitan Perspectives on Academic Leadership in Higher Education by : Feng Su
Download or read book Cosmopolitan Perspectives on Academic Leadership in Higher Education written by Feng Su and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores what academic leadership in higher education might mean in the cosmopolitan and increasingly globalised 21st century through individual academics' narrative accounts drawn from a range of international contexts. The book shows that academic leadership is key to an individual's development and that it could mean different things in different settings as academics operate across the levels of professional practice, institutional organisation, sector-wide systems and international networks. This book argues for the importance of cosmopolitan perspectives on academic leadership which are developed from the particularities of local and everyday situated experience. Part I of the book explores key theoretical perspectives; Part II provides first-hand accounts from the contributors of their own development as academic leaders; and Part III discusses some of the implications for those with responsibility for academic development and for all those concerned with developing the qualities necessary for leadership practices.
