Prior to 1942 the major part of these investigations was concerned with argon and alcohol filled counters. Experience has indicated that these counters do not entirely meet reasonable stringent operational requirements. In order to obtain even a small percentage of satisfactory counters, highly skilled and experienced personnel was required. The expanding use of counters called for a straightforward filling technique which would produce reliable counters and could be handled by less experienced personnel.

Book excerpt: The discovery in 1922 of the exceptional effectiveness of tetraethyllead in suppressing knock in the combustion of gasoline in engines and its introduction as a gasoline additive in 1923 stimulated an enormous number of studies on procedures for its synthesis and industrial production, on its behavior and uses, and also on the toxicology of this compound and on its environmental impact resulting from large scale lead distribution. The results of these investigations are collected in more than 3000 papers and patents. The quantity of information on this prominent compound fills the second volume of the series on organo lead compounds. Complete literature coverage was strived for but not all of the voluminous patent data have been considered. Certain publications on production of tetraethyllead or on use as a gasoline additive that are not reported in Chemical Abstracts (C.A.) may not have been found; similarly, publications that could not be clearly identified as relevant to the subject might be missing. Publications concerning the fate of inorganic lead compounds that are products of the combustion of leaded gasoline as weil as the vast amount of related papers on analytical and toxicological studies and on health and environmental aspects have been deliberately omitted. The literature is covered through 1988; C.A. has been evaluated through volume 110 of 1989.

One of the few remaining limitations of the technique when applied to such compounds, namely the analysis of very highly boiling and or thermally unstable substances, has been overcome in many instances by the introduction of techniques such as silation for the conversion of sample components to lower boiling or more stable substances which can be gas chromatographed at reasonably low temperatures. All of this has been extensively dealt with in many books published during recent years dealing with the theory and practice of applying gas chromatography to the analysis and preparative separation of organic compounds. In parallel with these developments there has occurred, particu larly over the past decade, a growing interest in the application of gas chromatography to the analysis of organometallic compounds. Indeed, for many types of organometallic compounds, gas chromatography is the analytical method of choice particularly, as so often happens, when the sample is a mixture. Many developments in the subject have occurred since that time and a new book on the subject is now overdue. The present book aims to provide a comprehensive review of the subject. It covers not only all aspects of the analysis of organometallic compounds but also contains two additional chapters, dealing with environmental analysis and the use of chelates of metals in the determination of very low concentrations of organic metals. Whilst reviewing the literature for the present book, it was observed that whereas papers published prior to 1973 dealt almost exclusively with various forms of analysis, a high proportion of those published during the past ten years were concerned with the application of proven or newly developed methods to the determination of organometallic compounds in environmental samples such as water, air, soil, river and ocean sediments, fish life and biota samples. An increasing range of elements including mercury, lead, arsenic, tin, antimony, selenium and manganese are now being found in organically bound forms in the environment, some resulting from pollution, others formed in nature by bacterial processes. As many of these substances have appreciable implications to human and animal health and the ecosystem as a whole, it was considered that it would be timely to include a separate chapter in the book devoted entirely to this subject.
