Download or read book Traditional Leadership and Democratisation in Southern Africa written by Sandra Düsing and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2002 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the impacts of ethnically based, traditional political institutions on democratic state and nation building in Southern Africa and how do heterogeneous sources of legitimacy affect the prospects of long-term democratic regime consolidation? What are the impacts of "traditionalism" employed for purposes of party-political mobilization? An indicator for the political influence of traditional leadership in Southern Africa is the fact that a considerable number of democratically elected politicians in high office originate from aristocratic families, representing hereditary traditional leadership structures for centuries. This is evident for the charismatic founding president of the new South Africa; Nelson Mandela, as well as for his adversary, the prime minister-in-office, Mangosuthu Buthelezi. The careful reconsideration of this "state behind the state" has been identified as crucial, in this study, to make any realistic assessments of the prospects for sustainable democratization in Southern African countries in the near future.

The Nation-building classic: TOWARDS A BETTER COUNTRY: A QUEST FOR VISIONARY LEADERSHIP IN AFRICA, IS AN ACTION-PROPELLING TOOL ON CITIZENSHIP DEMOCRATIC ADVANCEMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT and the series 3 of WaaGovernment and Theory of Nations-a classic book on Nation building, patriotism, and social change. A Leadership, Self-development, and a RELATIONSHIP inspired work that uses satire and metaphor in its setting, designed to be acted as a play on stage. At the "Love for Country campaign," Amabu met with WaaGovernment, and after he engaged her in a dialogue, they became friends and started partnering together in different ventures on a journey that provided practical and workable answers and solutions to Nation building questions. Amabu has given his heart to this classic work and believes that it would be propitious for African schools, Governments, and institutions in our quest to revamp the African society on this re-culturing campaign for visionary leadership and good governance to kill the anti-Progress trio of corruption, ethnocentric and nepotistic tendencies prevailing in our country and responsible for the backwardness of Nigeria and Africa.

Book excerpt: Focusing on both pre-colonial and post-colonial eras, this book aims to cultivate a greater understanding of globalisation processes in the context of leadership behaviour in Africa. Analysing empirical evidence and theoretical frameworks, the author evaluates the role of leaders in the failure of African globalisation and seeks to propose an initiative for change. As emphasis shifts from world control to regional and sub-regional control, the new face of globalisation offers an opportunity for Africa to grow and develop with a new leadership perspective. Presenting servant leadership as a solution to Africa’s global failures, this timely book explores the challenges of governance, resource management and regionalisation, and will be of value to anyone interested in the development of Africa as a continent.
Book Synopsis The Military and Nation Building by : Pax D. T. Nkomo
Download or read book The Military and Nation Building written by Pax D. T. Nkomo and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After forty years of independence. African countries are still battling with the problem of nation building. This thesis examines the possibility of the military playing a direct role in ethnic integration. The variables, which may determine the military's ability to affect national integration, are the political elite, the state and society. It is found that at lower levels of development, these variables do not support the military in the direction of national integration but they do so at higher levels of development. The issue that arises from this finding is whether African countries should wait for development to occur in the hope that it will bring national integration with it. On the other hand, lack of integration causes mistrust. tensions and conflicts, which weaken the thrust to development. African countries should therefore find methods of political organization that reduce such tensions and conflicts in order to facilitate development and consequently national integration. It is this need for stability that the culturally adaptive mode of political organization is recommended for African countries.

Book Synopsis Leadership, Nation-building and War in South Sudan by : Sonja Theron
Download or read book Leadership, Nation-building and War in South Sudan written by Sonja Theron and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over fifty years, the people of South Sudan fought for the right to be citizens of an independent nation-state. When this goal was finally achieved, however, it quickly became evident that the South Sudanese nation was not nearly as cohesive as hoped. The result has been a catastrophic civil war. Spanning South Sudan's nation-building struggle from its inception up until the current civil war, this book challenges the notion that the continued violence of this process can be reduced to either identity difference or the fault of individual leaders. Rather, it uses the leadership process to understand the complex progressions and relationships that have characterised South Sudan's nation-building trajectory. The book argues that the core driving force behind the current conflict in South Sudan can be found not in ethnicity, the “resource curse” or power struggle, but in a set of destructive relationships that have fueled violence and oppression in the country for the better part of a century. This cyclical leadership process has entrapped the country in an increasingly destructive and contradictory nation-building process that continues to spiral and disintegrate.
