Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Canada's Army written by J.L. Granatstein and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by J.L. Granatstein, one of the country's leading political and military historians, Canada's Army traces the full three-hundred-year history of the Canadian military. This thoroughly revised third edition brings Granatstein’s work up to date with fresh material and new scholarship on the evolving role of the military in Canadian society. It includes new coverage of the War in Afghanistan; NATO deployments to Poland, Latvia, and Iraq; aid to the civil power deployments; and the role of the army reserve. Masterfully written and passionately argued, Canada's Army offers a rich analysis of the political context for the battles and events that shape our understanding of the Canadian military.

Book Synopsis Canada Among Nations, 1994 by : Maureen Appel Molot
Download or read book Canada Among Nations, 1994 written by Maureen Appel Molot and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1994-06-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Part of the Peace addresses three areas in international affairs which are of particular concern to Canadian foreign policy makers: multilateralism, regionalism and peacekeeping. The authors consider Canada's involvement within various multilateral institutions, in particular the United Nations and the GATT. The five essays in 'Disengagement From Regionalism' trace developments within Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific, as enthusiasm for regional integration ebbs and flows. The 1994 edition of Canada Among Nations concludes with the issue of peace. As the cold-war era recedes into memory, the new world order turns out to be a time of great uncertainty. Civil strife in Bosnia, Somalia, the former Soviet Union and Cambodia challenge our traditional notions of peacekeeping. As the United Nations' mandate to intervene evolves to meet these challenges, so Canadians are reconsidering their role within that mandate.
Book Synopsis Les guerriers intrépides by : Bernd Horn
Download or read book Les guerriers intrépides written by Bernd Horn and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2007-11-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Canadian Experience of the Great War by : Brian Douglas Tennyson
Download or read book The Canadian Experience of the Great War written by Brian Douglas Tennyson and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the United States did not enter the First World War until April 1917, Canada enlisted the moment Great Britain engaged in the conflict in August 1914. The Canadian contribution was great, as more than 600,000 men and women served in the war effort—400,000 of them overseas—out of a population of 8 million. More than 150,000 were wounded and nearly 67,000 gave their lives. The war was a pivotal turning point in the history of the modern world, and its mindless slaughter shattered a generation and destroyed seemingly secure values. The literature that the First World War generated, and continues to generate so many years later, is enormous and addresses a multitude of cultural and social matters in the history of Canada and the war itself. Although many scholars have brilliantly analyzed the literature of the war, little has been done to catalog the writings of ordinary participants: men and women who served in the war and wrote about it but are not included among well-known poets, novelists, and memoirists. Indeed, we don’t even know how many titles these people published, nor do we know how many more titles were added later by relatives who considered the recollections or collected letters worthy of publication. Brian Douglas Tennyson’s The Canadian Experience of the Great War: A Guide to Memoirs is the first attempt to identify all of the published accounts of First World War experiences by Canadian veterans.

Book Synopsis Death Or Deliverance by : Teresa Iacobelli
Download or read book Death Or Deliverance written by Teresa Iacobelli and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soldiers found guilty of desertion or cowardice during the Great War faced death by firing squad. Novels, histories, movies, and television series often depict courts martial as brutal and inflexible, and social memories of this system of frontline justice have inspired modern movements to seek pardons for soldiers executed on the battlefield. In this powerful and moving book, Teresa Iacobelli looks beyond stories of callous generals and quick executions to consider the trials of nearly two hundred soldiers who were sentenced to death but spared by a disciplinary system capable of thoughtful review and compassion. By bringing to light these men's experiences, Death or Deliverance reconsiders an important chapter in the history of both a war and a nation.

Book Synopsis Canadian Churches and the First World War by : Gordon L. Heath
Download or read book Canadian Churches and the First World War written by Gordon L. Heath and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most accounts of Canada and the First World War either ignore or merely mention in passing the churches' experience. Such neglect does not do justice to the remarkable influence of the wartime churches nor to the religious identity of the young Dominion. The churches' support for the war was often wholehearted, but just as often nuanced and critical, shaped by either the classic just war paradigm or pacifism's outright rejection of violence. The war heightened issues of Canadianization, attitudes to violence, and ministry to the bereaved and the disillusioned. It also exacerbated ethnic tensions within and between denominations, and challenged notions of national and imperial identity. The authors of this volume provide a detailed summary of various Christian traditions and the war, both synthesizing and furthering previous research. In addition to examining the experience of Roman Catholics (English and French speaking), Anglicans, Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, Lutherans, Mennonites, and Quakers, there are chapters on precedents formed during the South African War, the work of military chaplains, and the roles of church women on the home front.
