Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead Poisoning in the Smelting and Refining of Lead The last 15 or 20 years have seen great changes in the lead smelting industry of the United States. As transportation has improved, small and poorly equipped smelters which had been built near the deposits of ore have been abandoned and the tendency has been to concentrate the work of smelting and refining in a few large plants, for it has proved cheaper to ship the ore to large centers where labor is abundant, than to do the smelting in the mining districts. This change has resulted in a twofold advantage to the worker. In the first place, as these large plants are usually equipped with the latest and best machinery the amount of handwork required has been materially diminished. In the second place, the conditions under which the employees work have been improved, for large, well-built factories are usually freer from dust and fumes than are those of the old type, and newer methods of manufacture involve economies, such as the saving of poisonous volatile products which used to be allowed to escape into the air. Along with the improvement in equipment, there has been in recent years evidence of a greater interest on the part of the managers in the health and safety of their workmen, and there is probably now no plant in the United States in which some effort is not made to lessen the dangers of lead poisoning as well as to prevent accidents. As a result of these changes in most places where lead smelting is an old industry, as in southeastern Missouri, Pueblo, Denver, Leadville, East Helena, Omaha, and South Chicago, the opinion is general among physicians and townspeople, as well as among the men in the industry, that lead poisoning is far less frequent and less severe than it used to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead Poisoning in Its Acute and Chronic Forms: The Goulstonian Lectures, Delivered in the Royal College of Physicians, March 1891 Lead Poisoning is so widely met with, that I need scarcely apologise for the appearance of this monograph. Almost in the form in which these Lectures were delivered in the Royal College of Physicians, they are now presented to the medical profession. I take this opportunity of acknowledging my indebtedness to my Colleagues - the Physicians of the Royal Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, for their generosity in allowing me to utilise their cases - also to the Surgeons to the Lead Works, for the cases they sent me, and to Mr Foster, Manager of the Ouseburn Lead Works, for the many opportunities he afforded me of being present at the medical examination of lead workers. To Dr Sims Woodhead I am also indebted for the revision of my microscopical preparations, and to Dr Baigent for many of the drawings which are reproduced in the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead Poisoning and Lead Absorption: The Symptoms, Pathology and Prevention, With Special Reference to Their, Industrial Origin and an Account of the Principal Processes Involving Risk The Editors hope to issue in this series of International Medical Monographs contributions to the domain of the Medical Sciences on subjects of immediate interest, made by first-hand authorities who have been engaged in extending the confines of knowledge. Readers who seek to follow the rapid progress made in some new phase of investigation will find therein accurate information acquired from the consultation of the leading authorities of Europe and America, and illuminated by the researches and considered opinions of the authors. Amidst the press and rush of modern research, and the multitude of papers published in many tongues, it is necessary to find men of proved merit and ripe experience, who will winnow the wheat from the chaff, and give us the present knowledge of their own subjects in a duly balanced, concise, and accurate form. This volume deals with a subject of wide interest, for lead is dealt with in so many important processes of manufacture - in the making of white lead; pottery glazing; glass polishing; handling of printing type; litho-making; house, coach, and motor painting; manufacture of paints and colour; file-making; tinning of metals; harness-making; manufacture of accumulators, etc. The authors bring forward convincing evidence, experimental and statistical, in favour of the causation of lead poisoning by the inhalation of dust.
